safety precautions that should be observed in conjunction with engine startup, shutdown, oroperation, or protective apparel that may be needed to operate the equipment.

1. ENGINE SAFETY

1.1 Important safety informationMost accidents with engine can be prevented if you follow all instructions in this manual and on

the engine. Some of the most common hazards are discussed below, along with the best way to

protect yourself and others.

Owner Responsibilities:AMICO engines are designed to give safe and dependable service if operated according to

instructions. Read and understand this owner's manual before operating the engine. Failure to

do so could result in personal injury or equipment damage.

Know how to stop the engine quickly, and understand the operation of all controls. Never

permit anyone to operate the engine without proper instructions.

Do not allow children to operate the engine. Keep children and pets away from the area ofoperation.

Refuel With CareGasoline is extremely flammable, and gasoline vapor can explode. Refuel outdoors, in a well-ventilated area, with the engine stopped. Never smoke near gasoline, and keep other flames

and sparks away. Always store gasoline in an approved container. If any fuel is spilled, make

sure the area is dry before starting the engine.

Hot ExhaustThe muffler becomes very hot during operation and remains hot for a while after stopping the

engine. Be careful not to touch the muffler while it is hot. Let the engine cool before storing it

indoors.

To prevent fire hazards and to provide adequate ventilation for stationary equipment

applications, keep the engine at least 3 feet (1 meter) away from building walls and other equip-

ment during operation. Do not place flammable objects close to the engine.

Carbon Monoxide Hazards:Exhaust gas contains poisonous carbon monoxide. Avoid inhalation of exhaust gas. Never runthe engine in closed garage or confined area.

Other Equipment:Review the instructions provided with the equipment powered by this engine for any additional

2.2 Controls

2.2.1 Fuel valve:

Page 7: AHG190F

-3-

The chock lever opens and closes the choke valve in the carburetor.

The closed position enriches the fuel mixture for starting a cold engine.

The open position provides the correct fuel mixture for operation after starting, and for restarting

a warm engine.

2.2.2 Engine switch

The engine switch enables and disables the ignition system. The engine switch must be in ON position for the engine to run.Turning the engine switch to the OFF position stops the engines.

2.2.3 Choke lever

Some engine application use a remotely-mounted choke control rather than the engine-mounted

choke lever shown here.

3. PRE-CHECKS BEFORE RUNNING THE ENGINE

IS YOUR ENGINE READY TO GO?For your safety, and to maximize the service life of your equipment, it is very important to take a

few moments before you operate the engine to check its condition. Be sure to take care of anyproblem you find, or have your servicing dealer correct it, before you operate the engine.

Improperly maintaining this engine, or falling to correct a problem before operation, couldcause a malfunction in which you could be seriously injured.

Always perform a preparation inspection before each operation.

Before beginning your preparation checks, be sure the engine is on level surface andthe engine switch is in the OFF position.

Check the General Condition of the Engine

Look around and underneath the engine for signs of oil or gasoline leaks.

Remove any excessive dirt or debris, especially around the muffler and recoil starter.

Look for signs of damage.

Check that all shields and covers are in place, and all nuts, bolts, and screws are tightened.

Check the Engine.

Check the engine oil level. Running the engine with a low oil level can cause engine damage.

However, to avoid the inconvenience of an unexpected shudown, always check the engine oillevel before startup.

The Oil Alert system will automatically stop the engine before the oil level falls below safe limits.

Running the engine with persistent spark knock or pinging can cause engine damage.

Running the engine with persistent spark knock or pinging is misuse, and the Distributor's

Limited Warranty does not cover parts damaged by misuse.

Refuel in a well-ventilated area before starting the engine. If the engine has been running, allowit to cool. Refuel carefully to avoid spilling fuel. Do not fill above the fuel strainer shoulder. Afterrefueling, tighten the fuel tank cap securely.Never refuel the engine inside a building where gasoline fumes may reach flames or sparks.Keep gasoline away from appliance pilot lights, barbecues, electric appliances, power tools, etc.Spilled fuel is not only a fire hazard, it carses environmental damage. Wipe up spills immediately.

Fuel can damage paint and plastic. Be careful not to spill fuel when filling your fuel tank.Damage caused by spilled fuel is not covered under warranty.

