Success in school

• IEP – Individual Education Plan• IDEA – Individuals with Disabilities Education

Act schools offer special education to those in need

• FAPE – Free Appropriate Public Education

IDEA• Individuals with Disabilities Education Act • Created 2004 • Law that tells how schools should provide the right

type of specialized education • Covers those with disabilities from birth until 21• Key in success of these students because provides

the right accommodations for the students to gain confidence and become successful

IEP: Individual education plan

Mandated by the IDEA+ a specialized unique plan for the student

Meet educational needs for a student with a disability ( both mental + physical )

Complete goals more successful than normally + helps teachers provide a sense of helpand accommodations for the student

FAPE• Individualized to a certain handicapped

person • Not just for education however • Through this law the school+ government will

help the person learn how to succeed in school, employment, living on their own

ADA • Equals the playing field • Provides accommodations from employer+

government • companies are not allowed to discriminate

against those who have disabilities •

Daily difficulties • Transportation• getting dressed • Showering etc • Getting up in the morning • These are the daily issue that many have to

learn to overcome

Rehabilitation Act • 1973 • Prohibits discrimination in programs and

services • States no person who is handicapped should

be excluded •

Dan Liest • Research department for Met Life • Process insurance claims+ bills • Has muscular dystrophy • Can feed himself but cannot shower • At met life he has equipped phone + comp• Loved there at his job even though his disability has

derailed him • Says he is humbled and felt as though he is an

ambassador for his disability

Pam Holmes • Deaf early on in life • Wanted to become a music teacher • Attitude: there was reason she became deaf• Advocate for people with disabilities for a

living • She had a goal of overcoming it

Bethany Hamilton • Pro surfer • Age 13 shark attack amputated left arm • Thought she was never going to surf again+

something within her changed and her drive came with the new perception of life

• Less than a month later she was back on the board

• Had to get back on the board because of her passion

The Gaze • “ The human is self conscious, conscious of himself of his

human reality and dignity” - (Wollen 92).• Ways people view those with disabilities is a whole other

challenge • Not part of the norm- outcaste•

The End • Have to learn from experience • It is easy to say or tell someone to change

their attitude outlook on life but it has to come from within them to change

• Success does no come easy have to wait and work at it
