• Nursery plants (bushes, heather land plants, bamboos…) are the main horticultural pro-duction in Brittany representing 48% of the total horticultural surface area (outdoor and in greenhouses). Cut flowers account for 15% of the area, pots plants for 9% and flowerbeds for 7%.

Accounting for 21% of the surface area, bulb plants (tulip, hyacinth...) is mainly located in the West Finistère (La Torche) within a few specialised firms.

• Besides companies which sell their products by themselves, around fifty producers mar-ket their plants through 2 regional produ-cer organisations belonging to the Cerafel: Kerisnel, the horticultural branch of the Sica Saint-Pol (29) and Armor Végétal, a subsidy of the UCPT (22). The producer organisation Kerisnel increased its revenue by 4% in 2018, despite unfavourable weather conditions at spring time. Nursery plants represent 77% of the revenue of the ornamental branch, against 21% for flowered plants (-3%/2017) and 1% for the cut flowers (big decrease).

production of energy171

• Agriculture produces energy:- by methanisation: 237 MWh produced per

year.

- by solar photovoltaic panels: 149 MWh produced per year.

- by steam-and-electricity cogeneration: 535,000 MWh produced per year.

- by using or selling energy wood (shredded): Around 400 on-farm heating plants using 10,000 tons per year and outside greenhouse around 18,000 tons coming from the bocage and sold by local cooperatives such as SCIC.

• For example, the Guerlédan flood barrier produced 20,000 MWh per year. Energy saved by dairy farms in Brittany

Total number of equipments Total energy saved (kWh per year)

• Agriculture invests to save energy:- in energy renovation work on livestock buildings. 725 farms were supported by the aid from the PCAEA (scheme providing funding for projects which improve productivity in the farming) between 2015 and 2017 for energy renovation, mainly pig and poultry farms . The most relevant items are insulation and ventilation. They allow savings of 20 to 50% in energy consumption.

- to reduce the energy consumption of cattle farms, with the support of the Ecoenergielait scheme. This includes different pieces of equipment: pre-cooler, heat recovery device for the milk tank, solar heating system and heat pump. Since 2009, 2,376 pieces of equipement have been installed in livestock farming, 106 in 2018. In Brittany, they enabled to save 14.6 GWh per year.

• By comparison, 1 GWh corresponds to the annual electric consumption of 85 French households.