FUEL RECOMMENDATIONSUse unleaded gasoline with a pump octane rating of 86 or higher.

These engines are certified to operate on unleaded gasoline. Unleaded gasoline produces lessengine and spark plug deposits and extends exhaust system life.Never use stale or contaminated gasoline or an oil/gasoline mixture. Avoid getting dirt or waterin the fuel tank.Occasionally you may hear a light spark knock or pinging (metallic rapping noise) while oper-ating under heavy loads. This is no cause for concern. If spark knock or pinging occurs at a steady engine speed, under normal load, change brands ofgasoline. If spark knock or pinging persists, see an arthorized servicing dealer.

N O T I C E!

Incorrect spark plugs can cause engine damage.

1. Disconnect the spark plug cap, and clean off any dirt from around the spark plug area.2. Remove the spark plug with a 13/16-inch spark plug wrench.

3. Inspect the spark plug. Replace it if the electrodes are worn, or if the insulator is cracked orchipped. Clean the spark plug with a wire brush if you are going to reuse it.

4. Measure the spark plug electrode gap with a suitable gauge. The gap should be 0.028-0.031in (0.70-0.80 mm). Correct the gap, if necessary, by carefully bending the side electrode.

5. Install the spark plug carefully, by hand, to avoid cross-threading.6. After the spark plug seats, tighten with a 13/16-inch spark plug wrench to compress thewasher. If reinstalling the used spark plug, tighten 1/8-1/4 turn after the spark plug seats.

Page 22: AHG190F

-18-

If installing a new spark plug, tighten 1/2 turn after the spark plug seats.

A loose spark plug can overheat and damage the engine.Overtightening the spark plug can damage the threads in the cylinder head.

7. Attach the spark plug cap.

5.12 Idle adjustment1. Start the engine outdoors, and allow it to warm up to operating temperature.2. Move the throttle lever to the slowest position.3. Turn the throttle stop screw to obtain the standard idle speed.Standard idle speed:1440 140rpm+

5.13 Service the spark plugYour engine is not factory-equipped with a spark arrester. In some areas, it is illegal to operatean engine without a spark arrester. Check local laws and regulations. A spark arrester is avail-able from authorized servicing dealers. The spark arrester must be serviced every 100 hours to keep it functioning as designed. If the engine has been running, the muffler will be very hot. Allow the muffler to cool beforeservicing the spark arrester.1. Remove the two 8 mm nuts and remove the muffler from the cylinder.2. 6. HELPFUL TIPS & SUGGESTIONS

6.1 Store the engine6.1.1 Storage PreparationProper storage preparation is essential for keeping your engine troublefree and looking good. The following steps will help to keep rust and corrosion from impairing your engine's functionand appearance, and will make the engine easier to start when you use it again.

6.1.2 CleaningIf the engine has been running, allow it to cool for at least half an hour before cleaning. Clean allexterior surfaces, touch up any damaged paint, and coat other areas that may rust with a lightfilm of oil.

Using a garden hose or pressure washing equipment can force water into the air cleaneror muffler opening. Water in the air cleaner will soak the air cleaner, and water thatpasses through the air cleaner of muffler can enter the cylinder, causing damage.Water contacting a hot engine can cause damage. If the engine has been running, allowit to cool for at least half an hour before washing.

6.1.3 FuelGasoline will oxidize and deteriorate in storage. Old gasoline will cause hard starting, and itleaves gum deposits that clog the fuel system. If the gasoline in your engine deteriorates duringstorage, you may need to have the carburetor and other fuel system components serviced orreplaced. The lengh of time that gasoline can be left in your fuel tank and carburetor without causingfunctional problems will vary with such factors as gasoline blend, your storage temperatrues, and whether the fuel tank is partially or completely filled. The air in a partially filled fuel tankpromotes fuel deterioration. Very warm storage temperatures accelerate fuel deterioration. Fueldeterioration problems may occur within a few months, or even less if the gasoline was not freshwhen you filled the fuel tank. The Distributor's Limited Warranty does not cover fuel system damage or engine performanceproblems resulting from neglected storage preparation. You can extend fuel storage life by adding a fuel stabilizer that is formulated for that purpose, oryou can avoid fuel deterioration problems by draining the fuel tank and carburetor.

