The Open Public Forum (OPF) Museums & Galleries showcases its collections in privately and
publically owned spaces, such as hotels, storefronts, restaurants, sidewalks, and in open lots, in the
Greater Edmonton area. This collection is not delimited by a specific time frame, but instead seeks
to exhibit a wide range of art and artefacts related to our shared human history. Our staff work with
local businesses and government officials to integrate displays in public locations. These displays
include temporary installation pieces, plinths with shatterproof class tops housing artefacts, and
visual art on inside and outdoor building walls.
This innovative, daring museum format resulted from a desire to make art and museum collectionsaccessible to the public in a very real way. Just by walking along Whyte Avenue, or standing
outside a pub on Jasper, people are exposed to unique artefacts. This means that people have an
alternative to visiting a single museum space; instead, art and artefacts are all around them.
Although this is a challenging endeavour, it is hoped that this open format will inspire more museum
professionals to think about creative ways to engage the public.
OPF stores the 1,500+ permanent items in its collection in a climate-controlled warehouse in the Old
Strathcona industrial district. This warehouse is open 4 days a week to the public, as well as by
private appointment. We are a not-for-profit organization that evolved from our curator, Tom
Nelsons, tiny seed of a dream in 2007. From a small staff of three, we have grown to 9 full time
employees, 3 contract staff, and an artist-in-residence position.
About Us
We envision a city where art can be around
any corner, with you as you wait for your bus
in the morning, or as you chat with a friend
over a late-night snack. We think daily living
should be infused with arts and culture, and
all the conversations that go with it!

MISSION: The OPF Museums & Galleries will engage the public through accessible, innovative, and

PART A-PREPARATION
AIMS /GOALS:The Tin Anniversary Showcase exhibition will celebrate ten years of Open Public Forum
Museums & Galleries active involvement in the Edmonton arts and cultural community through
three separate public exhibits in the Old Strathcona area, Edmonton. These exhibits will help to
further OPFs vision and mission of increasing public access to art and culture and creating a more
vibrant and exciting Edmonton.
The goals of the exhibition are threefold: 1) to celebrate success through the inclusion of our most
popular installations over the past ten years, along with new, never before exhibited pieces
recently acquired by OPF; 2) attract new audiences and increase our membership base; and, 3)
partner with local businesses (especially those who already support the arts) to generate new
locations for OPF exhibits and increase our public presence. Associated with the exhibit are a
number of public programs and events which will further help to inform our current and potential
audience about the pieces in the Tin Anniversary Showcase and our collection, as well as foster a
community dialogue on the value of accessible art.

EVALUATION [FROM PREVIOUS YEARS]:This section is not applicable as this is the first time OPF will organize
and hold an anniversary exhibition and the accompanying festivities and programming.
DESCRIPTION OF EXHIBITION (FOR MEDIA RELEASE TO PUBLIC): Open Public Forum Museums & Galleries is an
innovative, daring museum format created from a desire to make art and museum collections
accessible to the public in a very real way.
The Tin Anniversary Showcase exhibition will celebrate ten years of Open Public Forum Museums &
Galleries active involvement in the Edmonton arts and cultural community. From June 1 to 30,
2017, you are invited to visit our imaginative and unique exhibits in three public locations in Old
Strathcona, Edmonton. These exhibits will be accessible by the public free of charge, seven days a
week in keeping with the vision and mission of OPF which is to provide open access to art and
culture for all Edmontonians. In addition to the exhibition, OPF will organize a variety of free public
programs and activities, as well as host an opening night gala and fundraising event.
We look forward to meeting you, hearing your thoughts, and sharing our passion with you. For more
information, or to enquire about the hours of operation of any of our three exhibits, please contactour Information Desk at 780.555.1234 from 8:30 AM to 6:30 PM Monday to Friday, or Saturdays from
10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Or, you can email your questions or comments to [email protected].

