DEFINITION ALVEOLECTOMY/ALVEOPLASTY

A surgical procedure performed to smooth or recontour the alveolar

bone, aiming to facilitate the healing procedures as well as the successful

placement of a future prosthetic restorations.

INDICATIONS

Where the ridge is of a relatively regular contour and adequate

height, but presents undercut on the depth of labial vestibule

because of the configurations of the alveolar ridge.

WHY EXOSTOSES SHOULD BE REMOVED?

To accommodate a lower or upper denture, the exostoses prevents the seating of denture and can cause irritation due to functional stresses upon denture.

TECHNIQUE Disinfection Protocols Local Anesthesia Incision along the alveolar ridge to

cut the interdental papillae of the gingiva, according to the exostoses regions.

Reflection and elevation of mucoperiosteal flap to expose the bone area to be recontoured

INCISION AND FLAP REFLECTION

TECHNIQUE Removal of the sharp bone edges with

rongeours.

TECHNIQUE Smoothing of bone with a bone file

TECHNIQUE Irrigating the operation site using saline

solutions. Closing and suturing the flap. The patient

is scheduled for follow up in 2 weeks post-operatively.
