Dear Members of the Boxing Family,

Welcome to the latest edition of Boxing News. The second half of 2014 included some of the busiest months in the history of AIBA, with many great points of interest along the way.

July’s Commonwealth Games saw thousands of boxing fans attending a number of memorable nights in Glasgow, Scotland, while in August I was delighted to watch our future stars at the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China.

In October, deserving Champions were crowned in Incheon, Korea, at a remarkable Asian Games boxing competition; and the following month, the

AIBA Women’s World Championships was held in Jeju, Korea and was full of wonderful performances that truly epitomized the courage and skill of world class women boxers.

I would like to express my pride at the successful launch of the AIBA Pro Boxing (APB) which is well on the way to revolutionizing pro boxing events across the world.

November’s 2014 AIBA Congress also held in Jeju saw the formation and discussion of many future objectives and initiatives, which will undoubtedly improve AIBA even further during the years to come. On a personal level, I was delighted to be re-elected as AIBA President for the third consecutive term. After eight years, I am very pleased with the work that we have already accomplished, and over the coming four years, we will strive to make our best achievements even better.

2015 is a defining year for any boxer aiming to compete at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and the World Series of Boxing Season V offers its competitors the chance to achieve Olympic qualification. WSB also welcomes back Franchises from Great Britain and China, as well as three new teams from Morocco, Puerto Rico and Venezuela, meaning that a total of 16 countries are now taking part in the competition.

This year will culminate with October’s AIBA World Boxing Championships in Doha, Qatar.

I hope that you will enjoy this issue.

AIBA WOMEN’S WORLD BOXING CHAMPIONSHIPS TOOK PLACE IN JEJU

The eighth edition of the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships took place in Jeju, Korea, where 280 elite boxers from 67 nations were taking part. Sixteen bouts were held on the opening day of the competition, where Kazakhstan’s Dina Zholaman caused a huge surprise following her triumph over Argentina’s gold medal contender Leonela Sanchez.

Followed by exciting ten days of boxing action, the finals brought the best women boxers head to head for their title wins. The ten gold medal bouts of the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in Jeju were held in the front of the local boxing fans, as Ireland’s legendary Katie Taylor secured her fifth title in a row, US London 2012 Olympic Champion Claressa Shields won her first AIBA Women’s Championships gold, while Atheyna Bylon of Panama became one of the greatest sportswomen in the history of her country.

WORLD BOXING LEADERS CONVENE FOR 2014 AIBA CONGRESS

Boxing leaders from all around the world gathered in Jeju, Korea for 2014 AIBA Congress, where they discussed and voted on the key decisions for the future of boxing. All members passed a unanimous motion in support of the launch of the AIBA Pro Boxing Competition (APB).

The delegates have also re-elected Dr. Ching-Kuo Wu, as International Boxing Association (AIBA) President for a third consecutive term. Dr. Wu, an IOC Executive Board member, was elected unopposed and has outlined his key priorities for the future development of boxing around the world. These included ensuring that more women were appointed to leadership positions in boxing; establishing a ‘boxer centered’ organization by opening the doors for boxers to take up leadership positions; continuing to expand the World Series of Boxing (WSB) competition and the AIBA Pro-Boxing competition (APB), while at the same time increasing their commercial value; and nvesting the revenues from Elite competitions into developing future generations of boxers by targeting funds towards the grassroots of the sport around the world.

In addition to re-electing the AIBA President Ching-Kuo Wu, delegates from national federations at the International Boxing Association’s 2014 Congress also voted to appoint new Vice Presidents and Executive Committee members for the coming four years.

With the closing of 2014 AIBA Congress, all Delegates unanimously approved and unveiled the Jeju Declaration for the further enhancement of its key initiatives for the successful fulfilment of the mission set on October 22, 2007 in Chicago to govern the sport of boxing in all of its forms.

AIBA AMENDS APB, WSB, AOB COMPETITION RULES AND TECHNICAL RULES

The International Boxing Association (AIBA) has released the newly amended AIBA Technical Rules and 3 Competition Rules on AOB, APB and WSB following the amendment of AIBA Statutes, which were approved at the AIBA EC meetings held in 2014 and AIBA Congress held in Jeju.

In addition, AIBA Technical and Rules Commission and AIBA HQs Office made the structure amendment in order to assist our boxing family to better understand the rules. All amended rules are underlined in order to be able to easier identify the amendments.

It has been ensured that all amended Competitions rules for APB (AIBA ProBoxing), WSB (World Series Boxing) and AOB (AIBA Open Boxing) are in line with the other statutory documents including the AIBA Bylaws, AIBA Ethics Code, AIBA Disciplinary Code, AIBA Procedural Rules and AIBA Anti-Doping Rules.

AIBA PRESIDENT DR CHING-KUO WU APPOINTEDALL 2015 - 2018 AIBA COMMISSION MEMBERS

The AIBA President, Dr Ching-Kuo Wu, has completed his appointments of members for AIBA 11 Commissions, including all Chairpersons. A new AIBA Scientific Commission has also been established and will ensure that boxing continues that boxing continues to develop scientific and medical related new initiatives to further protect the safety of boxers and enhance the level of our competitions by embracing the spirit and values of the Olympic Movement.

“I am very proud and happy to have found highly competent and knowledgeable boxing members to take part in all Commissions’ work. I believe that these members will greatly contribute to the further enhancement of our sport and continuous success of our organization”.

The mandate of the Commission members is from January 2015 until next AIBA Congress. All Commissions have held their first meetings as well as a Joint Meeting from February 3 – 5 in Lausanne.

AIBA APPOINTS FORMER IMG AND COCA-COLA EXECUTIVEAS BOXING MARKETING ARM CEO

AIBA, the world governing body for the sport of boxing, has appointed Mr David Gough as Chief Executive Officer for its exclusive global marketing company, the Boxing Marketing Arm (BMA).

Mr David Gough has significant experience in world-class sponsorship sales, sports marketing and commercial partnership having previously worked for IMG, Coca-Cola amongst others and Disney Events.

