Sources  of  Uncertainty  &  Risk?

• Competition  Calendar  &  Opponents• Job  security  (minimum  viable  product)• Biological  variations  (individual)• Weather• Finance• Too  much  information  (Paralysis  by  analysis)• Mental  biases  (over  planning)• Injuries• Much,  much  more

“Waterfall”  planning

Problems  with  “Waterfall”

• Uncertainty  highest  at  the  beginning  of  the  project• Over  planning• False  sense  of  security• Not  really  good  with  unknown  problems  and  unknown  solutions• Useful  in  more  “certain”  fields• Is  sport  such  a  field?

Page 5: Agile&Planning&in&Sports& Training...Applications&to&Sports&Planning? • “Waterfall”)still)needed,but)not)enough • NOTHING)NEW: • Vertical)Integration • Tschiene model •

Solutions?

• “Iterative”  approaches  to  planning• Agile  approach• MVP  – most  viable  product• Avoid  over-‐planning  since  we  don’t  have  the  information  at  the  start• Action  based• Processes  “embedded”• Take  uncertainty  into  account

Applications  to  Sports  Planning?

• “Waterfall”  still  needed,  but  not  enough• NOTHING  NEW:

• Vertical  Integration• Tschienemodel• Tactical  periodization• “Micro  dictates  Macro”  – Stuart  McMillan• Everything  is  done,  only  the  volume  varies

• Embedded  testing  and  planning• Variability  without  variability• Blocks  more  similar  than  different

• In-‐season  vs  pre-‐season)• Easier  re-‐introduction  of  injured  players• Easier  coordination  between  starting  players  and  reserves

Continued

• Dan  Baker  Wave• Dan  Pfaff  3  day  roll-‐over  plan• Jim  Wendler 5/3/1• Charlie  Francis• John  Kiely• Raymond  Verheijen• Complex-‐Parallel  approach

Standardized  work?  Continued

• Principle/Philosophy  based  =  Standardize  work• PDAC  Cycle  =  Experiment• Standardized  work  =  CHECKLIST  (basics)• Standardize  work  =  Team  practices  (complement)

Strength  Training

• DUP  (Daily  Undulating  Periodization/Planning)• Avoid  “downside”  (i.e.  soreness)• Maintain  volume/intensity• Make  things  “variable”  (rotate  exercises  – introduce  them  early)
