HOME GROWN ( NON FOREST AREA) AGAR WOOD TREES IN NORTH-EAST INDIA

Flowers of Aquilaria Seeds produced by Aquilaria Leaves of Aquilaria

Agarwood (Aquilaria malaccensis Lam.) Family: Thymelaeaceae.

Agar wood (Aquilaria malaccensis syn) A. agallocha belongs to the family Thymelaeaceae. It is a medium to large evergreen tree growing up to 40 m tall and 1.5-2.5 m in diameter, found typically in mixed forest habitat at altitudes between 0 and 1000 m above sea level. In NE region another species is found whose population is very few largely in high altitude and commercially has not gained importance i.e., Aquilaria khasiana. A. malaccensis and other species in the genus Aquilaria produce resin-impregnated heartwood that is fragrant and highly valuable. Agarwood tree does not possess any oil glands / cells. When it becomes infected by some specific fungi it produces essential oil. This infection occurs due to various pathways. In nature the tree gets infested by one kind of stem borer (Zeuzera conferta) that create zigzag tunnels inside the tree which ultimately followed by fungal invasions. Interestingly the infestation by beneficial fungi no decay occurs. In nature hardly 25-30% trees get infested and transform harvestable that calls for manipulations.

The Agarwood (infected wood) and its essential oil are regarded as the divine gift of nature of the wonder tree, Agarwood tree (Aquilaria malaccensis), the pride of northeast India due to agro-climatic condition of the region and the abundance of the species A. malaccensis. Among several species being exploited, Aquilaria malaccensis is available in the NE India and is considered in commerce as a producer of best quality product in the world. Both the products (Essential oil and Agarwood chips used as incense) of this tree are considered as the costliest products of commerce with application in perfumery, Cosmetic and healthcare. Its value has become threat to the species. Therefore, some serious efforts in the region are urgently required for increasing production of these quality products which will contribute immensely to the economic upliftment of the

people of this region besides its conservation and maintenance of the heritage of NE India. Today, the demand for agarwood far exceeds supply. A recent study revealed that supply rates are only about 40% of the demand.

With the fast changing world scenario in regard to natural products, we can accept a challenge in taking a leading role in global market on this particular item. Considering its cultural and economic values, this wonder species of wild habitat is being domesticated and recognized as a cultivated species. As a plantation crop, it can play an important role in our region's economy by earning valuable foreign exchange providing direct and indirect employment to many people besides conservation of this precious plant resource.

Despite the above facts, this invaluable plant wealth left unattended to the hands of a few business groups, which pushed the plant species to the status of critically endangered once abundantly found almost everywhere in the flood free regions particularly in the foot hill and sub-hilly conditions of the region. Professional regeneration and development of a species should always follow its economic exploitation. But in the case of this species it remained exposed to the exploitative trading ignoring its developmental approaches. As a result of this negligence and also over exploitation, its natural population started eroding rapidly.

The abundance of Agar trees in Northeast, the trade of Agarwood has become a fascinating industry in this area. Naharoni, Golaghat in upper Assam and Hojai situated in Central Assam are the trade centre for agar industry. Due to high return in trade the trees are planted outside the forest area. Since, people are not being fully aware about the formation of agar in tree (infection artificially induced) they are not been able to convert all the trees economically harvestable. Therefore, there is a need to identify the elite strains and mass multiplication keeping the genetic traits for commercial cultivation. Now MJI Group R & D has invented an organic fungus and latest technology for non infected Agar tree which will be infected by inoculation

CURRENT CONDITIONS:

Assam is called the Home of the finest quality of Agar. The climate and the landscape of Assam are best suited for the Agar tree plantation. At present, in NE India 100% of raw materials supply to the distillers and processors are coming from private plantations mostly from homestead planting. Of late, organized commercial plantations have ensured better supply of the raw materials. Thus, Assam remains one of the leading producers of Agar wood and Agar wood products. There is a high demand of Agar wood of Assam in the markets of the South East Asia, Middle East and Japan because of its best quality aroma

SCIENTIFIC INOCULATION OF AGAR WOOD (AQUILARIA) TREE (NON INFECTED)

MJI GROUP RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT of Agar wood Aquilaria tree would like to present a brief of our new and wide project of Research and Development of Agar wood (Aquilaria) tree scientific inoculation. We are very happy and glad to announce that we have, successfully, invented an organic fungus of Agar wood tree and new technology

The recent planting boom is a response to the increased rarity in natural forests and increasing international prices of Agar wood.