N O T I C E!

Page 25: AHG190F

-21-

6.2 Adding a fuel stabilizer to extend fuel storage lifeWhen adding a fuel stabilizer, fill the fuel tank with fresh gasoline. If only partially filled, air in thetank will promote fuel deterioration during storage. If you keep a container of gasoline for refueling,be sure that it contains only fresh gasoline.1. Add fuel stabilizer following the manufacturer's instructions.2. After adding a fuel stabilizer, run the engine outdoors for 10 minutes to be sure that treatedgasoline has replaced the untreated gasoline in the carburetor.3. Stop the engine, and move the fuel valve lever to the OFF position.

6.3 Draining the fuel tank and carburetor1. Place an approved gasoline container below the carburetor, and use a funnel to avoid spillingfuel.2. Remove the carburetor drain bolt and sediment cup, then move the fuel valve lever to the ONposition.

Gasoline is highly flammable and explosive. You can be burned or seriously injured when handling fuel.Keep heat, sparks, and flame away.Handle fuel only outdoors.Wipe up spills immediately.

3. After all the fuel has drained into the container, reinstall the drain bolt and sediment cup.Tighten them securely.

-22-

6.4 Engine oil1. Change the engine oil2. Remove the spark plug.3. Pour a tablespoon (5-10 cc) of clean engine oil into the cylinder.4. Pull the starter rope several times to distribute the oil in the cylinder.5. Reinstall the spark pulg.6. Pull the starter rope slowly until resistance is felt. This will close the valves so moisturecannot enter the engine cylinder. Return the starter rope gently.

6.5 Storage PrecautionsIf your engine will be stored with gasoline in the fuel tank and carburetor, it is important toreduce the hazard of gasoline vapor ignition. Select a well ventilated storage area away fromany appliance that operates with a flame, such as furnace, water heater, or clothes dryer. Alsoavoid any area with a spark-producing electric motor, or where power tools are operated. If possible, avoid storage areas with high humidity, because that promotes rust and corrosion.Unless all fuel has been drained from the fuel tank, leave the fuel valve lever in the OFF positionto reduce the possibility of fuel leakage.Position the equipment so the engine is level. Tilting can cause fuel or oil leakage. With the engine and exhaust system cool, cover the engine to keep out dust. A lot engine andexhaust system can ignite or melt some materials. Do not use sheet plastic as a dust cover. Anonporous cover will trap moisture around the engine, promoting rust and corrosion. If equipped with a battery for an electric starter, recharge the battery once a month while theengine is in storage. This will help to extend the service life of the battery.

6.6 Removal from storageCheck your engine as described in the BEFORE OPERATION chapter of this manual. If the fuel was drained during storgae preparation, fill the tank with fresh gasoline. If you keep acontainer of gasoline for refueling, be sure that contains only fresh gasoline. Gasoline oxidizesand deteriorates over time, causing hard starting. If the cylinder was coated with oil during storage preparation, the engine may smoke briefly atstart up. This is normal.

6.7 TransportIf the engine has been running, allow it to cool for at least 15 minutes before loading the engine-powered equipment on the transport vehicle. A hot engine and exhaust system can burn youand can ignite some materials.Keep the engine level when transporting to reduce the possibility of fuel leakage. Move the fuelvalve lever to the OFF position.

Agency (EPA), together with AMICO INTERNATIONAL CORP., are pleased to explain the

Emission Control System Warranty on your new small off-road engine. New small off-road engines

must be designed, built and equipped to meet stringent anti-smog standards for the state of

California and the federal government. AMICO INTERNATIONAL CORP. warrant the emission

control system on your engine for the periods of time listed below provided there has been no

abuse, neglect, unapproved modification or improper maintenance of your engine.

Your emission control system may include parts such as the carburetor, ignition, intake and

exhaust systems. AMICO INTERNATIONAL CORP. will repair your engine at no cost to you for

diagnosis, replacement parts and labor, should a warrantable condition occur.

