Major Partners
Preferred PartnersThe race to the TSL finals and minor premiership was done and dusted a fortnight ago, but Round 18 threw up one more surprise when Lauderdale defeated Clarence and then found they had dropped to the elimination game by virtue of Launceston’s rout of Hobart. While minor premier Burnie will enjoy a week off, Clarence and Launceston, who own all the TSL silverware to date, will now play in the qualifying final. However, the Roos are far from bounding into the finals. Their efforts over the last fortnight against North Hobart and Lauderdale suggest they have to find another level to seriously challenge the experience and quality of the 2012 Dockers. Notwithstanding that Launceston’s form has also been patchy, but at least it is winning form. Discounting the win over Hobart their previous victory over South Launceston was brittle, but arguably sees them better prepared to take the next step. The advantage of playing at the familiar North Hobart Oval may be enough to give the Roos a slight edge.Lauderdale and Glenorchy are arguably the two form sides competing in the first week of finals. However, come Saturday evening one of them will be planning for a new season. The Bombers were desperately unlucky to miss the double chance, but coach Darren Winter will no doubt have put that thought behind him and expect his charges to do the same. Glenorchy are rebuilding but have not bottomed out given they have contested all 4 TSL finals series to date. This should be a close and fascinating contest with Glenorchy slight favourites by virtue of the finals experience that they have built in previous campaigns.Of the also rans North Hobart would have been disappointed to miss the finals in 2012 after their progress in the previous season. However, South Launceston’s improvement was marked and suggests their first TSL finals series may be just around the corner. The ageing North Launceston, developing Devonport and the defiant Hobart will also have to begin planning for 2013 earlier than they hoped.
BURNING QUESTIONS: Similar to 2011, Clarence has stumbled into the finals. Can finals action bring out their best against the reigning premier, Launceston? Can Lauderdale continue their impressive roster season form and make Glenorchy their first TSL finals series scalp?
THE TORCH - FINALS SERIES WEEK 1
Great Finals Series Beckons in 2012
Firstly, congratulations to the Burnie, Clarence, Launceston, Lauderdale and Glenorchy Football Clubs on securing a birth in the 2012 Wrest Point State League finals series.
With the home and away season now completed the business end of football now kicks in and what an exciting and even finals series it is turning out to be. The 2012 finals series promises to be another closely fought contest between five clubs who all have the potential to reach premiership glory.
There is no doubt on current form lines that the Burnie Dockers Football Club head into September as the early favourites given the outstanding year they have had in the home and away season. Well done to the Dockers machine on their good work, but as they are acutely aware the job is only half done and coach Brent Plant and his football department will no doubt begin planning their final assault on the title of 2012 Premiers this weekend.
Burnie now has the benefit of a week off in the first week of the finals with Clarence and Launceston going head to head in the Qualifying Final and Lauderdale and Glenorchy competing in the Elimination Final.
Once again the might of Clarence has shown through as they prepare for another final series. Their experience in September has become legendary, but they will have their work cut out in 2012 topping a fully fit Launceston outfit that are keen to retain their premiers’ title. Launceston’s form at the back end of the year is improving and this should be a great contest for the right to challenge the Dockers for the first birth in the Grand Final later in September.
Lauderdale and Glenorchy should also be a cracking match given their history against each other this year. The head to head sees Lauderdale in front, but both Clubs have had a great run into the finals series with great victories against Clarence and Launceston.
Glenorchy were considered vulnerable heading into this season as they began a rebuilding phase, but they have been well coached by Ben Beams and deservedly take their spot in their 4th consecutive finals campaign.
However, the highlight of this year’s final series is undoubtedly the progression of Lauderdale under coach Darren Winter. Desperately unlucky in Round 18 when they defeated Clarence, but they still managed to lose the double chance to Launceston. To finish on 14 wins alongside Clarence and Launceston is a huge leap forward for the Southern Bombers.
I wish all clubs who are participating in finals the very best and look forward to being at North Hobart Oval for our first ever senior finals double header to kick off the Wrest Point State League finals series for 2012.

Heart and soul of the football club. Inside utility, can play in a number of positions. Looking forward to a big year after a very solid preseason.
Up and coming rising star. Plays centre half forward with a great work ethic and unbelievable set of hands.
Utility who is capable of playing forward/ruck or key defence. Very smart with his ruck work and always make his presence felt with his big strong body and his smarts around goal. Loves playing on the big stage.