AIBA President and BMA Board Chairman, Dr Ching-Kuo Wu, said: “I am delighted that David Gough is joining the BMA, and there is little doubt that his excellent international experience will provide us with significant support as we move into an exciting new era for boxing.

“AIBA is the global governing body for the sport of boxing and David’s knowledge of international sports sponsorship and marketing will certainly boost the commercial success of our boxing competitions and initiatives.”

Mr Gough, whose appointment was reviewed and approved by the BMA board, said: “This is an important time for AIBA and the sport of boxing and I am thrilled to be joining at a time of such revolutionary change.

“Having worked for some of the world’s biggest brands and events, I am convinced that APB and World Series of Boxing (WSB) can establish themselves as top sports competitions on the international stage.”

Mr Gough has significant sports experience, having worked with Coca-Cola at the FIFA World Cup and Olympic Games, five Super Bowls, four NCAA Final Fours, three MLB and NBA All-Star Weekends and Disney events.

BMA is the marketing company established by AIBA to manage all commercial properties of AIBA’s three main programs, AIBA Open Boxing (AOB), AIBA Pro Boxing (APB) and World Series of Boxing (WSB) focused on TV/Media and Sponsorship Rights Sales.

NEW AND RE-ELECTED AIBA NATIONAL MEMBER FEDERATIONS LEADERS

AIBA is extremely pleased to welcome new members into its family: Mr Germain Mehintoas as the President of Fédération Béninoise de Boxe (Benin), Mr Hery Mamy Rabarisoa as the President of the Fédération Malgache de Boxe (Madagascar), Mr Sandeep Jajodia as the President of Boxing India, and Mr Dmitry Tikhomolov who was re-elected as President of the Belarus Boxing Federation.

ZERO CONCUSSIONS AT ASIAN GAMES PROVED AIBA’S DECISION WAS CORRECT

The 17th Asian Games were held recently in the city of Incheon, Korea, and the boxing competitions ended on October 3 with excellent outcomes for AIBA.

It was another major Elite men’s competition during which AIBA evaluated all bouts closely in order to check concussion rates without headguards.

However, in Incheon, there were only two TKOs, and at the post medical tests, both of those boxers did not show any signs of concussion.

This result demonstrates that concussion should not be an issue for the sport of boxing if Elite men’s competitions are held without headguards.

Nevertheless, now that the Asian Games are over, AIBA also plans to adopt a new system to continue to closely monitor all bouts to ensure any possible concussion will be observed.

At the same time, to prevent any cut, AIBAhas adopted very strict rules against any boxer who might have the habit of using his head and elbow as a tactic to conduct aggressive competition and to win matches.

As a result, the rate of cuts has substantially decreased to less than 3%.

AIBA believes cuts are not a major concern as they will naturally go away at the higher level of boxing competitions as time goes by, due to the fact that the boxers, coaches and referees will know how to conduct the bouts avoiding cuts.

AIBA EXEcutIvE cOmmIttEE dEcISIONS

AIBA held its 2014-2015 Executive Committee from July 15 to 18 in Istanbul, Turkey, and the AIBA Executive Committee (EC) discussed and approved the following matters:

EC approved the 35-million investment to support AIBA exclusive global marketing company, the Boxing Marketing Arm (BMA), from the First Commitment International Trade Ltd. (FCIT) based in Hong Kong and rejected all other investment proposals.

EC approved the agenda of the 2014 AIBA Congress which took place in November in Jeju, Korea, as well as the elections procedure and amendments to the AIBA Statutes.

EC approved the new budgets for the 2014-2015 period for all AIBA organizations as well as their business plans.

EC approved amendments to AIBA Technical Rules, AIBA Open Boxing (AOB), AIBA Pro Boxing (APB) and World Series of Boxing (WSB) Competition Rules which included:

• • Change of age for Elite men and womenboxers; however, men boxers aged 18 following their date of birth will be allowed to participate in Elite men’s Competitions (AOB, APB and WSB) immediately

• Referees’ and Judges’ Evaluators positions nolonger exist

• Protestisnolongerallowed• AIBA is also responsible for the certification of

National Level R&Js • Cavilonfilmshouldmandatorilybeusedbyboxers

at all Elite men’s competitions to prevent possible cuts

• Rules on Seconds were relaxed with regard tocommunication with their boxers during bouts

• All Continental Multi-Sports Games are includedin AIBA Ranking Point Competitions – new AIBA Ranking System

Additionally, EC chose the below host National Federations / cities for AIBA events due to take place in 2015–2016:

• Chinese Taipei Boxing Association to host the2015 AIBA Junior/Youth Women’s World Boxing Championships in Taipei City

• Boxing Federation of Russia to host the 2015AIBA Junior World Boxing Championships in St. Petersburg

• Boxing Federation of Russia to host the 2016AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships in St Petersburg

• Cameroon Boxing Federation to host the 2016AOB African Olympic Qualifying Event in Yaounde

The International Boxing Association (AIBA) celebrated its 2014 Congress on November 13 and 14 with Jeju, Korea, as venue for one of the most important events in recent boxing history.

The AIBA President, Dr Ching-Kuo Wu, was re-elected unopposed for a third consecutive term at the Congress by delegates who gave him a standing ovation.

Speaking after his re-election, Dr Wu said: “This is a very touching moment. You have all expressed your support for my candidature. With the confidence and trust you have given me, I can carry out the promises I made to you. And you know that I always keep my promises.

Dr Wu continued: “Eight years ago, I promised I would carry out reforms and I have done so. For the next four years, there is still a lot of work ahead of us. We have laid the foundations, but speaking as an architect, we need to add more layers to create a solid and enduring structure.

“I am very much looking forward to seeing the final outcome of these initiatives over the coming four years. I declare that ‘impossible is not our word’ until we have taken boxing back to its Golden Age.”

