What is God thinking when we willfully disobey? Does sin trigger a release of God's wrath or grace? These questions can evoke widely divergent answers. The disparity in responses might be a result of what we were taught about God, or our experiences with human authorities, or a combination of those and other factors. Aha MomentWhere is God when we sin? What is God thinking when we willfully disobey? Doessin trigger a release of God's wrath or grace? These questions can evoke widelydivergent answers. The disparity in responses might be a result of what we weretaught about God, or our experiences with human authorities, or a combination ofthose and other factors.

A simple definition of an "aha moment" is: a moment of sudden insight or discovery. Ihad one of those a couple of weeks ago as I read my Bible. Before I share my"aha," let me set the stage with the story of Moses and the 10 Commandments. Youwill need to read the following timeline of events to understand my "aha."

Moses climbed and descended Mount Sinai 3 times before God gave theIsraelites the 10 Commandments. (Exodus 19:3,8,20)

When God spoke the commandments, He did so to Moses and all of Israelwhile they were at the base of the mountain. (Ex 20:1-17)The Israelites were terrified and thought they would die if God spoke to themdirectly, so they begged Moses to not have God speak directly to them. (Ex20:18-19)In response to the people's fears, Moses ascended the mountain again andGod gave him a portion of the covenant law. Moses carefully wrote this alldown and announced it to the Israelites. They accepted the covenant andagreed to live according to what God had said. (Ex 20:21–24:8)Moses, his brother Aaron, his nephews Nadab and Abihu, and 70 of Israel'sleaders went a short way up onto the mountain and saw God and ate a meal inHis presence. Can you imagine the stories that those men had to tell theirfamilies in the years to come?! (Ex 24:9-14)Moses climbs Mount Sinai for the 5th time. He tells Aaron and the others to"stay put" until he returns and he leaves Aaron in charge. When he climbs themountain, it is engulfed in flames and billowing smoke...oh and there is also anearthquake happening at the time. Imagine something in between theColockum Fires and the eruption of Mount St. Helens! (Ex 24:14)Moses is on the mountain for 40 days and nights as God gives him thecovenant in greater detail. God also gives him the 10 Commandments writtenon 2 tablets of stone. (Ex 24:14–32:15)Sometime after Moses had ascended the mountain, the people (I'm assumingprimarily the leaders) approach Aaron. They may have thought Moses diedand they want to know what is next. At this point, Aaron instigates the creationof the golden calf idol and the extended worship festival of a "graven image."(Ex 32:1-6,19)

Ok, if you made it through that chronology of events, congratulations. Here is my"aha"...Aaron had agreed with all of Israel to obey the commands. He was put incharge and told to wait for Moses' return. While God was giving Moses an extensionof the covenant law, Aaron was leading Israel into sin and betrayal of the vow they'djust entered into. Part of the covenant law included the clothing the high priest was towear and the details of his dedication service. Aaron was Israel's first high priest! Andhere is the "aha"...God knew what Aaron was doing at the base of the mountain andHe still proceeded to lay out the details for the high priest.

God was present and aware when Aaron initiated this sin. Yes, there wereconsequences for his disobedience. Yes, there was grace and forgiveness thatallowed for his future. How we live matters. God doesn't want us to sin. If we sin, Heis faithful and just to forgive us if we will confess that sin.

Stay the course in your faith my dear friends, knowing that God loves you and willstrengthen you.
