After the trowel and mallet had been presented to Lady Rochdale she laid the stone and said:
In the faith of Jesus Christ, I declare this stone to be well and truly laid; in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen

In 1913 it was hoped to raise 1,000,000 pennies
for the New Church of St Aidan.
At the Laying of the
Foundation Stone, 4,000 pennies
were laid on top of the stone.
Preserved under the stone were:
• some coins of the realm
• that day’s Rochdale papers
• the current issue of All Souls’ and St. Alban’s magazines
• a copy of the service
• a copy of the service at the laying of the memorial stone at Sudden Mission
Room
• the Church Army Gazette
• the quarterly intercession paper for foreign missions
• the names of the church workers of the parish
• the names of all the Sunday School scholars since last Advent
• the names of the Building Committee of the Church
• the names of the members of the
Church Builders’ Union