Dr Wu also outlined his key priorities for the coming four years, which included:

• Ensuring that more women were appointed toleadership positions in boxing;

• Establishing a ‘boxer centered’ organization byopening the doors for boxers to take up leadership positions;

• ContinuingtoexpandtheWorldSeriesofBoxing(WSB) competition and the AIBA Pro-Boxing competition (APB), while at the same time increasing their commercial value;

• Investing the revenues from Elite competitionsinto developing future generations of boxers by targeting funds towards the grassroots of the sport around the world.

Additionally, boxing leaders from all around the world agreed to pass a unanimous motion in support of the launch of the AIBA Pro Boxing Competition (APB).

The new competition, launched by the International Boxing Association (AIBA), features 80 of the world’s best boxers competing in an unprecedented top-class individual ranking-based format of ProStyle Boxing.

AIBA President Dr Ching-Kuo Wu said: “The APB is the foundation for boxing heroes and future legends which all young generations will follow and respect as their role models.”

APB was launched in October 2014 as the top tier of all AIBA competition programs, following AIBA Open Boxing (AOB) and the World Series of Boxing (WSB).

The competition aims to bring boxing back into a mainstream position in the world of sports by taking into account the needs of fans and providing a top quality, highly entertaining and easily understood kind of ProStyle Boxing. APB’s structure aims to provide fans with regular fight-cards in multiple markets.

APB has a merit-based and comprehensive ranking system, with transparent and fair professional judging, and it epitomizes boxing performance at its best with a full long-term Athlete Development approach – from grassroots to pro – to help identify the world’s true boxing champions.

Boxing leaders also approved the appointments of three AIBA Honorary Vice Presidents at the Congress, as as Abdellah Bessalem from Algeria, Keith Walker from New Zealand and Domingo Solano from the Dominican Republic who were awarded these honorary positions in appreciation for the work they had carried out for AIBA over many years.

Domingo Solano was first elected to the AIBA Executive to the AIBA Executive Committee in 1982 and was appointed Vice President for the first time in 2000. He was subsequently re-elected Vice President in 2006 and 2010.


At the close of Congress, delegates unanimously adopted ‘The Jeju Declaration’, endorsing the initiatives taken by AIBA to fulfil its mission to govern the sport of boxing in all of its forms.

The Jeju Declaration included resolutions to support:

• The building of a tangible and protected careerplan for AIBA boxers;

• Thecontinueddevelopmentofwomen’sboxingatall levels;

• Theharmonizationof technical rules for allAIBAcompetitions, as well as the removal of headguards in Elite men’s competitions;

• Protection of the image and reputation of theInternational Boxing Association from any ill-intentioned external influence;

• Prevention and sanction for any instances ofcorruption, match fixing, gambling and violence inside or outside the ring;

• Maintaining the principle of not using the word“Amateur” in AIBA sport programs, as well as avoiding being perceived as a “Combat and Martial Arts” sport – and instead protecting boxing’s ancient heritage as the “Noble Art”.

Abdellah Bessalem, from Algeria, was first elected to the Executive Committee in 1998 and was elected Vice President for the first time in 2006. He was subsequently re-elected in 2010.

Keith Walker, from New Zealand, was appointed an AIBA Executive Committee member in 2010 and elected Vice President in the same year.

To applause from the 350 delegates in the room, the three men were presented with certificates and plaques by President Wu.

The AIBA Statutes were amended on November 13, 2014 to include this new honorary position before these appointments.

In the final meeting, the Executive Committee approved all proposed amendments of AIBA Statutes to support the realization of recent years’ fast-paced developments and additionally approved the following issues:

• Decision tohave thepositionof “Cutmen” in allAIBA Competitions including WSB and APB as one of AIBA Technical Officials

• Finalize AIBA and each Confederation EventCalendar for 2015

• AIBA additional funds for supporting furtheradministrative excellence of all Confederations

• ApprovethenewAPBlogoanditsbranding• ApprovaloftheCongressElectionVotingProcess

On November 12, just a day before the 2014 AIBA Congress, a Media Day was held as boxing media representatives were invited to a full day of activities and information relating to AIBA.

After a welcome dinner on November 11, the itinerary for the next day was vast, beginning with the World Series of Boxing (WSB) Season V Draft in the morning.

In addition, the media were invited to join the presentation of AIBA Executive Director Mr Ho Kim on the ground-breaking competition format of AIBA Pro Boxing. While after lunch AIBA President Dr Ching-Kuo Wu gave a stirring speech regarding AIBA’s vision of boxing.

WSB CEO Mr Karim Bouzidi hosted a Q&A regarding the road to Season V of WSB and APB, before Mr David Gough, the CEO of BMA spoke about a sustainable commercial model of boxing.

Dr Charles Butler, Chairman of AIBA Medical Commission, then discussed the removal of headguards from AOB competitions, before a unique panel took place, as Mik Basi, 5-Star R&J, Dr Abdehamid Khadri, Vice Chairman of AIBA Medical Commission, World Champion Marlen Esperanza, Mirko World, former undefeated professional boxer and Adam Kusior, Chairman of AIBA Coaches Commission conducted a view from the ring discussion.

The Media Day was a resounding success for all involved and provided in-depth information to the media representatives on the key AIBA activities and competitions.

With the closing of the 2014 AIBA Congress, all delegates unanimously approved and unveiled the following declaration for the further enhancement of its key initiatives for the successful fulfilment of the mission set on October 22, 2007 in Chicago to govern the sport of boxing in all of its forms.

DECLARATIONS

• OneoftheprioritiesofAIBAinthenext4yearsisto build and develop a tangible career protection plan for all AIBA boxers, especially in regard to the safety and post boxing career welfare and options.

• Enhancement of overall women’s participationin the sport of boxing is another primary goal of AIBA and it will further invest into development programs for all levels of women boxers.

• AIBAdecisionsontherecentrevolutionaryadoptionof “One Technical Rules” for all AIBA Competition Programs, AOB, APB and WSB, and its decision to remove Headguards for Elite men’s Competitions have been unanimously endorsed by the Congress.

