of organisms over time

Evolution occurs when genetic variation allows certain individuals to better survive in their environment. Over time, these changes (adaptations) will be passed from generation to generation.

AdaptationA genetically controlled change in an

organism that helps it to survive and reproduce under a changing environment

• A change in the environment will affect the niches of the organisms that live in that environment

• A species may successfully occupy a niche, but if that niche disappears, the species may become extinct.

EVOLVING IN A NICHE

• 5 species of warblers live in the forests of the northeastern United States

• All 5 species feed on the insects in spruce trees

• Although they may seem to compete with each other, each species feeds in a different part of the tree

• Their niches overlap slightly, but are different enough to allow all 5 species to coexist
