Plan of Action

• Throughout several meetings, a plan of

action began to form to examine the

existing services, building design, and

programs offered at Riverwood Square.

• Age-Friendly Template (World Health

Organization) was provided to

committee

• Committee adapted the survey to fit

community

Riverwood Age-Friendly

Survey & Consultation

• Promoted the event through posters, daily

announcements, & invitations to the whole

community at Riverwood Square.

• In February, successfully had 44 residents

attend, learned more about Age-Friendly,

video, “Creating Communities Committed

to Healthy, Active Aging” and together,

completed the survey.

40

Page 41: Age-Friendly Manitoba Initiative Age-Friendly Organizations.pdf · Manitoba’s Aging Population: A Demographic Snapshot • In 2013, a total of 184,444 (14%) of Manitobans were aged

Survey Results

• Results reflected initial conversations with the

Age Friendly Committee

• Shows that committee members were a good

representation of our community at large and

that conversations amongst committee

members and other residents were taking

place.

41

Page 42: Age-Friendly Manitoba Initiative Age-Friendly Organizations.pdf · Manitoba’s Aging Population: A Demographic Snapshot • In 2013, a total of 184,444 (14%) of Manitobans were aged

Survey Results

• Overall extremely

positive response:

on the right track

with much of what

we provide within

the building already.

• High scores on

Housing Options,

Suite Services,

Respect and Social

Inclusion, and Social

Participation.

One of our highest scoring components “Residents

are treated with Respect.” 31 out of 44 responses

selected “Excellent”!!!.

Areas for Improvement

• Some areas were already in the midst of being

remedied, such as installing automatic door

openers, and better signage to identify restroom

areas.

• The domain needing most attention was

Support and Health Services: some residents

were unsure of services available through

Riverwood Square, and within the neighbouring

community, and how to obtain them.

43

Page 44: Age-Friendly Manitoba Initiative Age-Friendly Organizations.pdf · Manitoba’s Aging Population: A Demographic Snapshot • In 2013, a total of 184,444 (14%) of Manitobans were aged

Riverwood Successes

• Survey was a success

because of the residents on

the committee who shared

their thoughts, time and helped

educate their peers on the

topic.

• It allowed for transparency

between staff and residents,

improved communication, &

positive and meaningful

conversations.

• reaffirmed the connection we

have with our residents: many

improvements were already

underway

44

Page 45: Age-Friendly Manitoba Initiative Age-Friendly Organizations.pdf · Manitoba’s Aging Population: A Demographic Snapshot • In 2013, a total of 184,444 (14%) of Manitobans were aged

Riverwood Going Forward

• As education and communication about the health

services available was a topic of utmost importance,

we are in the process of creating an action plan to

address this specific issue.

– Once a month, hold a health info session for

residents to attend

– Use our monthly newsletter as a means of

conveying new and important health and wellness

information

– Keep families and residents informed through

monthly email updates

– Distribute literature to residents individually so

they have written information at their fingertips.

Conclusion

• Riverwood is proud to have been the vessel

for the Age Friendly pilot project. It has

given us further understanding of just how

important aging in place is for our seniors

and what it means to create this

environment fully.

• We recognize that Age Friendly is an

ongoing process that we will annually

reassess.