• AllmembersoftheInternationalBoxingAssociationwill give their best coordinated efforts to protect the image and reputation of the world governing body of the sport of boxing in all of its forms from any outside ill-intentioned influence which seeks to disrupt the harmony and unity of our organization.

• AIBAwill continueworking to prevent, includingthrough the use of disciplinary sanctions, any possible corruption, match fixing, gambling and violence inside or outside of rings.

• AIBA will continue maintaining its principle ofabandoning the use of the word “Amateur” in relation to its sport programs and dissociating the sport of boxing from images of it being a “Combat and Martial Art Sport” in order to ensure the protection of its original characteristic as the “Noble Art” sport.

All AIBA Congress delegates strongly support the present governance and all of the sport initiatives being implemented by the current administration for the best interests of all AIBA boxers and future young boxing generations.

The 2014 AIBA Annual Awards Ceremony was held in Jeju, Korea, where a wonderful ceremony was capped off by the honoring of some of the greatest talent in boxing.

AIBA youth and senior competitions, plus the World Series of Boxing (WSB) were all celebrated during the evening, with the awards winders from each organization delighted with their accomplishments.

The AIBA President, Dr Ching-Kuo Wu, hosted the event to tremendous acclaim, and the full list of winners is announced below:

Best WSB Supervisor 2014:Helmut RANZE from Germany

Ranze was the Vice Chairman of the AIBA Technical & Rules Commission before he became its Chairman in 2013. His knowledge of boxing has made him one of the most invaluable Supervisors in boxing, and he serves with great distinction in all AIBA Competitions.

Unfortunately, he could not be at the ceremony for medical reasons, and his trophy was received by Mr David Hoppstock, the Head Coach of the German team.

Best WSB R&J 2014:Mik BASI from England

Basi has been a boxing Referee and Judge since he turned 25, and had the great honor to take the Olympic Oath in the London 2012 Olympic Games on behalf of all Officials as his words went live to four billion people.

After becoming an AIBA 5-Star R&J in October 2012, he has subsequently been one of the stand-out R&Js at international tournaments worldwide and in all AIBA Competitions.

Best WSB Coach 2014:Rolando ACEBAL MONTE from the Cuba Domadores

His career as a boxing coach began in 1978 and he has gone on to become the Technical Director of the Cuba Olympic National Team, coaching some of the most successful boxers that the island has produced over the last twenty years including three Olympic Champions.

Monte led the Cuba Domadores to the WSB title in their debut season, but due to the Central American and Caribbean Games being held in Veracruz, Mexico, he could not be present in Jeju.

Best WSB Boxer 2014: Erislandy SAVON COTILLA from the Cuba Domadores

Born in 1990 in Cuba, Savon won the 91kg title at the 2008 AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships and the Super Heavyweight title at the Pan-American Championships.

In WSB Season IV, Savon was one of just two boxers to win all eight of his bouts, with the other being his teammate Yosbani Veitia, who also achieved an 8-0 record.

During the Season IV Finals, Savon defeated tough Azeri Abdulkadir Abdullayev in a crucial and exciting match in Baku, which helped his team Cuba Domadores to become WSB Champions in their debut season.

Best AIBA Technical Official 2014: Abdelhamid KHADRI from Morocco

Khadri was born in Morocco in 1954 and graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of Rabat where he specialized in Sports Medicine.

He has been coordinating the Medical Commission of the Moroccan National Olympic Committee for several years, and has been the Vice Chairman of the AIBA Medical Commission having lead the Ringside Doctors Workshop held in Assisi, Italy, in which 34 Doctors took part.

Best AIBA R&J 2014: Denis POPOV from Russia

Popov is a former Russian Champion boxer, but in 2004 he gave up competition and started his career as a Referee and Judge, gaining a 1-Star Referee & Judge status in 2005.

He became a 3-Star Referee & Judge in 2011 at the Test Event for the London 2012 Olympic Games, and was selected as the Best Referee & Judge of the Competition at the AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships Yerevan 2012.

Best AIBA Youth Woman Boxer 2014: Elzbieta WOJCIK from Poland

Born in 1996, Wojcik first appeared at the international stage in 2011 at the age of 15, and had a superb 2014 where she won a gold medal at the European Women’s Junior & Youth Championships in Assisi.

This success also included gold at the AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships in Sofia at the 75kg weight category which qualified her for the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games, a competition in which she won another gold medal on August 26, 2014.

Best AIBA Youth Man Boxer 2014: Javier IBANEZ DIAZ from Cuba

A two-time winner of Europe’s strongest youth competition the Pavlyukov Youth Memorial Tournament, and a winner in all of his national level events in Cuba, Diaz claimed gold in the AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships in Sofia, and the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games defeating Bulgaria’s Dushko Mihaylov Blagovestov in both competitions.

The success of the Cuban was helped by his involvement in the AIBA “Road to Sofia” Program.

Best AIBA Coach 2014: Myrzagali AITZHANOV from Kazakhstan

Awarded the title of Best AIBA Coach for the second successive year, Aitzhanov took over as Head Coach of the Kazakhstan Boxing Team after the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, and for six years he has been guiding a young squad of talented boxers with his huge experience and care.

Best AIBA Man Boxer 2014: Daniyar YELEUSSINOV from Kazakhstan

Born in 1991, Kazakhstan’s national team captain won his second Asian Games in Incheon where following his excellent performance in the semi-final against Turkmenistan’s former ASBC Asian Continental Champion Serdar Hudayberdiyev, he provided a different level of boxing than his final opponent, Uzbekistan’s 19-year-old Israil Madrimov.

AIBA World Champion Yeleussinov claimed the Best AIBA Men’s Boxer award for the second year in a row due to his virtuoso talent and leadership skills.

Best AIBA Woman Boxer: Claressa SHIELDS from the USA

Undefeated since May 2012, London 2012 Olympic Games gold medalist and AIBA Women’s Youth World Champion Claressa Shields is only 19, but added the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships to her incredible trophy cabinet after defeating China’s Incheon 2014 Asian Games winner Li Qian in the final to complete the golden set.

