The Department of Information Science and Engineering organized AICTE-Sponsored
Short Term Training Programme (STTP) on ‘Research Challenges and Emerging Trends in
Ontology and Data Science for Deep Learning’, from 12th October to 17th October 2020. The
purpose of this short-term training program was to enhance the skill set and knowledge of the
faculty members, Research Scholars and Industry professionals in areas like Bigdata, Data Mining,
Machine Learning, Ontology, Artificial Intelligence and Data Science. 80 participants from
various academic institutions and industries attended the programme.
Topics of the STTP:
Data Mining using Weka and Orange
Social Network Analysis for Big Data
Ontology
Ontology and Automation
Big data Analytic
AI and Automation
Data Science – The Emerging Trend
Machine Learning for Industrial Consultancy
Big Data in Industry
Natural Language Processing for Big Data
Deep Learning – Basics and Algorithms
Research challenges in Deep Learning
The STTP was inaugurated by Dr. P Mahabaleswarappa, Principal, MVJCE, on 12th October.
On behalf of the Management and the Institution, the Principal welcomed all the participants and
Resource Speakers to the Short erm Training Programme (STTP) on ‘Research Challenges and
Emerging Trends in Ontology and Data Science for Deep Learning’. In the welcome address, he
mentioned that considering the present research interest areas, the topic of the training program is
very apt. He added that Ontology is mainly concerned with organizing data into information and
knowledge, using which we can solve various problems in our domain. He said that in recent times,
every software industry and academic institution has been speaking about IoT, Machine Learning,
Cyber Security, Data Science etc. and Ontology is well-connected to all these thrust areas.
Following the Principal’s welcome address, Dr. Manjaiah D H, Professor, Mangalore University,
delivered the keynote address. In the keynote session, Dr. Manjaiah remarked that before three to
five decades, researchers had to put in enormous effort to solve a research problem because they
lacked proper knowledge of how to analyze or process large volumes of data. But today, with the
introduction of various emerging areas like Data Science, Data mining, Bigdata, Machine Learning
etc., data analysis, categorization and processing have become much easier and more convenient.
Dr. Manjaiah inspired the participants by interacting with them on topics such as Data Science
approaches for business decisions and incorporation of Artificial Intelligence in various real time
applications.
12.10.2020 - Session 1:
Following the keynote session by Dr. Manjaiah, the training program progressed towards Session
1. The topic for this session was ‘Data Mining using Weka and Orange’ and this was handled by
Mr. Praveen Hancinal, Founder and Team Lead, INWHIZZ IT Innovation.
During this session, Mr. Praveen Hancinal explained about the following concepts:
What is data
Why data should be mined
Where data mining is applicable
How Weka tool helps in data mining
Mr. Praveen Hancinal followed this up with a demonstration of Weka and Orange tools for data
mining.
12.10.2020 - Session 2:
The topic for the afternoon session was ‘Social Network Analysis for Big Data’, by Mr. Mayur
Patil, Project Manager at Cloint India Pvt. Ltd. During this session, Mr. Mayur Patil explained the
importance of social network analysis. He demonstrated social network analysis with the help of use cases.
He elaborated on key components and different levels of measures for social network analysis. He explained
the concepts with real time examples.
13.10.2020 - Session 1:
On 13.10.2020, Dr. Sandhiya Ravi, Faculty, Coimbatore Institute of Technology, Anna University,
conducted a session on ‘Ontology'. Dr. Sandhiya Ravi started her session with a brief explanation of
Ontology background.
During this session, Dr. Sandhiya Ravi explained the following concepts:
Types of data relation
Examples of relation
Class hierarchy
Dr. Sandhiya Ravi gave a demonstration on OWL language for Ontology.
13.10.2020 - Session 2:
Session 2 on 13.10.2020 was conducted by Dr. M Thangamani, Faculty, Kongu Engineering College,
Anna University, on the topic ‘Ontology and Automation’.
During her session, the following concepts were explained:
Steps to create Ontology
Ontological structure for concept relation
Ontology data model that can be applied to a set of individual facts, to create a knowledge
graph
Ontologies for better Data Management
Dr. M Thangamani pointed out that Ontologies are now widely used in bioinformatics, and are
becoming increasingly important within the life sciences.