MANUFACTURER'S EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM WARRANTY COVERAGE:

Emission control systems on 1997 and later model year engines are warranted for two years

as hereinafter noted. If, during such warranty period, any emission-related component or system

on your engine is found to be defective in materials or workmanship, repairs or replacement

will be performed by your dealer.

PURCHASER'S/OWNER'S WARRANTY RESPONSIBILITIES:

As the small off-road engine purchaser/owner, you are responsible for the completion of all

required maintenance as listed in your factory supplied Owner's Manual. For warranty purposes,

AMICO INTERNATIONAL CORP. recommends that you retain all receipts covering maintenance

on your engine. However, AMICO INTERNATIONAL CORP. cannot deny warranty solely because

of the lack of receipts or for your failure to ensure the completion of all scheduled maintenance.

As the small off-road engine purchaser/owner, you should, however, be aware that AMICO

INTERNATIONAL CORP. may deny any and/or all warranty coverage or responsibility if your

engine, or a part/component thereof, has failed due to abuse, neglect, improper maintenance

or unapproved modifications, or the use of counterfeit and/or "grey market" parts not made,

supplied or approved by AMICO INTERNATIONAL CORP.You are responsible for presenting

your engine to your dealer as soon as a problem occurs. The warranty repairs should be completed

in a reasonable amount of time, not to exceed 30 days.

Warranty service can be arranged by contacting your dealer.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

This warranty statement explains your rights and obligations under the Emission Control System

Warranty (ECS Warranty), which is provided to you by AMICO INTERNATIONAL CORP. pursuant

to California and federal law. See also the "AMICO INTERNATIONAL CORP. Limited Warranties,"

which is enclosed herewith on a separate sheet, also provided to you by AMICO INTERNATIONAL

CORP. The ECS Warranty applies only to the emission control system of your new engine. If

there is any conflict in terms between the ECS Warranty and the AMICO INTERNATIONAL CORP.

Warranty, the ECS Warranty shall apply except in circumstances where the AMICO INTERNATIONAL

CORP. Warranty may provide a longer warranty period. Both the ECS Warranty and the AMICO

INTERNATIONAL CORP. Warranty describe important rights and obligations with respect to your

new engine.

Warranty service can be performed only by your dealer. When requesting warranty service,

evidence must be presented showing the date of the sale to the original purchaser/owner. The

purchaser/owner shall be responsible for any expenses or other charges incurred for service

calls and/or transportation of the product to/from the inspection or repair facilities. The

purchaser/owner shall also be responsible for any and/or all damages or losses incurred while

the engine is being transported/shipped for inspection or warranty repairs.

IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS REGARDING YOUR WARRANTY RIGHTS AND

RESPONSIBILITIES, YOU SHOULD CONTACT YOUR DEALER.

EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM WARRANTY

Emission Control System Warranty (ECS Warranty) for 1997 and later model engines:

(a) Applicability: This warranty shall apply to 1997 and later model year engines. The ECS Warranty

Period shall begin on the date the new engine or equipment is purchased by/delivered to its

original, end-use purchaser/owner and shall continue for 24 consecutive months thereafter.

(b) General Emissions Warranty Coverage: AMICO INTERNATIONAL CORP. warrants to the

original, end-use purchaser/owner of the new engine or equipment and to each subsequent

purchaser/owner that each of its engines is:

(1) Designed, built and equipped so as to conform with all applicable regulations adopted by

the EPA and CARB pursuant to their respective authority, and

Page 29: AHG190F

-25-

(2) Free from defects in materials and workmanship which, at any time during the ECS Warranty

Period, may cause a warranted emissions-related part to fail to be identical in all material respects

to the part as described in the engine manufacturer's application for certification.

(c)The ECS Warranty only pertains to emissions-related parts on your engine, as follows:

(1) Any warranted, emissions-related parts that are not scheduled for replacement as required

maintenance in the Owner's Manual shall be warranted for the ECS Warranty Period. If any such

part fails during the ECS Warranty Period, it shall be repaired or replaced by your dealer according

to Subsection (4) below. Any such part repaired or replaced under the ECS Warranty shall be

warranted for the remainder of the ECS Warranty Period.

