AIESEC GCDP Success Story
My AIESEC volunteer experience brought me to Kilele Junior School in
Nairobi, Kenya. The school was inspiring in many ways, and the beautiful
concept of making it possible for refugee children from South Sudan to
get education and integrate with the Kenyan society appealed to me a lot.
During my six weeks I gained practical skills in teaching and planning my lessons in
art and music, but most of all I enjoyed the experience of getting to know a
completely new and different culture. All the loving and caring Kenyans I met –
school teachers, my host family and AIESEC friends – made these six weeks an
amazing time for me. Through AIESEC I also met a lot of other volunteers from all
over the world (China, Egypt, Germany, Argentina, Ireland, Russia, Pakistan, Finland,
Spain…) who I travelled and became friends with. The culture shocks I encountered
both with Kenyans and other volunteers taught me a lot about myself and Swedish
culture. Examples of culture shocks are how you greet each other, religiosity, humor
and the standard of the daily life. Eating with my hands and living without a shower
was obviously something new for me, as well as not being allowed to be out when it’s
dark or never knowing when the bus actually leaves (there were no certain
departing times). Still, to go on a volunteer experience is one of the most developing
and rewarding things I have done so far, and I strongly recommend it!
