After receiving a demonstration by an instructor, identification of all instruments and materials and viewing a slide presentation on the placement of Calcium Hydroxide, the student will:
• Correctly mix and place Calcium Hydroxide on the first molars in all four quadrants of a mounted typodont according to the given criteria.• Correctly state the functions of a Calcium Hydroxide liner.• Utilize a proper fulcrum while placing the Calcium Hydroxide liner.• Correctly state the California regulation regarding placement of a Calcium Hydroxide liner.• Possess knowledge of all associated terminology while explaining the procedure to the instructor.
Catalyst – Substance which produces a chemical reactionDentin – Calcified (hard) tissue underlying the enamel and cementum which forms the body of a toothFulcrum – A finger rest or pivit pointOdontoblasts – Dentin forming cells that live in the pulpPulp – Tissue which fills the pulp chamber and root canal of a tooth, made up of nerves and blood vesselsSecondary Dentin – Dentin formed after the complete formation of the tooth
1. Calcium Hydroxide stimulates odontoblasts to produce secondary dentin.
2. Calcium Hydroxide provides thermal insulation (protection from hot or cold) to the pulp.
• Calcium Hydroxide – 2 tubes (base and catalyst)• Placing instrument• Mixing pads• 2 x 2 ‘s• Mouth Mirror• Explorer• Gloves• Goggles• Mask
Place equal amounts of base and catalyst (usually one very small drop of each) on the mixing pad.
Mix with the placement instrument or spatula, using the ball tip, for approximately 10 seconds or until uniform in color.
Wipe of the placement instrument with a 2 x 2.
Using a mouth mirror for viewing, carefully place Calcium Hydroxide into the deepest part of the cavity prep (swimming pool) using a fulcrum to stabilize your hand. The Calcium Hydroxide should not fill the swimming pool – but only line it about ¾ full, without extending the material into the retention areas or onto the walls of the cavity prep.
After the material is set, check the prep with the mouth mirror, if any Calcium Hydroxide is place anywhere other than the deepest part of the swimming pool, use an explorer to flick off excess dried material.
Some dental office use a light-cure of Calcium Hydroxide which needs an ultraviolet light to help it set up.
If the DDS prefers to place the material, hold the pad under the patient’s chin, hand the doctor the placement
instrument and wipe the instrument in between applications with a 2 x 2 gauze.

1. The material must be mixed according to the manufacturer’s directions.
2. The Calcium Hydroxide must be smooth and confined within the deep area of the prep.
3. The Calcium Hydroxide lines the deep cup-like area of the prep (3/4 full)
4. The Calcium Hydroxide liner leaves room for placement of an insulating base.
An RDA may place a Calcium Hydroxide liner on Sound
Dentin under Direct Supervision.
