Who we are DYS Space Ltd (space*) was formed in June 2016 as a company limited by

guarantee. We established in order to fulfil the organisational vision:

“Unlocking potential with young people and their communities”.

We are a confident, enthusiastic, learning organisation and our staff

uphold our values at every opportunity.

These values are:

*INTEGRITY - Doing what’s right, even when no-one is watching

*RESPECT - Interacting with fairness, kindness and dignity

*DETERMINATION - We give people a second chance, and a third, fourth,

fifth...

*COLLABORATIVE - Doing great things together and with others

*ACCOUNTABLE - Managing risk, taking responsibility and being

accountable to each other and our stakeholders

*DYNAMIC - Creating fun and a little bit of weirdness

Where we are based We operate from 8 youth centres across Devon, and deliver our

alternative education service from a 9th (the MyPlace centre, Red Rock in

Dawlish). Youth centres are located in Barnstaple, Bideford, Exeter,

Exmouth, Newton Abbot, Okehampton, Tiverton & Totnes. We operate

mobile services in Cranbrook. We also deliver regular street based or

mobile provision in different communities as needs arise.

“I owe everything to space, without the support of the youth

workers I never would have done things I have done” SP, Bideford

What we do We provide a wide range of needs-led, professional services for 11-19 year olds across Devon (up to 25 for those with additional needs). Currently these are delivered through five service areas: Open Access Youth Work - Allowing young people be themselves and freely meet friends and get inspired to be the best they can be and access support when they need, on their terms. Targeted support - for individual young people who are experiencing complex challenges. We also deliver group sessions for young people who share protective characteristics. Alternative Education - Our Chances Education Support Service works with young people at risk of exclusion from mainstream and other schools. We provide behavioural support, stability for young people and their parents/carers, formal education and space to reflect and challenge. Community Support - We have dedicated community youth workers, who work in partnership with VOYC to support the wider voluntary and community youth sector across Devon Duke of Edinburgh Award - We work with those young people with protective characteristics and with open award groups, whose young people may experience barriers to being involved in the scheme through their mainstream school.

* to create

We are extremely proud of space* being created. Proud of the journey we have travelled from way before the company was established. Youth services across the country have been subject to relentless year on year cut backs. Young people are often seen as an ‘easy’ target for budgetary savings - it’s probably no coincidence that most of

them can’t or won’t vote. However, here in Devon, due to the mix of a dedicated and brave staff group, coupled with a determination by a local authority to retain a continuum of community based youth services, the opportunity to deliver differently was created.

Devon County Council (DCC) started a tender process to deliver the services outlined above. Space* submitted a bid to the competitive procurement process. We were successful with that bid and awarded the three year contract to deliver those services. That contract began on 01 Feb 2017.

In creating space* as a new organisation, the staff group were absolutely at the heart of all the key decisions. They made informed decisions on the legal form of the company and governance arrangements, creating the business plan, marketing & branding, naming the organisation, young people’s engagement and new policy development. Real co-production by progressive staff.

That journey has created a shift in morale. Everything hasn’t been and isn’t smooth at every turn. Yet by involving staff from all areas, roles and levels, by listening, and supporting each other up and down the organisation, the staff group now have the opportunity to innovate, apply their creativity and to forge new relationships in pursuit of our vision.

“The support we have received has been invaluable” Vol Sector partner

* to grow

We have grown the amount we deliver. Across our Centres over 2,500 different young people have been able to access our services at more than 2000 sessions. Planned, purposeful, needs-led work with young people from all walks of life.

Through our key partnership with VOYC our support to other community based youth organisations has grown. We have cut out duplication, merged our member lists, streamlined our grant making and co-located for improved communication. The result is that many thousands more young people have benefited from improved support, as have the adult volunteers who work tirelessly week in week out in those groups.

We have grown in influence. Since becoming independent, space* has developed its voice on regional, national and international stages and forums. We have been at the forefront of a Europe-wide research project on transformative evaluation - demonstrating the impact of open access youth work. The first ever international conference focussed exclusively on the impact of youth work will be held over 3 days in Plymouth during September 2018.

At the request of the Department of Culture Media and Sport, we recently hosted one of only three initial consultation events to gather the views of young people nationwide on new Government proposals for Social Action.

We have grown new partnerships. We have also revisited old partnerships. We pride ourselves on collaborative delivery to maximise outcomes for young people. Young Devon, the Children’s Society, Active Devon, VOYC and others are now co-located at our Centres. This has seen improved communication and cooperation between agencies. We have also worked closely and productively with Libraries Unlimited, DAISI, Dawlish Action for Youth, individual schools, Academy Trusts, health departments and numerous DCC departments during the year. We have grown our volunteer base of adults and young people, in doing so offering opportunities for those volunteers to develop new skills, grow in confidence and to share their knowledge with the young people and other staff they work alongside.

*to Inspire

Young people have been both inspired and inspiring throughout this year. Many young people also inspire other young people through their actions and words. Peer on peer learning is a powerful force.

Providing safe, warm, meeting places for free association. Reaching thousands of Devon’s young people. Delivering new experiences and exciting activities across Devon and beyond. Young people creating amazing music and art work. Successfully reintegrating young people to their schools. Championing LGBTQ young people. Making our Centres as accessible as possible, in every aspect of the word. Responding to tragedy. Targeted work with individuals and groups on self harm, parental issues, other relationships, anger, self esteem, wider health issues, safety - online and otherwise, substance misuse, independent living skills and more. Having a real voice on issues which affect them. Young people taking responsibility for the distribution of over £100,000 in grants to other young people.

We have appointed our first young youth work apprentice - and there will be more apprentices.

“Your team and the Youth Workers are clearly highly skilled in many ways but particularly in identifying risk relating to CSE and young peoples vulnerabilities. It’s fantastic for me to have such an amazing and professional team to work with and I look forward to continuing our relationship” PC Rachel Crofts, Youth Intervention Officer

To have travelled this journey without our incredible staff group would have been impossible. Professional, dedicated, caring, risk taking, determined, creative, brave are just some of the ways of describing our staff. Youth workers facing and overcoming challenges to create new opportunities for thousands of young people and their communities. Day in, day out, evening after evening, at weekends, often when other services aren’t available, our youth workers go the extra mile.

And our support staff who keep our Centres functioning, safe and welcoming. Taking on tasks that really can’t be found in their job descriptions. Working behind the scenes to enable that front line delivery to be as good as it can be. A leadership team who have all learnt new roles, new ways. Resolute in their determination to ensure the continuation of high quality, meaningful services for young people across Devon through a challenging, fast changing landscape. Trustees giving their time and endless expertise to help shape, stabilise, instill confidence and challenge.

Space* can continue to be bold, enthusiastic and confident moving into our second year of delivering to and with, young people and their communities.
