Westside 4-H By: Austyn Smith
Westside 4-H’s busy season has started, and we have had quite a few things going on already.
Officer Retreat The Officer Retreat took place on August 25th and 26th. Officers chose a location, and went camping for the weekend. Activities that took place included team building skills, ice breakers, goal planning, leadership, and just having some fun. The officer team enjoyed an eventful evening with sitting around the campfire, telling funny and scary stories, making s’mores, and singing 4-H camp songs.
Officer Installation Westside 4-H’s last meeting took place on September 2, 2007 at the Gustine High School cafeteria. At this meeting officers were officially installed into their duties. Merced County All-Star Austyn Smith over-saw the ceremony, using a well known “candy bar” installation. All officers accepted their duties with enthusiasm. The 2007-2008 officer team is: President– Laken Leonard Vice President– Caitlyn Souza Treasurer– Mikayla Nacci Secretary-Ashley Souza Sgt. of Arms– Michael Nacci Reporter-Austyn Smith Communications-Trenton Cordeiro Historian-Breck Smith Web Site Coordinators-Emily Whiteaker & Tristen Ketcher
OLM Bullfights Westside 4-H participated in the OLM Bullfights on September 10, 2007. As our main fund-raiser each year, our club hosts a food booth at the bullfights. We served tri-tip, linguica, hot dogs, nachos, Portuguese beans, coffee, candies, etc. The club asks members to sign up to work a shift at the booth. This year we had enough help to fill every shift. Some kids even went into the stands and sold candy. The money we raise drives our club budget. We did well this year and are hopeful for a prosperous year!
Next Meeting Westside 4-H’s next meeting will be on Thursday, October 4, 2007 @ 7pm at Gustine High School where members will be wearing their favorite costumes for Halloween! Members who participate will receive an extra ticket for door prizes. A pumpkin decorating contest will take place with three categories to participate in are Scariest, Cutest and Most Creative. Prizes will be given for 1st place in each category.
Ballico-Cressey 4-H By: Spencer Downey
Besides exhibiting at State Fair, there are many other opportunities. For example, Junior Task Force. You must be at least 14 years old, submit an application and resuḿe by July 13 to the Fur and Feathers Superintendent. Once accepted you can help set up, paint, hang posters, make sure cages are in workable order, clean, etc. I was Task Force for Rabbits, Poultry, and Cavies. I checked feed and water, swept, gave daily demonstrations to the public, and assisted the Small Animal Superintendent with cooping in all the rabbits and birds that stayed.
I was invited to attend the UC Davis Vet School at State Fair. There, I participated in 3 different sessions. Session one was about lactation, session two was osteology and the third session was cardiology. I got to participate in many different things in these sessions such as esting milk with chemicals, putting together dog skeletons, viewing x-rays, viewing
plasticized hearts and dissecting goat hearts.
Another opportunity is the State 4-H Booth. I worked a 2 hour shift taking my 4-H posters and my cavy. I answered questions on 4-H, what it was about, different projects , and handed out information and goodies on 4-H.
Besides making new friends and sharing my knowledge, I gained experience and learned a lot from working there. I look forward to going back next year!
McSwain 4-H
Terra Bazan, a member of the McSwain 4-H club traveled this summer to Washington D.C. as the winner of the 18th District Congressional Art Competition. The Competition is open to all high school students residing in the 18th district with approval from their art teacher. Since photography is not offered as a class at the Terra’s high school she entered the contest as a representative of the McSwain 4-H photography project. Her winning submission was a photo entry entitled “Valley Vineyards”. Her photo will be on display for one year in the Cannon Hallway, a tunnel which connects the Congressional offices with the US Capital building.
While in Washington D.C. Terra attended a reception for the winners and was escorted on tours of the Capital building, Congressional offices and the Library of Congress by an Intern from Congressman Cardoza’s office. Although it was a busy schedule she also managed to find time to take pictures too!