TARGET GROUPS: The varied nature of the Tin Anniversary Showcase exhibitionthe fact that the
exhibition comprises three separate public exhibitionsmeans that OPF is looking to appeal to
diverse audiences (i.e., traditional and non-traditional groups). There is already a dedicated core
membership cohort that has already expressed great interest in the anniversary exhibition and has
supported OPF since its inception in 2007. OPF hopes to build on the cultural and artistic diversity
already present in the City of Edmonton by showcasing a wide range of items that we believe will
capture the publics interest and spark conversation. Below is a list of the target groups identified by
OPF:
1. Current membership holders and volunteers
2. Prospective members (those who may have attended other OPF exhibitions in the past)
3. Members of the public who are as yet unaware of OPF and its mandate
4. Professional artists, art lovers, students, and educators
5. Cultural historians, students, and educators
6. Old Strathcona businesses and residents
7. Old Strathcona Community League
8. Tourists (Canadian and international) who choose to stay at the Met or Varscona hotels
9. The general public aligns with OPFs mandate to be a public forum for access to arts and
culture
EDUCATION &PUBLIC PROGRAMS:There are four specific events and/or programs planned in relation tothe Tin Anniversary Showcase exhibition. However, only the educational programming around the
Arts, Culture, and the Edmontonian program will be described in this section. A cursory explanation
of the other three activities will be included nonetheless as they relate to the overall public
programming plans for this exhibition.
Tin Anniversary Gala & Fundraiser: This event is an evening gala and fundraiser to celebrate the
successes of OPFs first ten years in operation and raise additional funding to support its collections
and programming. Life-size reproductions of the Prince Chairs will be created by a local artisan and
auctioned off at the Gala, in addition to other pieces from local artists. It is hoped that this event
will attract the attention of municipal and provincial government elected officials, as well as
capture the interest of well-to-do Edmontonians who may then choose to donate or support OPF in
other ways, such as acting as its champion.
Behind-the-Scenes at the OPF Gallery & Warehouse: During OPFs operating hours, there will be free
public access to, and programming at, the OPF warehouse and gallery. This will consist of daily
guided and self-guided gallery tours, as well as behind the scenes access with museum staff and
volunteers which will require guests to register beforehand with OPF.

Walk-About on Whyte: Saturday and Sunday afternoons, weather permitting, OPF will partner with
local artists and the Strathcona Community League to provide free guided tours of public art
installations and historically-significant architecture in the Old Strathcona area.
Arts, Culture, and the Edmontonian: Who Are We and Where Are We Going? This free event will be
held on the mezzanine level of The Met Hotel on Whyte Avenue every Friday evening in June from 7
9 PM. Each Friday, a different local artist or cultural expert will provide a short lecture and then
engage in discussion with the audience around a different topic related to the benefits of public art
to the beautification of the city, creation of social capital, and development of community identity.
OPF has surveyed its membership and conducted research into the state of arts and culture in the city
and found that Edmontonians are interested in these issues and want to get more involved in creating
a sense of cultural and artistic identity in Edmonton.
OPF will partner with The Met Hotel to host this free, weekly public lecture program, and there will be a
cash wine bar but free appetizers. In partnering with the hotel, OPF will save on operating costs
related to staffing (only a few staff from OPF will be present each Friday), space rental expenses, will
develop a relationship with the hotel which is mutually beneficial. The Met Hotel already holds a free
wine and cheese event for its guests every evening which is staffed by hotel employees, who also
then handle the cleanup. Costs to OPF will include an honorarium to each guest lecturer, half the
food costs for appetizers, and all marketing and communications staff time. These expenses have
been accounted for in the budget for OPFs tenth anniversary celebration. This budget stems from ourcapital campaign in 2014 which raised donated from the Edmonton business community and private
donors.
Because this program will run out of a hotel on a busy street, anyone can visit the exhibit 24 hours a
day. Kyle Armstrong, the Creative Director at the Art Gallery of Alberta, will show his decay and the
medium of memory and mirrorvideo playing on a loop every Friday evenings from the second floor
balcony at the hotel. This video footage will be visible at street level on Whyte Avenue to passersby
and will hopefully entice them to come into or contact the hotel to get more information about the
video. Mr. Armstrong has also agreed to host one of the guest lectures and public discussion. The
lecture and discussion will be integrated into the video in real time, which will then be visible to people
at street level.
TARGETAUDIENCE(S): With respect to demographics and psychographics, the typical attendee would
most likely be a person (male or female) aged 25 55 who lives in central Edmonton, has some post-
secondary education, is employed in or a student studying an aspect of the arts and cultural sector
(i.e., invested in the topic of the program), and is fairly active in their community. However, to increase
the audience base, marketing efforts will be directed towards a number of target audiences,
including:

of Alberta, Royal Alberta Museum); and,
the general public as The Met Hotel is located in a high-traffic area which increases the
likelihood of walk-ins based on strategic advertising along Whyte Avenue before and during
the program.
WEB PRESENCE: The Community Outreach Coordinator, with direction from the Curator at OPF, willensure that the Arts, Culture, and the Edmontonian program is advertised through a variety of
digital media channels so as to maximize its exposure to potential visitors. In addition to marketing
the program on its own website, Facebook page, Twitter feed, OPF will provide material to be
distributed digitally/via the web to The Met Hotel and other businesses in Old Strathcona (free as
this is a mutually beneficial partnership), universities and colleges in Edmonton, other similar arts and
cultural organizations, the City of Edmonton, and community leagues in and around the Old
Strathcona area.

OBJECTIVES FOR THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE:
Increase knowledge base of accomplishments in the Edmontons arts and cultural
sector (and increased support for the arts)
Appreciation of Edmontons cultural and artistic diversity
Visitors opinions were acknowledged during discussion period
Welcoming and accessible experience for visitors (even those who may not be familiar
with the subject material)
Exposure to Edmonton artists and their work
Better understanding and appreciation of OPFs mandate (they may want to become
members after attending the program or support the organization in other ways)
EVALUATION: The pre- and post-exhibition and programs will be evaluated using quantitative and
qualitative methodology in order to better understand their feasibility, efficacy, and quality.
1. Needs Assessment: This type of front-end evaluation will be used to determine what types of
subject matter are of interest to validate the publics interest in the potential program and
exhibition material. The Community Outreach Coordinator will work with the Curator and
Assistant Curator to create a list of recipients (e.g., current membership base, mailing list,
groups identified in the Target Audience section of this document), develop the fixed and
open-ended response survey questions, and analyze the results. The Administrative Assistantand Registration Assistant will use the list of recipients established by the survey team to
email the surveys out and then forward any questions from survey respondents to the survey
team.
2. Observation A: During the exhibition and program delivery, staff will be asked to provide
feedback during staff meetings and project team meetings. This will help tweak OPFs
activities to provide a better visitor experience. Staff will be asked about their interactions
with visitors and partner organization staff to determine whether any minor changes need to
be made during the course of the exhibition and programming.
3. Observation B: The survey team will review footage captured during Kyle Armstrongs
recording of each Friday lecture and discussion at the Arts, Culture, and the Edmontonian
program. This review will consist of observing and analyzing visitors reactions, commentary,
and the general flow of the event each week. This will inform the subsequent weeks event
and future programming.

4. Post-Visit Questionnaires: Visitors to the exhibition, as well as those who attend programming
associated with the anniversary exhibition, will be encouraged to provide their comments
via a link to a short questionnaire on paper charms attached to wine glass stems and
printed on drink coasters. These charms and coasters could be considered keepsakes and,
by bringing them home, visitors may be more likely to complete the survey. Surveys will be
designed and analyzed by the same team as in the first evaluation method described
above.