SASHI VEKUR ( AGAR WOOD

Page 4: Agar Wood Revised Also for PDF 26-8-18 · in high altitude and commercially has not gained importance i.e., Aquilaria khasiana. A. malaccensis and other species in the genus Aquilaria

named SASHI VEKUR (Agar wood Fungus). We have, successfully, inoculated various non infected Agar wood trees and it's getting infected by the fungus gradually. It will be fully infected and become harder and darker within two years from the day of inoculation. Producing Agar wood begins with the Aquilaria tree being infected by inoculation with an organic Agar wood fungus. On infection the tree activates its special defence mechanism to fend off the pathogens. The infected trees secrete a fragrant, protective oil into wounded areas (roots, branches or sections of the trunk), which gradually become harder and darker. The Agarwood (black resinous wood) is the most exalted perfumery raw materials obtained from the infected wood of this Aquilaria tree. Now at the moment our indigenous farmers are selling the non infected Agar wood trees (Boya tree) @ Rs 4 (only four rupees.) per kg. After Inoculation of the non infected trees, they will be infected within 2-3 years and will be of high value @ Rs. 500 to 1000 per kg. Immediately after getting fungal infected, it will transform into a high value product in the market.

There are 80 % non infected Agar wood trees available in the patta land of Assam and North East India. But our indigenous farmers are not getting anything from harvesting the non-infected more than 25 years above Agar trees (Boya tree). There are about 100 lacs non-infected Agar wood Aquilaria tree (Boya Tree) in the Upper Assam, Dima Hasao, Barak valley and Lower Assam & Arunachal Pradesh. Hence, if we do the inoculation extensively, our farmers will be benefited from the infected trees financially and thus our state economy will grow up. We have been doing inoculation of Agar wood Aquilaria trees since 2012 and now we are getting excellent results from our own invented SASHI VEKUR ORGANIC (

TECHNICAL REPORT ON GAS CHROMATOGRAPHY–MASS SPECTROMETRY GC-MS) ANALYSIS OF AGARWOOD OIL We have distilled and processed the 3 months 22 days Inoculated Agar trees and have got the TECHNICAL REPORT ON GAS CHROMATOGRAPHY–MASS SPECTROMETRY (GC-MS) ANALYSIS OF AGARWOOD OIL. Seven major compounds along with numerous minor compounds were found in the Samples of Agar wood essential oil. The qualitative and quantitative GC-MS analysis of three months twenty two days old artificially infected Agar wood essential oil represented their fantastic aroma although having different composition. The artificial infected Agar wood oils matched to the standard of oils reported by many researchers. Therefore, the oils can be suitably utilized in various industries.

We have also distilled and processed 9 (nine) months old Inoculated Agar trees and have got fantastic sweet aroma oil which has a lasting fragrance. According to results of the said analysis, the Artificial Agar Oil is better than thirty years old naturally infected Agar tree distilled Agar oil.

We have also distilled and processed 14 (forteen) months old Inoculated Agar trees and have got fantastic sweet aroma oil which has a lasting fragrance. According to results of the said analysis, the Artificial Agar Oil is better than thirty years old naturally infected Agar tree distilled Agar oil.

We have been doing Research and Development of the new technology of the Agar wood Aquilaria tree inoculation by SASHI VEKUR ORGANIC

since 2012 and by the grace of God, finally, we have invented the actual organic fungus of Agar wood Aquilaria tree and it's getting fungal infection in the non infected Agar wood tree.

REGULARIZATION OF AGAR WOOD CUTTING AND TRADING :

Our Hon'ble Chief Minister has taken strong initiatives to regularize the Agar wood business of Patta land (own land) owner poor and indigenous farmers and traders of Assam. As a result, the Forest Department, Government of Assam had issued a 16 page letter No – 1106 on 31st October 2017, to all concerned DFO Assam, simplified procedure to acquire tree felling permission under Assam (Control of felling and removal of trees from non-forest land) Rules, 2002 and provisions prescribed thereof.

All Private patta/ revenue land (Non-forest ) agar wood farmers can cut the tree with prior permission from the DFO. Now Agar wood farmers and traders would cut the Agar tree and transport and trade the agar with the proper documentation. Our traders would export the Agar chips with Legal Procurement Certificate( LPC) which would be issued by the local DFO.

