AGED originally started life as a vehicle for angry rants but has evolved into a more general zine, featuring designers, film reviews, rants and personal columns. Think of it as a Perzine meets Dezine.

AGED - #1

Welcome to the first issue of AGED, this zine/mini magazine has been a long time coming. For the past 2 months I have planned over and over again how I want this to look and feel.AGED initially started life as a zine where I would put all the stuff I could not say on my blog because I do not like to swear online. However this rant of a zine became to bore me. As a result this issue now focuses around my passion for design as well as movies and any other item I can think of while writing.

Ok first things first I guess I should explain the front cover... Well it is I and while out for my girlfriends birthday I had a spot of pole dancing... End.Secondly I would like to take this moment to thank the guys over at Pornography For Cowards for all the advice and amazing zines I have read from them.Third and formost. My name is Aaron Rackley... and all these written articles are by myself.

So thank you for buying this zine and keeping me from going hungry. Now start reading… Expect bigger issues to come...

Inside This Issue...ART, BOOKS, MOVIES, STORY, THE MONHTLY RANT and WHATS NEXT

and LOTS OF INSPIRATION . A Showcase of my favourite designers.

The Welcome Thingy...

Sitting with my gf the other day we were discussing usual amounts of different random articles of crap and generally debating each other until one of us gives in. This is a good part to a healthy relationship. Argue over stupid things then

you will not find a need to argue about anything else.

Anyway sliding of track a little. I want to talk about The Gent. I wish i were born in a time when a gentleman was not just a nice guy but the name had a meaning, a hidden mystery.

A gent would leave from his home and sneak down to his local gentleman club. This was a secret place where you had to be a member to get just through the door. Once in there would be billiard rooms, bars and library. Anything a gent would need to escape from the hectic life he would have during his

working day.

A gent would site with his broadsheet with a pipe in one hand and a rum or whiskey in the other. The man servant (now called a butler) would simply walk around the club all day

taking what ever orders the men would throw at them.

A Place to get away and be a man but not a modern class or barbaric man. A Gent. A man who has purpose and meaning but

just wants a break.

Can this dream ever be relived for me … Time will tell …

A MODERN GENT

Warning. Smoking can kill

My First Cigar...My first experience came as a shock. I am not a smoker and have small hatred to those who do. Being Asthmatic means that cigarette smoke makes me choke and un-able to breathe.

The Day was an exciting afternoon of very old school sports day games. You know likes of egg and spoon and the sack race. This was a sports day for my old employment (Odeon Cinema).

After various tests and races our team finally came on top and won. Our prize a small medallion and a bottle of champagne, which I am sure, tasted nice but one of our team ran off home with it.

I did however manage to find myself outside with the smokers with a cigar in my hand. Now the alcohol during the evening had been flowing nicely and by this point I was defiantly a little bit drunk, and found myself with a long walk home in a small rain spot.

I finally opened up the cigar thinking this will be a nice way to keep me warm on the walk back. But Hold It. I do not smoke so I have no cutter or lighter, what to do?

A friend saw me struggling so he came over took the cigar from me bit the end off in one bite and light it with his lighter. The next thing I know I am walking home with cigar in one hand at midnight in shorts and vest and a medallion round my neck. Anyone see a Jimmy Savile Reference here.

\ STORY

The outcome of the cigar was a lovely taste and a nice little merry walk home but then the inability to sleep . . .

\ THE MONTHLY RANTEpsom. Jobless TownI currently live in Epsom; this is where my university is. Otherwise I would not live here at all. Epsom is famed for its Derby Day (Horse Racing) but apart from that it seems to be a town where you are either a student fighting for a career in boredom, or you are a pensioner waiting for death to come knocking.

You see I am all up for just living peacefully. I would be contempt with just a farm, a sexy women and a selection of animals for various meals.

But I cannot live in a town where I cannot even hand out a CV. This simple act of trying to find a job by giving companies a piece of paper filled with mainly over exaggerated lies to obtain employment is even above Epsom.

