1st Sardar Prakash Singh Memorial Open Fide Rated Chess Tournament organized by Baba Kalinath Chriatable Trust was

held at Gulshan Dhaba, Sonipat from 17-22 April 2017.

This Rupees Five Lakhs prize money event attracted a total number of 327 players which includes two Grandmasters, eight Interna-tional Masters and 260 international rated players from different parts of India and two foreign federations. The event conducted under Swiss system with 10 rounds and the time control was 90 minutes and 30 second increment from move 1.

In a befitting opening ceremony, Shri. Bharat Singh CEO All India Chess Federation inaugu-rated the event in presence of Shri. Naresh Sharma, Secretary the Haryana Chess As-sociation. Grandmaster Swapnil Dhopade of Railways got the top billing. The entire tour-nament saw lots of ups and downs as well as grueling battles over chequered board.

The initial two rounds progressed on expect-ed lines but on third round, 12 year old Delhi Player Aaryan Varshney caused a flutter not only in the tournament but also in chess world by upsetting top seed and Grandmas-ter Swapnil Dhopade with black pieces. In the fifth round, the long awaited moment of Haryana Chess happened as International Master Himanshu Sharma crossed the rating barrier of 2500 to become the 47th Grand-master-elect and first from Haryana. Shock defeat of Dhopade in third round and achievement of Sharma in fifth round

changed the complexion of the entire tour-nament. At the end of penultimate round, Saravana Krishnan P of Tamilnadu emerged as sole leader after beating Fide Master Rakesh Kumar Jena of Odisha. In the final round, Saravana Krishnan signed the peace treaty with Hemant Sharma of Railways but seasoned campaigner International Master Anup Deshmukh of LIC had other ideas as he ensured a thrilling end to the tourna-ment by beating Grandmaster Saptarshi Roy Chowdhury to catch up with leader Saravana Krishnan. A two way tie for the pole position was resolved by buchholz tie break score and better tie break score helped Deshmukh to lift the Sardar Prakash Singh Memorial tro-phy and pocketed a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh. Saravaran Krishnan satisfied with Rs. 71000 while IM Dinesh Sharma finished at third position to secure Rs. 41000 as cash prize.

K Srikanth of Indian Air Force and Raj Pra-khar of Haryana become best players among Below 1900 and Below 1600 respectively to fetch cash awards of Rs. 25000 and Rs. 21000. Amit Kumar Bansal of Uttar Pradesh and Stuti Bhanot of Haryana secured prizes for Best Unrated and Best Girl respectively.

At a colourful closing ceremony, Smt. Kavita Jain, Cabinet Minister Government of Harya-na and Shri. Mahipal Dhanda, MLA gave away the cash prizes and trophies to the winners along with Shri. Naresh Sharma, Secretary, Haryana Chess Association. Final ranking Rk Name Pts 1 IM Deshmukh Anup 8½ 2 Saravana Krishnan P. 8½

Black has a space advantage and White has the problem of developing his Bc1. 10.Ng1?! [Apparently white fears an attack down the h-file with h7-h5-h4 combined with ....Bh3. By making two moves in the opening with the same knight and pulling it back to its original square white indicates that he wants to play f2-f4 in tune with the existing pawn forma-tion. However, it turns out that white has an entirely different, time consuming positional idea. Better was 10.a5 which gave black only a minimal advantage.] 10...g5 11.h3 Ng6 12.Bf3 0–0–0 Ignoring white's ponderous play, black goes for rapid development of his pieces. 13.Bg4 The idea is to exchange off his light-square bishop which is considered a 'bad bishop' as it is hemmed in by his own central pawns. His other bishop which runs on dark squares is considered 'good' as the pawns are 'fixed' on light squares. But over-all this can only be a general consideration, and the student must judge a bishop more by its activity and practical reach rather than by merely the colour of the squares. 13...Kb8 This ensures that the queens do not get exchanged along the h3-c8 diagonal. 14.Qf3 Nb4! 15.Na3? Masters of the past-76 Robert Byrne

Robert Eugene Byrne (April 20, 1928 – April 12, 2013) was an American chess Grandmaster and chess author. He won the U.S. Championship in 1972, and was a World Chess Championship Candidate in 1974. Byrne represented the United States nine times in Chess Olympiads from 1952 to 1976 and won seven medals. He was the chess columnist from 1972 to 2006 for the New York Times, which ran his final column (a recounting of his 1952 victory over David Bronstein) on November 12, 2006. Byrne worked as a university professor for many years, before becoming a chess professional in the early 1970s.

Robert Byrne's first Master event was Ventnor City 1945, where he scored a respectable 4/9 to place 8th; the winner was Weaver Adams. He tied 1st–2nd in the Premier Reserves section at the U.S. Open Chess Championship, Pittsburgh 1946. Byrne became an International Master based on his results at the 1952 Chess Olympiad at Helsinki (bronze medal on third board). In that same year he graduated from Yale University. He went on to become a professor of philosophy at Indiana University, and his academic career left him little time for chess. He did represent the U.S. in team matches against the Soviet Union at New York 1954.Byrne did not play in his first U.S. Chess Championship until age 30 in 1958–59, placing tied 9–10th with 4/11; the winner was Bobby Fischer. But Byrne improved dramatically the next year in the same event to place 2nd with 8/11, ahead of Reshevsky and Pal Benko, as Fischer won again. In 1960, Byrne increased his serious play, winning the U.S. Open Chess Championship at St. Louis, and taking a silver medal on third board at the Olympiad in Leipzig.

In 1964, Byrne's third-place finish at the Buenos Aires tournament (behind Paul Keres and World Champion Tigran Petrosian), with 11½/17, made him an International Grandmaster.Byrne lost his first-round Candidates' match to former world champion Boris Spassky by 1½–4½ at San Juan, Puerto Rico 1974.As a 1974 Candidate, Byrne was seeded direct-ly to the 1976 Biel Interzonal, where he performed very strongly, but missed a playoff berth by only half a point.

When he became the columnist for the Times in 1972, he became less active as a play-er. He did, nevertheless, win tournaments at Torremolinos (1976–77), Harare (1983), and Lagos (1993). He has also been a frequent contributor to Chess Life magazine, the publication of the United States Chess Federation. He has chaired USCF's committee on masters' affairs and been one of its vice presidents. Byrne was inducted into the U.S. Chess Hall of Fame in 1994.He made original contributions in several opening systems. He was the first to play 6.Be3 against the Najdorf Variation of the Sicilian Defense (1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 a6 6.Be3); this system has been named for him and has been very popular since the mid-1980s. He developed the Byrne Variation against the King's Indian Defense in the Saemisch Variation, with a quick queenside expansion by Black. He used the Dutch Defense with success when that opening was rarely seen at the top level.. He retired from writing his chess column at age 78.Byrne died in 2013 at his home in Ossining, New York from Parkinson’s disease.

Solution to puzzle of the month on page 11: WBf1 has been captured at home and wBa4 is a promotee. Retract -1. Rb3xBb1 and now Bl. O-O-O is forbidden. Indeed, Bl. cannot retract -1 ... b2-b1=B+ or -1 ... c2xb1=B+ or -1 ... Rf5xb5+ (too many captures) so that what has been played is -1 ...Rf5-b5+ -2. b5xa6+. There, the wBa4 promotion took place on a8, forbidding Bl. O-O-O.Forward mate is then 1. Kxg7 ~ 2. Rf8#.(Other attempts at breaking Bl. O-O-O fail: -1. Bf2xBe1?? and Bl. can still O-O-O; -1. Kh7xPg6?? leads to an illegal position.)