DISPLAY AND PROMOTION OF AGARWOOD IN GLOBAL INVESTORS' SUMMIT (GIS) RD TH“ADVANTAGE ASSAM” ON THE 3 AND 4 OF FEBRUARY, 2018 AT SARUSAJAI,

GUWAHATI

For the first time in the history of Assam Agar, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, the Hon'ble Chief Minister has taken strong initiatives to display and promote the Agar in Global

rd thInvestors' Summit which was held in Sarusajai, Guwahati on 3 and 4 February 2018. The Global Investors' Summit was inaugurated by Shri Narendra Modi, the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India. There was a vast response from investors and promoters from India and abroad. After the Global Investors' Summit all the agar farmers and traders have realised the value and importance of agar wood. Now, most tea garden owners are interested in planting agar trees in the tea garden as shade tree and they have already started the plantations of Agar trees. Our poor and indigenous farmers are looted by some illegal agar traders since 70 years. Now we are organising awareness campaigns for our farmers and traders about the

actual price and importance of Agar wood in the world. Our Agar wood is a high value product in the world among the elites because of best fragrance and sweet aroma. That is why North-east Agar is of high demand in the world market. Every day illegal traders and smugglers are sending the products abroad in a huge quantity. Because of this, the Government is losing revenues worth more than 1000 Crore Rupees every year.

The demand for Agarwood is constantly increasing in the international market.

And it's an opportunity to earn a high income by growing these Agarwood-producing trees. By doing so, you are guaranteed to make 100-fold profit on your initial investment within a short time span of just 10 years.

The guaranteed minimum repurchase price of a single tree with good production of Agarwood is INR 50,000/- after 10 years considering full growth. If the investment is over 400 trees, company can provide plantation management, technical advice and other special benefits (Technical and other services will include separate costs)

THE FUTURE

Agar wood, Oil and perfumes are in high demand in the international markets. It has a great future in business. Perfumes and Customs in perfumes manufacturing have changed little over the centuries except in the range of fragrances offered. In ancient times, only naturally fragrant resins or woods like sandalwood and patchouli were used for incense. Modern fragrance production allows virtually any scent to be duplicated, and fragrances are available now that couldn't be offered before. Examples include green tea, candy cane, blueberry, pumpkin pie, and gingerbread incense. The custom of use of perfumes is also likely to change in the future and in Western culture. In the Arab world and United States, users of perfumes may only use frequently. Perfumes -makers hope the variety, effectiveness, and low cost of fragrance will make them more popular than air fresheners and room deodorizers made with artificial perfumes. Also, the popularity of meditation and aromatherapy have spurred perfumes sales among clients who want their rare moments of quiet and relaxation to be healing and beautifully scented.

REFILL / RE CULTIVATION OF AGAR WOOD TREE IN NON-FOREST AREA:

This project plans to refill or re-cultivate the Agar wood tree in non-forest Area (Patta land) with minimum 100,000(hundred thousand trees) yearly. So we can expect to yield productive agaru of 85,000 trees at least (by artificial insemination if required) @ average 85% rate of success. To get higher harvestable wood from each tree either agar wood or agar oil, it is desirable to induce stress (nutrients/water/injuries) to the tree after

20

Page 22: Agar Wood Revised Also for PDF 26-8-18 · in high altitude and commercially has not gained importance i.e., Aquilaria khasiana. A. malaccensis and other species in the genus Aquilaria

8 to 10 years of growth or even early. This is the advanced stage of oil formation. More the time the tree gets infection after inoculation more will be the yield of good quality agar wood. A profitable plantation may be of 8 years cycle for inoculation and after 2 years, it can be harvested. So we should plant 100 times more than requirement to ensure good quality Agar wood trees from the project conceived thus turning a profitable green economy. In Golaghat district alone there are more than approx. 35, 00,000 trees in non- forest Area (patta land). Same quantity is also available in Jorhat, Sibsagar, Dibrugarh and other districts of Assam. So, proper and judicious harvesting of Agar trees with regeneration policy rigidly followed will ensure proper environmental balance and green economy.

AGAR WOOD PROJECT IN ARUNACHAL PRADESH

22

Arunachal, the land of the rising sun, with its snow clad peaks, towering mountains, roaring rivers, high altitude meadows and vast unspoiled sub-tropical forests, is aptly known as the 'Last Shangri La on Earth.' The raw, rugged beauty of Arunachal Pradesh leaves a lasting impression on its visitors.

The wild forests used to teem with a dazzling array of agarwood trees in the recent past, are a testament to the genius of Mother Nature. Alas! This natural flora fell a prey to some unscrupulous traders who had evicted this species from the wild forests. Now agarwood trees are widely cultivated by the farmers even at the threshold of their houses and has emerged as one of the major agricultural products bringing a boom in the economy of the people.

According to ancient mythology, Agar is known as the wood of the Gods. Since those days, Agar has been a harbinger in bringing financial benefits to all and sundry. The magical fragrance creates a magical effect upon the minds of the people when the chips are burned to purify the air.