The defence of Shields was excellent, and her energy unparalleled as she won the bout by unanimous decision and achieved her first World Championships title.

Shields is one of the most exciting stars in the world of boxing, and her performances in Jeju displayed her undoubted potential, and her already glowing world class skills.

WOmEN BOXErS ShINE At AIBA WOmEN’S WOrld BOXING chAmPIONShIPS IN JEJu

The 2014 edition of the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships took place between November 16 and November 25 at the Halla Gymnasium in Jeju, Korea.

280 boxers from 67 nations competed in the event, with China, Hungary, India, Kazakhstan, Russia and United States of America all sending the maximum number of ten athletes to the Championships. The boxers competed in ten weight categories: 48 kg, 51 kg, 54 kg, 57 kg, 60 kg, 64 kg, 69 kg, 75 kg, 81 kg and 81+kg.

Prior to the start of the Championships, AIBA’s “Road to Jeju’ training program was held in Jeju at the beginning of November.

This was an instalment of the “Road to Dream” development program created by AIBA which is one of the most innovative and rewarding sporting initiatives in the world, and offers athletes and coaches from underprivileged and developing countries the opportunity to participate in major AIBA events as well as Olympic Games and to attend intensive training camps in the build-up to competitions.

AIBA provides each participant with airline tickets, accommodation, meals, full training facilities with equipment, training kits, full medical and massage services as well as covering insurance, visa expenses and local transportation.

“As one of AIBA’s Development Programs, the Road to Dream follows the ideals of the Olympic Movement by contributing to the social improvement of boxers, and the dream of being competitive at major AIBA events and Olympic Games” explained the AIBA President, Dr Ching-Kuo Wu.

The Jeju version of the program was a resounding success, perfectly encapsulated by Panama’s Atheyna Bylon who sensationally claimed the Welterweight class (69 kg) gold medal against Russia’s Saadat Abdullaeva.

Before the tournament, Bylon was relatively unknown at the international level and usually competed at the Middleweight (75 kg) weight category, but at the Road to Jeju camp, rapid improvements saw her and her coaches decide together that her chances in Jeju would be better at the Welterweight class.

Despite the drop down in weight, Bylon entered the eighth edition of the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships with little expectations.

After all, no previous boxer from her country had ever won a bout in an AIBA women’s competition, let alone won a medal.

The chances were widely against Bylon, but she defied all of the odds to secure one of the most unexpected gold medals in the history of any boxing competition.

Bylon defeated all five of her tough rivals in the Championships, writing history with each victory, all of which were accomplished with superb boxing skills and tremendous heart.

“I am super satisfied with my performance in Jeju. My tactic was clear - to keep the distance, and I tried to follow the instruction of my coach throughout the whole Championships. I am feeling great joy and so

proud to get a gold medal for my country, Panama, in a World Championships. I think I need some weeks to believe I am the World Champion,” said Bylon after she had written history in Jeju.

The powerful Panama sensation was one of ten gold medalists, with the first being won at Light flyweight (48 kg) by Kazakhstan’s Nazym Kyzaybay who improved on the bronze medal she won at the 2012 AIBA Women’s World Championships when she widely outpointed former AIBA Women’s Youth World Champion India’s Shamjetsabam Sarjubala Devi.



London 2012 Olympic Games bronze medalist Marlen Esparza who also claimed a bronze medal in her first AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in New Delhi, was in the Flyweight class (51 kg) final against England’s Lisa Whiteside who replaced London 2012 Olympic Champion Nicola Adams in their squad.

Her English rival claimed a bronze medal at the last edition of the AIBA Women’s World Championships in Qinhuangdao at the Featherweight class (57 kg), and Whiteside was able to control the opening portion of the fight, before Esparza improved her tactics as the fight progressed.

The US boxer displayed wonderful footwork in the middle part of the bout, and her efforts were enough to win by a narrow split decision.

Bulgaria’s Stanimira Petrova defeated four tough rivals on the road to the finals which was surprising enough as she was relatively unknown coming into the Championships, but her final opponent was the main favorite of the Bantamweight class (54 kg), Italy’s defending EUBC European Women’s Continental Champion Marzia Davide.

The Italian claimed her first medal, a silver at the second edition of the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in Antalya twelve years ago, and was looking for gold over a decade later.

This was a rematch of a bout which took place at the Mohamed VI Trophy in Marrakech earlier on in the year, which was won closely by Davide.

In the return match, Petrova’s tactics were much better against the Italian veteran, and her youth and sheer effort delivered an unexpected gold medal in Jeju.

Russia had four finalists in Jeju, and walked away with three golds including a deserved win for Russia’s EUBC European Women’s Continental Champion Zinaida Dobrynina, who enjoyed Featherweight (57 kg) glory against Philippines’ China Open Tournament

winner Nesthy Petecio who eliminated the defending champion, Tiara Brown of the US in the semi-finals.

Dobrynina managed to prevent the attacks of the quick Filipino boxer in the opening round, which meant that Petecio’s attacks were stifled in the early part of the fight.

Despite some clever adjustments from the Asian athlete, the Russian boxer kept control, which was enough to get the gold medal.

Before the start of the Championships, the most anticipated bout was a likely Lightweight (60 kg) contest between four-time World Champion Katie Taylor of Ireland, and Russia’s two-time AIBA Women’s World Champion Sofya Ochigava, and the two were

set to continue their storied rivalry in the quarter-finals, before an injury to Ochigava prevented her from taking to the ring.

Taylor shrugged off the disappointment of missing out on the superclash, and after a tough contest in the semi-finals against China’s Asian Games winner Yin Junhua, the Irish icon then had to meet for the gold medal with 27-year-old Yana Alekseevna to secure her fifth title.

Azerbaijan’s lone finalist tried to get close in the opening round of the Lightweight class (60 kg) final, but Taylor picked up the pace in the second round, and though it wasn’t her best win in the competition, she ultimately won a well deserved fifth gold medal, and firmly established her reputation as one of the

greatest boxers of all time, and matches the five gold medals of India’s Mary Kom.