(2) Any warranted, emissions-related part that is scheduled only for regular inspection as specified

in the Owner's Manual shall be warranted for the ECS Warranty Period. A statement in such

written instructions to the effect of "repair or replace as necessary" shall not reduce the ECS

Warranty Period. Any such part repaired or replaced under the ECS Warranty shall be warranted

for the remainder of the ECS Warranty Period.

(3) Any warranted, emissions-related part that is scheduled for replacement as required maintenance

in the Owner's Manual shall be warranted for the period of time prior to the first scheduled

replacement point for that part. If the part fails prior to the first scheduled replacement, the part

shall be repaired or replaced by your dealer according to Subsection (4) below. Any such emissions-

related part repaired or replaced under the ECS Warranty shall be warranted for the remainder

of the ECS Warranty Period prior to the first scheduled replacement point for such emissions-

related part.

(4) Repair or replacement of any warranted, emissions-related part under this ECS Warranty

shall be performed at no charge to the owner at your dealer.

(5) When the engine is inspected by your dealer, the owner shall not be held responsible for

diagnostic costs if the repair is deemed warrantable.

(6) AMICO INTERNATIONAL CORP. shall be liable for damages to other original engine components

or approved modifications proximately caused by a failure under warranty of any emission-related

part covered by the ECS Warranty.

(7) Throughout the ECS Warranty Period, AMICO INTERNATIONAL CORP. shall maintain a

supply of warranted emission-related parts sufficient to meet the expected demand for such

emission-related parts.

Page 30: AHG190F

(8) AMICO INTERNATIONAL CORP authorized and approved emission-related replacement part

may be used in the performance of any ECS Warranty maintenance or repairs and will be provided

without charge to the purchaser/owner. Such use shall not reduce AMICO INTERNATIONAL

CORP's ECS Warranty obligations.

(9) Unapproved, add-on, modified, counterfeit and/or "grey market" parts may not be used to

modify or repair a AMICO INTERNATIONAL CORP. engine. Such use voids this ECS Warranty

and shall be sufficient grounds for disallowing an ECS Warranty claim. AMICO INTERNATIONAL

CORP. shall not be held liable hereunder for failures of any warranted parts of a AMICO

INTERNATIONAL CORP. engine caused by the use of such an unapproved, add-on, modified,

counterfeit and/or "grey market" part.

10. TECHNICAL INFORMATION

Record the engine serial number in the space below. You will need this serial number whenordering parts, and when making technical or warranty inquiries.Engine serial number:10.1 Battery connections for electric starterUse a 12-volt battery with an ampere-hour rating of at least 18 Ah.Be careful not to connect the battery in reverse polarity, as this will short circuit the batterycharging system. Always connect the positive (+) battery cable, so your tools cannot cause ashort circuit if they touch a grounded part while tightening the positive (+) battery cable end.

N O T I C E!

A battery can explode if you do not follow the correct procedure, seriously injuning anyone nearby.Keep all sparks, open flames, and smoking materials away from the battery.

1. Connect the battery positive (+) cable to the starter solenoid terminal as shown.

2. Connect the battery negative (-) cable to an engine mounting bolt, frame bolt, or other good engine

ground connection.

3. Connect the batter positive (+) cable to the battery positive (+) terminal as shown.

5. Coat the terminals and calbe ends with grease.

10.2 Carburetor modification for hight altitude operation

and fuel consumption will increase. A very rich mixture will also foul the spark plug and cause hardstarting.

At high altitude, the standard carburetor air-fuel mixture will be too rich. Performance will decrease,

High altitude performance can be improved by specific modifications to the carburetor. If youalways operate your engine at altitudes above 6,000 feet (1,800 meters), have your servicingdealer perform this carburetor modification.Even with carburetor modification, engine horsepower will decrease about 3.5% for each 1,000-foot (300-meter) increase in altitude. The effect of altitude on horsepower will be greater thanthis if no carburetor modification is made.

N O T I C E!

at low altitudes, have your servicing dealer return the carburetor to original factory specifications.

When the carburetor has been modified for high altitude operation, the air-fuel mixture will betoo lean for low altitude use. Operation at altitudes below 6,000 feel (1,800 meters) with amodified carburetor may cause the engine to overheat and result in engine damage. For use
