Monte Vibiano: the green revolution

The farm surface is 500 hectars, located 27 km. out of PerugiaThe main products are: quality wine and extravirgin olive oil. From a conventional farm to a “0 greenhousegas emissions”

Monte Vibiano: how to improve quality by respecting environment

Wine and extra-virgin olive oil are the symbols of quality farming at Monte Vibiano:the 5 hectars vineyard produce grapes from Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Sirah, Sagrantino, Carmenere and Montepulciano located in a Colli Perugini ; the olive grove is constituted of more than 12.000 trees, all surrounded of woods and a magnificent rural landscape. The ancient village, existing since Etruscan period, includes a XIII century castle, available for conferences and meetings. Nature, farming fields and buildings were all so beautiful that Lorenzo Fasola Bologna thought it could be the ideal place for a green revolution.

Monte Vibiano: 360° Green Revolution project

360°Green Revolution, is the name of this farm project based on the idea to achieve 0 greenhouse gas from the whole farm production cycle. The project, realized by introducing innovative technologies, has been ISO 14064 approved by DNV international certification.The main technologies are:Photovoltaic panels, electric recharging station (Green Utility & Cellstrom), wood chips boiler (Biomass Research Centre Perugia)Biodiesel vehicles (Same, Deutz-Fahr), albedo paint (for silos)Installed electric power: 52,80 kW; yearly electric production: 62.300 kWhStarting date: October 2008Remarks: the 2nd (52,90 kW) plant is going to be realized in 2009

Agrigest: swine short supply chain

Existing since 1988, Agrigest is leader of a cooperative, La Torre, managing about 500 hectars in the municipalities of Amelia, Montecastrilli and Narni, province of Terni (Umbria), cultivated with barley,corn, sorghum for sheeps and swines (about 650 sows) feeding. In 1996 Roberto Parasecolo, the young promoter, agrees to participate with ARUSIA,regional agency for development and innovation in agriculture, to a project consisting in creating a swine genetic line from races suitable for traditional salted pork meat (ham, sausages, salami,..). The project envisages the use of excrements for a natural balanced fertilizer in a farm closed cycle.The pork meat, 80% of which before sent to factories, is 70% worked on butchery directly and by small clients interested in quality.Roberto Parasecolo has received for Agrigest project the Oscar Green Price 2009.

Agrigest: pork butchers’ tradition and innovation

The animal welfare is one of the strong points of Agrigest, with a specific focus on pigsty livehability and natural feeding, according to certificated production protocols, mostly provided from the fields of the cooperative, without adding flesh meal. Also very important is the environmental care, with a balanced use of dejections for fertilization.Food safety, quality and traditional processing are the basis of Agrigest meeting with butchers and consumers’ approval.Also growing is the sheep breeding with salted meat processing according to “kosher” methodology for export towards Jewish consumers. The marketing mix is in few words a very important added value for Agrigest commercial policy.

Agrigest: swine short supply chain, traceability certification

The SUINO UMBRIA® trade mark is based on a closed complete cycle of swine breeding and pork meat processing with traceability certificated by 3A-PTA of Umbria. The piglets born from sows of the cooperative are branded at loins and are followed on the basis of the production protocols up to the slaughtering. The product certification distinguishes and makes recognizable the fresh and salted pork meat from Agrigest. The swine supply chain is integrated with a farming supply chain named “Profumi e sapori di Sangemini” providing first quality cereals for animal feeding, with 2.000 tons stock capacity.

Masseria Salamina: agricultural and architectural heritage

The Masseria Salamina is far away only 5 chilometers from the sea, near Monopoli in Apulia. The main building is constituted of a 17th century fortified farmhouse at the centre of 200 hectars property where the olive trees were placed 400 years ago by Joseph Salamina. In the last century also orange and almond trees were planted. So the farm managed by the young owner Filippo De Miccolis Angelini, winner of an “Oscar Green 2009”, is a symbol of local history testified by an inestimable value made of agricultural and architectural heritage. Masseria Salamina farm products, such as the tasty extra-virgin olive oil, are a valuable example of the importance of biodiversity protection. In the same way, the environment with preservation and maintainance of olive, almond and orange groves are the extraordinary added value for agrotourism hospitality.