“It is an absolute privilege to equal that record of five World Championships titles, and I thank God for another great victory. I am absolutely delighted. It was such a tight contest, every round was very close and tricky. The tactics from my dad and Zuar Antia were spot on again. Every Championships is so hard to win and so hard to defend,” said Ireland’s Katie Taylor following her victory.

Russia’s second gold of the competition was won by Anastasia Beliakova who comfortably defeated England’s Sandy Ryan at Light welterweight (64 kg), while America’s teenage supremo Claressa Shields defeated China’s Incheon 2014 Asian Games winner Li Qian in the final of the Middleweight class (75 kg) to complete a golden set of medals at just 19-years old.

The 2014 AIBA Best Woman Boxer of the year enjoyed a hugely impressive performance in the semi-finals against Canada’s two-time AIBA Women’s World Champion Ariane Fortin-Brochu, and is now an AIBA World Champion, with more gold medals from the London 2012 Olympic Games, the 2013 AIBA Women’s Youth World Boxing Championships, plus the 2012 and 2014 AMBC American Women’s Continental Championships.

At Light Heavyweight (81 kg), China’s Yang Xiaoli continued her nation’s dominance at the weight class as she won every round against India’s Saweety Boora, while in the highest Heavyweight category of 81+kg, Russia’s Zenfira Magomedaliyeva claimed gold over Kazakhstan’s Lazzat Kungeybayeva.

After the incredibly hard work of everybody involved in the Championships, from the boxers and their training teams, to the staff behind the scenes, the next AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships will emanate from Almaty, Kazakhstan in 2016, and will be the qualifying competition for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

APB - thE rEvOlutION IN BOXING

AIBA Pro Boxing (APB) is an unprecedented, top-class Pro Boxing competition based on individual rankings and introduced by AIBA to showcase the best features of pro-style boxing.

The pre-ranking phase, which runs through to January 31, 2015, will identify authentic champions in each weight category. For the first time in history, boxing fans will witness a comprehensive, merit-based ranking system in Pro Boxing.

Rio 2016 will be the first Olympic Games to allow pro boxers to compete. The only way pro boxers can qualify for the Olympic Games in 2016 is the APB competition, which is fully supported by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

The qualification path to the Games will be through competing in the APB from its launch in 2014 until the APB Olympic Qualifying Events in 2015.

Based on the rankings decided by the seven members of the APB Boxers’ Selection and Ranking Committee, a shortlist of 120 boxers was whittled down to 80 boxers who initially competed twice over six rounds of three minutes to establish world rankings in each of the ten weight categories.

Then, based on these world rankings, each boxer again fights at least three times over six rounds in the Matches for Champions, with those successful pitted against each other to challenge for the title of APB World Champion, contested over eight rounds.

Prior to the beginning of the competition, The AIBA President, Dr Ching-Kuo Wu, attended the AIBA Pro Boxing Orientation Workshop which took place at the AIBA World Boxing Academy.

The boxers involved in the inaugural season of the revolutionary AIBA Pro Boxing arrived to the Academy in the Talgar region near Almaty, Kazakhstan, for an intensive 3-days workshop ahead of the start of the brand new competition. This workshop was divided into several modules and covered various aspects of APB, from the competition rules and system, to commercial and media matters and many more.

During his visit, Dr Ching-Kuo Wu addressed the APB boxers: “It is a great pleasure to be here with you, the best boxers of today. The APB is a top-class competition which will showcase the best features of pro-style boxing and you are all part of this new path of boxing. I am equally pleased that we have the possibility to host this important workshop in the AIBA World Boxing Academy, which is fully equipped with all necessary facilities to allow you to continue your physical preparation for the competition. I wish you a lot of luck and success and I am looking forward to seeing you in action in APB”

The APB boxers appreciated the opportunity given to them by AIBA to get together and learn in detail all aspects of the upcoming competition, and the boxers were really impressed by the AIBA World Boxing Academy, and many underlined that it represents a real Olympic village specifically constructed for boxers. It was unanimously recognized that the Academy is an outstanding venue which provides all training facilities and perfect conditions for an excellent physical preparation.

A truly worthwhile Workshop culminated on September 17 when the Grand Opening of the AIBA World Boxing Academy was followed by the APB Official Draw, revealing the eagerly-awaited sequence of matches for the ten different weight categories.

The APB Official Draw was held on September 17, 2014 in Almaty Kazakhstan. It decided the match-ups for the first APB Events of the APB Pre-Ranking Matches. Two boxers were seeded by the APB Ranking Commission and placed at the top and bottom of the brackets. The other six boxers were randomly positioned through a manual draw.

Now, the APB Inaugural Title Matches will determine the first APB Champion in each weight category who will then fight against the first Challenger.

Cycle 1 will conclude with a Title Match in which the ‘Challenger’ (the winner of Rounds 1 & 2 of the current Cycle) competes against the current APB Champion. Both Champion and Challenger in each weight category, at the end of Cycle 1 gain automatic qualification to compete at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

These APB Inaugural Title Matches will take place from January 23 to February 19, 2015 and will determine the first APB Champion per weight category. Starting from Cycle 1, scheduled for March 2015, all Cycles will conclude with a Title Match in which the ‘Challenger’ (the winner of Rounds 1 & 2 of the current Cycle) competes against the current APB Champion (the

winner of the previous cycle’s Title Match). The winner of the Title Match will then be the new APB Champion for the following Cycle.

To coincide with the Inaugural Title Matches, AIBA have unveiled a new brand, logo and belt design that conveys the vision of the APB competition to the global boxing community – aiming to excite and inspire young athletes whilst also evoking boxing’s rich sporting and cultural heritage.

The new APB logo has a bold and fluid design which reflects the rhythm of the sport. All of these elements combined have resulted in a unique mark that depicts the sport in its entirety: straight lines (direct punches); soft (ropes, floor); round curves (gloves, footwork). Solid, heavy and round, the new logo conveys the essence of “weight” - the weight of the sport, of the boxers, of APB.