It seems that the only way you can get a job these days is to apply online, which would be fine if Epsom even had jobs to find. In a town filled with Thousands of students there just seems to be no Jobs. Their is a light in the form of the next town over ‘Kingston’ this is a big town with hundreds of shops. The only problem is now finding £4.00 to get there to find one . . .

Sleeping is a hobby of mine...

Shadow Catchers: Camera-less PhotographyBeing a lover of art my whole life has led me into a lot of lovely gallery’s and amazing exhibitions. I will get a train ticket and just head to London and browse as many different places as I can looking for inspiration for projects I am currently working on. On one such trip I recently took I visited the V&A with one exhibition in mind. I had recently read about these 5 artists who had a show on called Shadow Catchers: Camera-less Photography The idea behind their work is simple and elegant, the art of taking photos without the use of a camera at any time in their process.

The artists use 6 different techniques to obtain their images. Chemigram, Digital C-Print, Dye Deconstruction print, Gealtin-silver print, Luminogram and Photogram. I could sit here and tell you about all these style individually however I simply do not have the room to do this with justice it truly deserves. Instead I will talk about two pieces that really caught my eye while walking around the exhibition.

Pierre Cordier, was born in Brussels in 1933. Pierre uses the technique of Chemigram. He has replaced the basic need of paper in art with that of photographic paper. He will then use photographic developer to create dark parts of the image and fixer for light. The technique is a very complicated and can take a long time to master. So to see in all its glory at half a meter squared the image of a maze with all its integrating lines and patterns just takes your mind to loads of new plains and you find yourself staring for a long time before moving on

\ ART REVIEW

to the next artist in the show called Garry Fabian Miller who breaks you into a new sense of being with his images of leaves and decaying over time pieces.

Your eyes while walking around this show never know where to look left, there is so many approaches to the same idea that you leave wanting to just go out and try it yourself.

Before you leave the show you have to walk past one more artists called Adam Fuss who was born in London in 1961. Adam likes to deal with what he calls as the unseen in his work and at the show there were some pieces from his collection called My Ghost. Now in my life I have not actually come across a piece of work that has sent shivers down my spine until I came across one which was a capture of some smoke which eerily looked like a women’s shadow trying to escape and fly upwards out of the smoke. Then you look to the left at the place card on the wall and read about the image.

Page 8: Aged #1

One line then takes your breath away ‘Taken from the chimneystack of a crematorium’. Did you just feel the shivers go all the way down your back, now you cannot help but look at this piece from another prospective? Has Adam actually managed to capture the moment of a person’s being leaving and going onto another life.

You finally leave the show wondering on so many levels of how stuff was made, how I can make some myself and my favourite. Am I missing a lot of stuff around me just because at my normal view I cannot see what is truly there?

Take a look at the image of the smoke below and then visit the show yourself.

The Unilever Series: Ai WeiweiA room full of seeds, how interesting could it be?Surprisingly I was amazed at my reaction to the exhibition. Their before me was millions of hand painted porcelain sunflower seeds. The first thing I found myself doing is reaching over the barrier to grab a handful of the seeds and have a feel while pocketing a few to take home with me. I then took a step back and took in the vastness of the space and how the seeds just filled every gap as far as I could see. The seeds are said to represent the masses of people in every day life and each seed is one person lost in a crowd. To me this can easily be seen. The longer you stare into the seeds the more and more you get lost into the mass and evidently you start to understand what the artist wanted you to see.

This is a free show and is currently at the Turbine Hall in the Tate.

\ REVIEWED IN 50 WORDS OR LESSTron LegacyVisually stunning, beautifully intoxicating. This classic follow on from the original will bring a tear to any geek as he wishes he were on the grid. The sound track is now on repeat as Daft Punk does not disappoint and did I mention Olivia Wilde in leather.

Cross Fire - James PattersonAlex Cross, mad gunmen killing rich men in Washington, an old foe come back to haunt Alex. Oh and a wedding. This book has a plot where you are edged along the story with your bum on the edge of your seat. You will not be able to put this book down.

Social NetworkThe age of a geek is upon us and this film reflects the choices made that turn an average guy in love until a multi billionaire. The acting is strong with a good cast all playing unlikeable characters. Well worth a moment of your time.