Masseria Salamina: rural hospitality in the middle of baroque age

The buildings create a very special atmospherefrom far-off ages, often overlapping. There is a church in form of Latin cross from which the masonry of the wings sticks out. Probably the church was restructured in the 1792 when it was enlarged on an earlier cult-building. Today, in the different wings of the “masseria”, there are three different kinds of lodgings, each one with a own architecture style in according to the original destination of the building. The young owner has been particularly engaged in restoring without making changes out of style or fake infrastructures.The swimming pool is the only work not respecting the ancient use of the land in the surrounding of the “masseria”, but the coherent restoration has allowed to recover a rare and complete example of XVII century farmhouse.

So gorgeous and misterious are the buildings so wide and solar are the open spaces, dominated by 400 years old olive trees. The old farmhouse park is a wonderful example of olive, almond, orange groves during five centuries of latifundism in South of Italy. It’s the evidence of a period when rich people owners of large plots of land were used to ride admiring their properties and controlling people working for them.

Panta Rei : sustainable development training and education centre

Once upon a time there were three abandoned stables…it could be the beginning of a fairy story. A group of young people, in contact with an historical group having founded in the surroundings “La Buona Terra”, the first organic school farm in Umbria in 1979, decided to restore, instead of destroying the 70’s buildings, by using ecologic materials and solar energy for heating. After 10 years collaboration the new cooperative and the old one members decided to merge their businesses in a whole new project for the future, by integrating old farmers’ knowledge and new “green” technologies. Sanni Mezzasoma is the young promoter of the new cooperative, named “Centro di esperienze per la formazione allo sviluppo sostenibile”.

Panta Rei :buildings made of ecologic materials

The buildings are made of natural materials, electric power is provided by solar and biomass energy. All the people staying for a while, both as a worker and a guest, are involved in all activities of the community, including energy management and rubbish collection and recycle. The training and education centre located on the hills surrounding the Lake Trasimeno, in the municipality of Passignano (PG), was planned to develop activities with students and other groups. It is constitute of three buildings, all of them built with ecologic materials: i) sleeping rooms zone, ii) laboratories area, kitchen and dining rooms, all communicating through passages and iii) guesthouse for young volunteers from all the world, learning by doing and collaborating within specific projects and activities.

Panta Rei : protection of Lake Trasimeno heritage

Students can participate in different seasons to collect olives and make by themselves own extra-virgin olive oil, make bread or cheese in a traditional way. Special guests of the education and training centre are old farmers used to tell their stories about the Lake Trasimeno. They are also the “seed savers” of the area and their local plants are both cultivated “on farm” and collected in the “Seed bank” of Lake Trasimeno, at Polvese Island and at University of Perugia, Department of Applied Biology. The old activities and traditions are also told and shown to the students and directly acted by them as an important memory of the Lake Trasimeno heritage.

Consorzio Terre Alte : mountain traditional products and landscapes

The Consortium “Terre Alte” was constituted the 3rd November 2003 by a group of agriculture and agrotourism enterpreneurs, at the end of an animation action promoted by the Agriculture Council of Lecco Province. One of the main objective is to create an integrated agriculture- tourism system to promote and exploit the peculiarities of agricultural products, landscape and food in Lecco area. Quality services and products are guaranteed to visitors and consumers on the base of production protocols and customer satisfaction, under control of third parties. Liliana Bergamini is the young President of the Consortium and owner of “Due Soli” farm, producing cheese from goat milk and managing an environmental education programme based on natural and human mountain heritage.

Consorzio Terrealte : protection of biodiversity

The trails and tourist services offered by the Consortium in a large area surrounding Lake of Lecco have been realized to give the visitors the opportunity to live original experiences by getting in direct contact with the territory, its history and natural beauties. The participating farmers are, at the same time, environmental keepers,naturalistic guides, food heritage dispensers, within an innovative approach strongly connected to the old roots. In this way the farmers can increase the value of their own activity as well as protect the biodiversity and the natural landscape.

Consorzio Terrealte : environmental education and training

The greater part of the farms are leaded by female entrepreneurs coming form different experiences. There are agronomists, architects, teachers, naturalists, all engaged in farm managing. Different competencies and same engagement have been the starting point for the environmental education and training programme of the Consortium. The guidelines of this activity are:• to make well-known and interesting the farming work to the young generations;• to bridge the experiences of the students at farm towards a direct relationship with animals and ground;• to let taste traditional food and inform on its history and importance for the territory.