• APBisuniqueinthatitallowsaboxertoturnproand remain under the patronage of hir National Federation, and therefore the AIBA, throughout his career. This means that for the first time a boxer can turn professional while still preserving his eligibility to fulfil the honor of representing his country in future Olympic Games and Continental Championships.

• BoxersaresignedtotheAPBcompetitiononfive-year contracts with the Boxing Marketing Arm (BMA) to compete in APB. Each signed boxer will have a minimum of four guaranteed bouts at an agreed purse and will be able to maximize his training programs and fight schedule throughout the year with a regular match calendar. Additionally, National Member Federations will receive a sum equivalent to a percentage of the revenue earned by their boxers.

• Theeventisshowcasedinternationallyandstagedaround the world with China, Germany, Russia, Argentina, Italy, Azerbaijan, Austria, Algeria, Cuba and Kazakhstan all confirmed as host nations and discussions taking place with other countries.

WSB fOrEIGN BOXErSdrAft fOr SEASON v

WOrld SErIES Of BOXING

One of the most exciting days on the sporting calendar, the World Series of Boxing (WSB) Foreign Boxers Draft for Season V took place on November 12 in Jeju, a day before the AIBA 2014 Congress started.

“The Draft is especially important this season, as every boxer competing in WSB will have the opportunity to qualify for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, at the same time that they are trying to achieve glory for their respective Franchises,” said WSB Chief Executive Officer Karim Bouzidi ahead of this grand occasion.

Using a method similar to Drafts including the National Football League (NFL), this is the opening door for all AIBA recognized National Federations to get a taste of the first and only pro-style boxing league and to give their boxers an extra path to qualify for the Olympic Games.

The boxers joining the Franchises through the WSB Draft can - in addition to living the Olympic Dream - sign merit-based two-year contracts, as the salary scale defined for them rewards performance by increasing the boxers’ bonuses as they accumulate wins to their records.

Additionally, the WSB Foreign Boxers Draft also replies to the need of the Franchises to complete their squads with quality athletes, and is a unique opportunity for them to recruit boxers from all over the globe, bringing world class boxing stars to all weight categories competing in WSB.

Moreover, the Draft is a magnificent tool to balance the competition, not only does it allow the teams ranked lower in the previous seasons to have the first choices of foreign boxers for the next two seasons, but it also reduces the financial gap between Franchises. This is done by bringing all the foreign boxers, besides the retained ones from the previous season, to the league under the same conditions.

Another important fact is that the picks can be sold and/or exchanged, which opens a new dimension for negotiations between Franchises. Immediately prior to the Draft, a Draw was conducted to integrate the new Franchises joining WSB in the current season, into the final selection order. These new Franchises could be allocated any position within the selection order of the other Franchises, which picked in reverse order of their results of Season IV.



The first picks were given to the teams who failed to progress after the Regular Season, followed by the quarter-finalists, semi-finalists, runners-up, and finally the WSB Champions, with the new Franchises interspersed in between as decided by the Draw.

Once the final selection order was announced, the first round of the Draft commenced, with each Franchise able to select one Boxer per round. After each team has utilized its position in the drafting order, whether by trading or selecting a boxer, a round was complete. Each Franchise had two minutes to announce a drafted boxer in each round. If no announcement is made, the Franchise were deemed to have declined its turn on that occasion and the two minutes of the next Franchise started counting.

The Draft had as many rounds as the Franchises needed until all Franchises could no longer further select boxers, either because they had reached the maximum of eight in the squad - including their retained foreign boxers from previous seasons, or because they have declined to select in two consecutive rounds. As per the WSB Competition Rules, a Franchise cannot select more than three foreign boxers of the same country.

When selecting a boxer, the Franchise had to define whether the Boxer was being selected as a main or reserve boxer, and each Franchise was only allowed to draft one main boxer per weight class.

Many international superstars were in the Draft this year, including AIBA’s number four ranked Middleweight Anthony Fowler, former World Champion Detelin Dalakliev, as well as France’s former WSB Team Champion Alexis Vastine.

One of the most wanted fighters in the Draft was Ireland’s Olympic bronze medalist Michael Conlon, and the big guns in the competition including Italia Thunder and Ukraine Otamans were interested in a main boxer in the 52kg weight category, so he could have his choice of suitors. He ended up drafted as one of the boxers to compete for Italia Thunder. Commenting after the results of the Draw, Conlan said: “I am very excited to represent Italia Thunder in Season V of WSB. WSB is a fantastic opportunity to compete against the best boxers in the world and most important for me is to qualify for Rio. The level of opposition and the regular matches are great for my development.”

The Foreign Boxer Draft for the upcoming Season was represented by 235 World Top Boxers including Commonwealth Games, Asian Games and European Champions as well as Olympic, World and Continental medal winners coming from 53 different countries and five continents.



WSB GrOuP ArEvIEW fOr SEASON v

Season V of the World Series of Boxing (WSB) is widely anticipated to be the greatest instalment of the world class boxing competition, with three new Franchises, plus two returning ones joining defending Champions Cuba Domadores and ten more teams competing to achieve team glory.

WSB is the only Global Team Boxing competition where national teams go head to head in a league format, and this season will see 16 teams compete in two groups of eight with the top three teams qualifying for play offs.

Group A consists of the current WSB defending champions Cuba Domadores, Season IV semi-finalists Russian Boxing Team, Season III runners-up Ukraine Otamans, the returning British Lionhearts, exciting Mexico Guerreros, durable Algeria Desert Hawks, plus two new Franchises, from China and Morocco.

With four continents represented in the group, many pugilism aficionados are excited about the all-African encounter between Algeria Desert Hawks, and newcomers Atlas Lions Moroccan Boxing Team. With Algeria’s prior experience in WSB, they will be wanting to assert themselves as the best African team in the tournament, but Morocco are being tipped to put together an impressive squad, and they will meet each other in week 6, and week 13 of the season.

