CHAPTER X—CHAPTER TITLE

X.1—Scope—Defines content, limitations, and assumptions related to type of member, type of construction, and type of reinforcement. The beginning of scope statements should have parallel construction.

Example: Scope statement: “The provisions of this chapter

govern the…” Limit statement: “Structural plain concrete beams are

not permitted.” Exclusions should be used with caution because a list

of exclusions is rarely all inclusive. It is preferable to state what is included in the scope statement.

X.2—General—Addresses topics such as connectivity of the member to the structural system, permissible materials for that member, and assumptions about stability.

X.3—Design limits—Provides limits that are specific to the member. This includes limits on dimensions, deflection, steel strain, and concrete stress.

X.4—Required strength—Provides requirements for determining design forces, moments, and critical sections.

X.5—Design strength—Provides requirements for determining nominal strengths, design strengths, i.e., the nominal strength times f, and the interaction of strengths.

X.6—Reinforcement limits—Provides limits for area of reinforcement. This section sets upper and lower limits on As calculated in X.5.

X.7—Reinforcement detailing—Provides requirements for cover, spacing, development, splices, bundled bars, bar cutoffs, structural integrity, torsion, and transverse reinforcement.