The Siang Valley has left no stone unturned in going a step further and thus, took a plunge in this precious industry of Agar. The Hon'ble Chief Minister of Arunachal

st Pradesh has invited me to ITANAGAR on the 31 of July, 2018 to discuss about the Agar wood business and plantation in Arunachal Pradesh. Before meeting with the Hon'ble Chief Minister, I have met Mr Tapir Gao Ex Member of Parliament( Lok Shaba) from Arunachal Pradesh at the Guwahati Airport. He appreciated my advice and proposed for development of Arunachal Pradesh through Agar wood plantation and trade. Soon after, he acted prompt and invited me to his state. Henceforth, Mr Gao arranged a meet with the Hon'ble Chief Minister, Hon'ble Deputy Chief Minister and Hon'ble Industry Minister of Arunachal Pradesh which was a successful one. After the meet with the Hon'ble Chief Minister, I paid a visit to Itanagar, Ruksin, Roing, Tezu, Namsai, Dainig etc and met the farmers creating awareness about Agar wood trees, imparting knowledge about the value of agar and its importance, the benefits of plantation, inoculation, harvesting and marketing of agar wood. Successful campaigning of the awareness program of agar wood amongst the farmers in Arunachal Pradesh during 2018 resulted into plantation of more than 2, 00,000 agar plants by the farmers. Another milestone achieved in this field is that more than 5, 00,000 matured agar plants of approximately 10 to 50 years old and are

AGAR WOOD PROJECT IN MANIPUR

24

Manipur has been known through the ancient and medieval times through Meetei manuscripts as one of the richest intellectual heritage in Southeast Asia, with roots equidistant from the Indus Valley Civilization in the west and the Hango Ho Civilization to the far-east – the account of its land, people and civilization stretching two millennia. At the crossroads of Asian economic and cultural exchange Manipur has long connected the Indian subcontinent to Asia enabling migration of people and religions. There is great cultural diversity where various ethnicities have coexisted since ages. The oval-shaped state has an exotic landscape with gentle blue hills, lush valleys, lakes, plentiful rivers and deep forests. Literally meaning the 'land of jewel', nature has been kind in her beauty here. In the large freshwater Loktak Lake, we can see midst the labyrinthine of boat routes and colorful water plants, small islands that are rich floating biomass on which lake-dwellers live in homes. The Loktak landscape is also the only floating national park of the world, known dearly for Sangai deer which are endemic here. While on the other side on Manipur is Dzukou, a rolling valley covered with an immaculate bamboo forest.CM LAUNCHES AGAR WOOD PLANTATION PROJECT : In Manipur during 2018 more than 3,00,000 agar plantation have done by the farmers. And The Hon'ble CM of Manipur has taken vast initiatives for plantation of Agar wood and he has inaugurated the planting of Agar wood plantation on June 2018. With the aim of maintaining ecological balance and improve the state's economy, The Hon'ble Chief minister of Manipur Shri N Biren Shing formally launched 'Agar Tree Plantation' project by planting agar saplings at Luwangshangbam sector of the Langol Reserved Forest on 24th June 2018, Sunday. The launch programme organised by Forest Department and Joint Forest Management Committee (JFMC), Luwangshangbam , the chief minister expressed confidence that agar cultivation would provide a new ray of hope to the villagers for a sustainable economic development in the state.

While stating that the project is a government initiative to provide alternative means of livelihood to the villagers who had been earlier practising poppy cultivation, The Chief Minister iterated that agar plantation on a wider scale will be helpful in saving the environment and checking further deforestation in the state. Around three lakh Agar saplings would be planted across the state, he informed, and sought the people's support for the success of such initiative.

Mentioning about the 'Go to Village' mission, the Chief Minister said that most of the pending grievances have been addressed. The next 'Go to Village' camp would be conducted on June 26 in various parts of the state.

According to Forest and Environment minister Th Shyamkumar, the government's initiative and thrust towards the project will create awareness about the importance of the Agar cultivation as well as significance of protecting the forests among the people. At least fifteen species in the genus Aquilaria trees are known and eight of them are confirmed to produce agarwood. These species are very much suited and native to Manipur. Agar is also produced in a closely related genus called Gyrinops tree. More than 3, 00,000 measured ages above 10 to 50 years old non-infected agar tress are available in Manipur. AGAR WOOD POLICY: I have submitted to Government of Manipur the DRAFT POLICY FOR SUSTAINABLE UTILIZATION OF AGAR WOOD IN MANIPUR 2019. Now the Draft policy is under consideration with the Government Official. The Government of Manipur will declare and notify the policy very soon.