Capable of playing in any position, but will be an asset to the midfield this year with his ball winning capabilities and big frame. Strong mark and super boot.
Another up and coming young star with huge potential who really glides across the ground with wonderful speed and agility. Carries the football through the lines.
Ex Geelong/North Melbourne and the premier player of the TSL. Can play in all positions, preferably midfield/forward and loves playing on the big stage so we are expecting big things from him.
Hard as nails midfielder who loves the in an under and bash and crash of the inside ball. Outstanding tackle pressure.
Hardworking centre half forward in a similar mould to Nick Riewoldt in relation to his aerobic capacity. Works hard all day and the Roos look to go through him at all costs.
Big burley forward who is a leading goal kicker at the club back in 2006. Rarely gets beaten in a one on one dual up forward. Has had a full preseason and will be a focus in our forward line.
One of the great penetrating kicks of the competition. Has great speed and endurance. Looking forward to seeing what he will bring to the Roos in 2012.
Veteran defender who had a season off last year. Has worked extremely hard over preseason and is looking fitter than ever. Expecting him to have a big impact with his big frame.
Plays a key defensive role and uses his attributes with his closing speed and his physicallity in the defensive contest. Considered a senior defender now, will be very a very important member of the back six.
One of the best defenders in the competition. He will hold down a key defensive post and is now one of the more senior players at the club. Really looking for a big year out of this smart defender.
Has now played two seasons at season level and will be looking to hold down a midfield/half forward role. Has a great work ethic and capable of kicking goals.
A power athlete who loves the physicality of contest and will make an impact up forward with his vertical leap and also his defensive pressure. Taken his strength to a new level this preseason, one of the best tacklers I have seen.
Recruited this year from Glenorchy, Jake has had a wonderful preseason and is now really starting to flourish. Great speed and endurance with skills to match.Very smart at a stoppage.Looking forward to seeing more of this man.
A player who will step up to TSL level with no issues. Hard, athletic, skill full and selfless are all words that describe this new recruit. He has a penetrating kick and capable of playing anywhere on the ground.
An impressive footy resume after being drafted by Richmond back in 2003. A quality utility capable of hurting the opposition wherever he is playing. With a great kick and the Endeavour of three players combined, look to see ‘Rat’ playing many key roles this season.
Lured back to the club after a few seasons away. Nathan has worked extremely hard to get his body right to play TSL football and is very determined to do so. Can play inside midfield or as a clever half forward, usesthe ball well and is tough as nails.
After a few frustrating seasons with injury, Zac is starting to hit his straps as a tough midfielder. His confidence has grown over preseason and is now looking to stake his claim at a spot in our midfield. He has great courage and hits the contest hard.
Looks to succeed at TSL after having an outstanding season in the Old Scholars where he won the Association Best and Fairest. Capable of playing inside or out and has great endurance. Loves to win the hard ball and tackles well.
Had his first experience of senior football last year, and after a big preseason with the mariners, the club will be looking for this defender to play some consistent football in a key post this year.
Had his first season with the club last year, and has had a quality preseason. Has tremendous power and leap. Will be looking to cement a spot in defence.
‘The Freak’ has some extraordinary attributes and is looking to harness these to play senior football this year. The switch from forward to back seems to be proving a good one for this tough character.
18 Trent sTaNDeNTrent has the ability to break a game open and win a game off his own boot. Has uncanny crumbing and goal kicking ability. An exciting year for an exciting player.
35 Jarrod WaTliNgA player we worked very hard on to get down from Smithton and with good reason. He has a deadly kick and great ball winning capabilities. With great balance and endurance, he would be a handy addition to any midfield.
11 Brodie laNgForDWe lured this former U/19 captain back to the club and he has not disappointed. Has a great work ethic, clean hands and kicks well on either foot. At nearly 190cm he will be a handful for opposition coaches to nullify through the midfield or forward.
Commenced his senior football career at North Hobart in 2003, the same year he made his VFL debut with the Tasmanian Devils. Played out 2003 and all of 2004 with the Devils under Mathew Armstrong before missing 2005 through injury. Spent 2006 and 2007 in Old Scholars, before becoming Clarence assistant coach from 2008 under Brendan Bolton and Brett Geappen. First year as Senior Coach in 2012. A level two accredited coach.
