12809. Hudson Falls is the county seat of WA County.

Barber: Abstracts of Wills of Otsego Co.* 1794-1850, Vol 2, being Liber E-H, 1 & 2. Bk E 1834-1824, p. 68 (actually p 70, 60 in index) Dec 27-1813-Mar 4 1814, has Ezekial Chapman (can this be Zenas' brother?), of Maryland (a southern township of Otsego Co), and mentions Olive Wallace (the woman with whom he has co-habited ), sons Aron, Ezekial, David, Daughter Esther Fuller, Eunice G. wife of Samuel Chapman. Executrix: Olive Wallace. Witnesses Daniel Olmstead, Eliphalet Mead, Stephen Olmstead.

In Zenas' application for his share of Jerusha's pension in 1839, at her death, Ezekiel is given as of Warren, so perhaps the above Ezekial (in will) is from another Chapman line. There is a Warren County, No. of Glens Falls, of which Lake George is the county seat, but it is more likely that Warren Township, Herkimer County, pop 978, just above Springfield Center, Otsego Co, is meant in the applications.

Notes for Joseph B Chapman:

[Chapman.FTW]

There has long been a misconception that this Joseph was descended from William of New London. See Chapman Family Genealogy, F.W. Chapman, Hartford, 1865, p.268, which has the WRONG Joseph. It says he was a mariner.

Mather: Refugees of 1776, p.291: "Joseph removed to Norwich, Conn. where he died 10 June 1725." [perhaps the wrong Joseph again?]

But see Philip Chapman Ellsworth's meticulous research separating this Joseph from the Joseph descended from Edward of Ipswich MA in Chapman Chatter #27, Fall 1991.

On Feb 5 1707 Joseph's intention of marriage was recorded in Ipswich (Gil Alford: Marriage date 5 Apr 1707). He and Marcy moved to New London township betw 1707 and 1714. Marcy's mother & father moved to Norwich or New London in 1707. Joseph was admitted to Norwich by public vote in 1715. Was said to be a mariner (Norwich isinland on the Thames, a navigable tidal waterway). In 1718 he joined the First Congregational Church of Norwich.

Page 39: Ahnentafel of CFA Member #413 Danny Mc Caulley Chapman …Notes for Riley Chapman: [Chapman.FTW] Source: Eleanor Chapman, from History of Scott County, Iowa, 1882 Chicago, no author

The two descending Chapman lines from Edward and William were in the Norwich-Colchester area and must have met.

1. Marcy's sister Katherine married Daniel Chapman, a son of John Chapman of Colchester and grandson of William Chapman of New London (marriage recorded in Colchester), and

2. After Joseph's death (1725), Marcy married William Chapman Junr (recorded in a Colchester land record). William was the son of John Chapman of Colchester, the eldest son of William of New London. No doubt William and Marcy met through her sister Katherine. Were there other connections between these two lines?

Thomas Meade migrated from Somerset during the reign of Henry VI [before 1471] and settled in Clavering, Essex. He left a will dated 1504 in Prerogative Canterbury Court. In his will he names his brother William Mede, his wife Johanna, and his four sons, Richard, Thomas, Robert and John.

Thomas's descendants lived in Clavering, Elmdon, Berden, Great Easton, and Chrishall, which are all within about ten miles of each other in northwest Essex.

His descendant, William Mead, Migrated to America in 1635. In 1780, William's descendant Enoch Mead built a house and named it Elmdon.

The information here is based mainly on wills, which are documented separetely for each of the people involved, and on Visitations. The Visitation of Essex, 1634 [No 1] shows the descentants of Thomas Meade, son of Thomas

Parish: St. Mary Redcliffe, Bristol

Inscription: Thomas Mede, Thrice mayor [ 1475 ]

Coat of Arms: Gules a chevron ermine between three trefoils slipped argent

St. Thomas Mede is probably the father of Thomas Mede of Somerset, who went to Clavering, Essex in about 1470 and died there in 1504. The connection between Sir Thomas Mede of Wraxall, Somerset, and Thomas in Clavering, Essex, is based on three pieces of circumstantial evidence.

First, the names. There were three generations of Thomas Medes in Somerset and five or six generations of Thomas Medes or Meades in Essex.

Second, the Coat of Arms. Several Meades in Essex used the same coat of arms: a chevron ermine between three trefoils slipped argent.

Third, Clavering. The niece of Thomas Mede of Wraxall, Isabel Mede, married Maurice de Bekeley. Maurice was related to Elizabeth de Berkeley [his father's first cousin], who owned the manor of Clavering Essex. The manor passed from her to her husband, Richard Beauchamp, Earl of Warwick, and from his to his son-in-law, Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick. Thomas Mede of Clavering moved to Clavering, Essex, in abut 1470, dying there in 1504. Possibly he was rewarded with land for supporting the Berkeley family at the Battle of Nibley Green, or for supporting the Earl of Warwick in 1470, or simply to help out a cousin.- from Vance Mead webpage on Mead HX [NY 160]

Notes for Thomas Mede:

According to William Barrett in 'History and antiquities of the city of Bristol." Thomas Mede of Wraxall is the decendent { probably great grandson ] of Nicholas atte Mede [ born about 1290 ], who was assessed for taxes in Somerset in 1327/28. Sir Thomas Mede was his son, - Vance Mead webpage on Mead HX [NY 160 ].

ii. Philip Mede, born Abt. 1415; died Abt. 1475 in St. Mary Redcliffe, Bristol, England; married Isabelle.

Notes for Philip Mede:

Philip Mede was the mayor of Bristol three times and once the MP for Bristol. His is said to have been descended from the Mede family of Wraxall, Somerset. Master John Mede, Rector of Wraxall, Somerset, witnessed Philip's will. In 1457 Philip Mede bought a messuage, 10 acres land, 70 acres pasture, 10 acres meadow at Rolveston near Banwell, Somerset.

From the verger of St. Mary Redcliffe:

"The tomb of the Mede family is aprox. 10 ft high by 18 ft by 3 ft. It contains in one compartment the effigies of Thomas and his wife and in the other a brass of Philip and his two wives. This rectangular brass shows Philip kneeling with his wife. Philip's helmet is seen in front of him leaving his head uncovered and showing his long hair. Philip Mede's daughter married Maurice the younger brother of William 12th Lord Berkeley. Philip also supported with his men the Berkeley family at the last private battle fought on English soil at Nibley Green in 1470.

Philip Mede was Mayor of Bristol in 1459, 1462 and 1469. Thomas was also Mayor but is dressed in merchant clothing and as he had the tomb built with its fine carving I suppose he managed to gain the family wealth."- from the Vance Mead webpage on Mead HX [NY 160]
