Local soul vocalist, Lira, shares her experience as aSouth African female in the music industry and reveals her

    beauty secrets and fashion fetishes.

At the age of 32, you havequite a long list ofaccomplishments. What was itlike for you as a young South

African woman stepping intothe music industry? At the start of my career I wassigned as the new face of R&Band Soul, within a Kwaito label. In order to introduce me into themarket, it was thought, that by

collaborating with the Kwaito actswithin the label, I could getexposure. However, the generalpublic viewed me as a Kwaitosinger. By the time I launched myalbum, the Kwaito stigma hadstuck. I subsequently left andsigned with Sony Africa to re-launch myself. I had no idea how itwas all going to turn out. I wentwith what I felt was the mostauthentic expression of myself. Iwas determined to use my voice

and gift to create a positivechange and to be an example ofpossibility success followed. There are only a handful of reallysuccessful musicians in SouthAfrica and there is only so muchwe can do within our smallterritory. I have been fortunate tobreak many barriers.

How did you get into musicand what was your first break? When I was an undergraduate

    student, I studied accounting and

exchanged my skills for recordingtime at a local studio. I had myfirst demo at the age of 18.When I graduated, I continued inaccounting for a couple years, butsoon resigned and created afive-year plan for my music career. In 2000, I began working withmusician and producer ArthurMafokate and was signed to hisrecord label, 999 Music. Hehelped with the release of my

debut album, All My Lovewhichwas released in 2003. The albumwas ground-breaking with eightsongs out of a 14 track album onhigh rotation. The title trackreached the number two positionon our billboards, kickingBeyonces song Dangerously inLove off that spot. This was thefirst time a South African artisthad received as much air play asour American counterparts.

How would you describe yourmusic and what genre wouldyou classify it as?My music combines Soul, R&Band jazz funk, sung in English anda combination of three nativelanguages. I call it Afro Soul. Mymusic is deliberately positive andupbeat. Theres enough negativityin the world and I have no desireto add to it. People seek solace inmusic and I want mine to be an

    uplifting experience.

    African

SoulWho do you admire in the localand international musicindustry?Internationally, I love John Legend;he has such an old school soulfulvoice. When I met him he cameacross as extremely humble anddown to earth, qualities that I reallyadmire. A huge influence in myformative years was Lauryn Hill.Ive always loved her songwriting. As a songwriter myself, I love thebeauty and simplicity of JohnMeyers compositions. Locally,Miriam Makeba is at the top of mylist. She remains our greatestAfrican global icon. I believe, interms of music within Africa,Nigeria is taking over, with artistssuch as Dbanj and Mr Incredible(M.I.), who are doing phenomenalthings. Mr Coconut Man fromZanzibar rocks my world at themoment and I love AngeliqueKidjos funky African dancing andmaintaining her legacy.

Your latest music videoPhakade is a romantic lovestory. Is it based on a personalexperience and is theresomeone special in your life?Yes, I am married, but I reveal verylittle about my private life. I thinkits good to separate my personallife from my public life. It helps mecope with the demands of my

    career. However Phakade was

filmed to get people in touch withthat old school sense of simpleand everlasting love in an Africanenvironment. Often young loverswere not allowed to show theiraffection publicly, so they foundsecluded places to meet.

With your hectic tour schedulehow do you manage to keepyour appearance fresh andflawless? My lifestyle is very demanding, which forces me to take everythinginto consideration in order to stayin top form. I need to eat light; mydiet is 40-50 percent raw foods

    - no meat, some fish, lots of saladand plenty of water. I also alwayskeep a great moisturiser and sunblock with a SPF 50 on hand, aswell as take a vitamin Csupplement as a general healthmeasure. To alleviate dry skin Iuse my mothers concoction ofVaseline, Glycerin, Cocoa Butter, and Bio-Oil, which Ive been usingsince I was a child. My mother isin her mid-fifties and still hasbeautiful skin. I also try to go tothe spa once a week where I getthe works a manicure andpedicure, reflexology and a scalpand back massage. I call it myme-me-me time.

What are your five must-havetravel essentials?1.

Iman Stick foundation, its smallenough to fit into a sling bag, which I usually use when Itravel.

2.My favourite perfumes; FlowerBomb by Viktor & Rolf forwinter or Addicted to Life byChristian Dior for summer.

    3.Soft SheenCarson Sta-Sof-Frofor my hair.

    4.Innoxa Hydrating Moisturiserfor my face.

    5.Revlon Custom Eyes mascara.

What beauty and hair productscan you not live without?I keep my hair moisturised withSoft SheenCarson Sta-Sof-Fro hairproducts. It works like magic. Itried a lot of products but nothingkept my hair soft and shinywithout making it greasy. My faceis relatively dry but tends to beoily around the forehead and noseareas and I struggled to find aproduct that would adequately

hydrate the rest of my face

without making it oily. InnoxaHydrating Moisturiser has theperfect combination and leavesmy skin nourished and glowing.

You have always taken a verynatural approach to your hair.

Are you not a fan of weaves,

braids and relaxing? While I was in college, I madeextra cash by running a hair salonfrom my room at the studentvillage. My own hair had to alwaysbe well groomed in order topromote my services, so I alwayshad it relaxed, styled andsometimes I put highlights on it.This resulted in my hair becomingthin and weak. Instead I hid it withbraids which caused my hair lineto recede. After all the damage I

had caused my hair over theyears, I decided to leave my hairnatural. My hair has since becomemy trade mark. It is really theeasiest hair style to have. My hairis thick healthy, soft and beautiful.I can rock it with any look anddont feel restricted. It reveals myface and neck and allows me toplay around with accessories. Iplait it when I feel like doingsomething different but not forlong periods of time to avoid

    damaging my hair.

You always look amazinglychic and on trend. Explainyour unique fashion style andwhere do you like to shop?My style is very embracing of myAfrican roots. Nothing reflectswho we are as well as our owndesigns. I love custom madeclothes from Stone Cherrie, boldneck pieces and earrings are myweakness. I love shopping at Wag

on Long Street, Rene Mariane in

Ive done amazingly well athome, so now its time

for me to spread my wings.

Morningside, The Space inRosebank and flea markets. When abroad, Rome is myfavourite shopping destination. Ifind the most unique clothes, shoes and accessories, likeGiorgio Sermoneta gloves whichthe Italians do best. FemmeSistina has some very innovativeyet elegant womens wear as wellas brands like Fendi, Gucci andChanel.

Do you have any fashionfetishes?Yes, my current fashion fetish iscat suits! I found awesome catsuits, at Cameroon Clothing inMorningside Shopping Centre,Johannesburg. They are extremelyversatile and can be worn during

the day and glammed up at night.I liked them so much I boughtevery design they had, and I worethem throughout summer!

What is on the cards for you in2012?Im releasing my debut Americanalbum Rise Againthis summer2012. I also recently filmed a newlive concert DVD hitting Africaaround the same time. Its titledLira: The Captured Tourand was

filmed during my sold out 2011Captured Tour in South Africa. In May 2012, I make mycinematic debut as the supportlead in the Antonio Faldutodirected drama, The ItalianConsul. The film premiered at theTaormina Film Festival in Italy

where I became the only secondAfrican vocalist to grace theTeatro del Greco stage sinceMiriam Makeba. Ive doneamazingly well at home, so nowits time for me to spread mywings and see how far I can go. Iwill be filming a new music video

for Feel Good which will be thefirst single introduced to the USand doing a 45 venue tour in theUS this Fall. I would also love todo an African tour... I have myheart set on it!