Defending Champions Cuba Domadores were the number one seeds in the Draw, which resulted in them starting the season at home against Morocco in week one. The Cuban team lost just once in WSB in their debut season away to Russian Boxing Team in the group stages, and they will seek to avenge that loss in week 10 this time around.

Russian Boxing Team reached the semi-final stage last season, in part due to their excellent home form, and they start the season at home to Algeria. Consistently excellent in WSB, the Russian are always contenders to win every match they compete in, and there are many within the boxing world who consider this to be their year.



British Lionhearts reached the quarter-finals in Season III, and after missing Season IV, they return to WSB with a team full of confidence and flair. Boasting many decorated medalists from a variety of international competitions, including eight medalists from the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, the return of the Lionhearts has resulted in much media attention in Britain, and they will be looking to start their season in style.

Mexico Guerreros was the Franchise to eliminate British Lionhearts in Season III, but failed to sparkle last season. As one of the proudest boxing nations in the world, they will be giving it their all to succeed in Season V, and after a tricky opening tie away in

Ukraine, Mexico then have two home fixtures in a row against their African competitors, and will be hoping that a quick start will help them to qualify for the knock-out stages.

China Dragons are back in WSB after fielding the Beijing Dragons in Seasons I and II, and after much success in international boxing competitions over the last two years, their squad will be confident of causing upsets. There are no easy contests in WSB, but China’s start to the season is a particularly tricky one, as they will face Britain, Russia, Ukraine and Cuba in their first four matches.

Lastly, Ukraine Otamans have consistently qualified for the knock-out stages of WSB during their history in the competition, and they will be looking to reclaim the form they showed in reaching the Finals in the third season of WSB.


Season V of the World Series of Boxing (WSB) provides an unprecedented opportunity for boxers to achieve individual qualification for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

As WSB boxers retain their Olympic eligibility, the road to Rio 2016 Olympic Games is paved with possible gold for the competitors, with a quota of 17 places up for grabs throughout the competition, while this number was only five before the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Categories from 52kg to 81kg will be granted two quotas each, while 49kg, 91kg and 91+kg will each be granted one quota. The magnitude of this opportunity has not been lost on the Franchises, who are all training with intense discipline to make Season V the most entertaining, enthralling and important edition to date.

In Group B, former winners and future hopefuls will challenge for success, and with four teams from Europe, two from North America, plus two South American Franchises included, the global aspect of WSB is represented fully.

South America has been home to many of the greatest boxers of all time, and Argentina Condors, fresh off their second season of WSB action, are looking to establish themselves as the dominant Franchise from their continent in Season V.

To accomplish that goal, they will have to perform better than the new Franchise from Venezuela, who according to many boxing insiders, are amassing an impressive squad for the upcoming season.

The two South American boxing giants will meet each other in week 5, and week 12 of the season, and both will be hoping they will be in position to progress into the knock-out stages of the competition come the end of the group stage.

One Franchise who will be confident of getting out of the group is the Azerbaijan Baku Fires, who lost the

engrossing WSB Season IV Final against the sublime Cuba Domadores, by the narrowest of margins.

The Baku Fires will be looking to go one further in Season V, and they have the knowledge and awareness of how to successfully negotiate their way through the group stages in order to reach the latter stages of the tournament.

Astana Arlans Kazakhstan were eliminated by Azerbaijan in Season IV, but the two Franchises struck up a kinship after their hard fought semi-finals contest.


WSB GrOuP BrEvIEW fOr SEASON v


Many WSB teams would be delighted with a semi-final finish, but as the Season III Champions, Kazakhstan will be looking to go all the way again this time around.

In order to fulfill their hopes, they will have to beat the big teams, and their matches with Azerbaijan in week 3 and week 10 will be keenly awaited by WSB fans.

Italia Thunder have been one of the most successful Franchises in WSB history, and the flamboyant team have one of the finest squads in the entire competition.

After winning Season II, the Italians have failed to reach the semi-finals stage in the last two seasons, and they have a difficult start to life in Group B.

Their season starts with two tough away matches, firstly against Azerbaijan, and then they face USA Knockouts in week 2.

The Knockouts reached the quarter-final stage last season, before running into the dominant Cuba Domadores, and the American side will at least want to replicate their accomplishments in Season V.

They will have to work hard to maintain their supremacy as the North American leaders of WSB, as one of the best boxing nations in the world joins WSB, with Puerto Rico looking to produce a hurricane over the competition.

Six of Puerto Rico’s eight medals in their Olympic Games history belong to boxers, and this Caribbean island, with a population of just over 3.5 million people, boasts the highest index in terms of World Boxing Champions per capita on the planet, statistics that their WSB fighters will use to spur them on to possible glory in the competition.

Completing the group at this moment will be Hussars Poland, who will be looking to forget their disappointing season last year, and concentrate on improving their talented squad even further.

The Polish team have great durability and courage, and they will seek to turn their resilience and willing into results and wins, starting with their first week match away against Puerto Rico.

WSB Season V started on Thursday January 15 at London’s legendary York Hall with British Lionhearts taking on China Dragons.

Investment in coaches is a key priority for AIBA to enable us to continually deliver top quality boxers to the world stage.

The Grand Opening of the AIBA World Boxing Academy coincided with the APB Boxers Workshop, taking place for nearly 80 of the best boxers in the world who all compete in the revolutionary pro-style Tournament.

This momentous occasion was also attended by the Minister of Culture and Sports of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Mr Aristanbek Mukhamediuly, the Vice President of Kazakhstan Boxing Federation and AIBA Executive Committee Member Mr Serik Konakbayev,

the Executive Director of Kazakhstan Boxing Federation Mr Bekzhan Bektenov and honorable guests.

“Since I became the President of AIBA in 2006, it has always been my dream to build an Academy. Today this dream came true due to hard work of AIBA and the Kazakhstan Boxing Federation. This Academy is the unique sports complex in the world and I am proud that this place will become a home for all members of AIBA Family” said the AIBA President Dr Ching-Kuo Wu.

The Academy represents a unique educational and training complex, which will become the center for development of boxing.
