GENESIS: Durgapur Women's College, instituted in 1980, has been established as a first degree college with the express aim of education of girl students living in the vicinity of the Steel City of Durgapur. The establishment of the college was taken up as a Project of the DNAA (now Durgapur Municipal Corporation). The foundation stone of the college was laid on 5th April, 1981 by the then

Hon'ble Chief Minister of West Bengal, Sri Jyoti Basu. However, the college started functioning from the academic session of 1980, holding classes in the evenings at David Hare Primary School, B-Zone, Durgapur. Durgapur Women's College started functioning from its own premises on Mahatma Gandhi Road since 1982. STATEMENT OF MISSION & PHILOSOPHY OF DURGAPUR WOMEN'S COLLEGE: Education is the basis of all empowerment - be it in the family, society or economy. Without economic empowerment the concept of social empowerment for women becomes fragile. Without a basic degree, the clarion call for women's empowerment becomes meaningless. Hence one of the prime aims of Durgapur Women's College is to impart sound graduate level instruction to girl students. Mere course-work, however, cannot completely prepare a woman to take on the mantle of responsibility in the working world. She has to be imbued with transferable and marketable skills as well. along with their graduation studies. Character and personality development are equally important adjuncts to academic development. Extra and co-curricular activities are therefore an integral part in the calendar of activities of the college. Durgapur Women's College aims to transform the young girls of today into women of substance who will be able to lead tomorrow's world with confidence, courage and conviction.

VISION: "Empowering Women" - academically, culturally, socially and economically - is the stated mission of Durgapur Women's College. With this in view the college envisages expanding on the frontiers of economic empowerment by opening opportunities for professional development. Future plans of the college thus include building up a teacher training facility as also other finishing courses. Our vision is to ingrain in the minds of the young women in our charge with a sense of purpose in life and dedication to the service of the nation and mankind.

STATUS: The College is an Aided, Non-Government one affiliated to the Kazi Nazrul University. The Government, however, has been pleased to bear the expenses for payment of salary only to the Whole-time Teaching Staff, approved SACT and Whole-time Non-Teaching Staff of the college under the Private College rules of the Govt. of West Bengal. All other expenses, including payments to Casual staff and Guest Teachers, are borne by the college.
