Before we get started, I thought it would only be proper for me to introduce

myself. My name is Anup Kumar. I am an Information Technology Consultant by profession. I’m also a Home-Based Internet Business Owner and have been doing business over the Internet for more than 15 years.

What is Affiliate Marketing? Affiliate Marketing has several descriptions, yet all have similar meanings. Affiliate marketing may be an extensive business idea on the web. It’s a collaborative effort between merchants who are selling products or programs and an affiliate’s website. It’s been proved that affiliate marketing is cost-effective and a measurable methodology of delivering long-term results.

It’s become renowned for websites to try and create some extra financial gain for their program or product. Every day, hundreds of people get interested in affiliate marketing and want to create some quick bucks. However, in several cases, these new affiliates don’t absolutely perceive the affiliate world and commit expensive

mistakes; rather, it’s been misunderstood often. One of the common misconceptions that are being associated with affiliate marketing is “selling”, though selling is an important activity of affiliate marketing and the central function of a business operation. The above-said compensation may be given to the affiliate on the basis of a certain value for each visit. Interestingly, in affiliate marketing, from the merchant’s point of view, no payment is due to an affiliate until a sale is completed. Affiliate marketing is typically being managed by affiliate networks. They are composed of two functional bodies, the affiliate groups and the merchant groups. One of the top affiliate network marketing system is SFI Affiliate Marketing and I have been doing this business for the last so many years. The affiliate network acts as a middle-man between the merchant and the associated affiliates. The technology or infrastructure to deliver the merchant’s campaigns and offers are provided by the affiliate network. The affiliates that are part of the program are compensated with the commission fees that the affiliate network has collected from the merchants. The merchant is the one who owns a website or a product or a program, and who is interested to take advantage of performance-based marketing. There are many benefits to the merchant. First and foremost, the affiliate program is maintained and operated by the merchant. It’s to be noted that the merchant needs to do some research on interested affiliate websites to make sure that they are a good fit for that particular website or a product or a program promotion. The key to generating more income lies in finding a perfect fit for their merchandise. The merchant has access to market and customer information, without him spending his valuable time researching for it. The site user who is surfing the affiliate website is not distracted by the banner ads. In fact, the ad might produce interest for that product advertised and drive the consumer to the merchant’s website. It is also the merchant’s decision on the percentage of commission that he is willing to pay for each completed sale from an affiliate. The affiliate marketer also has a lot of benefits. But BEWARE…this is not an easy task to accomplish. The affiliate needs to get into a contract with the merchant regarding the commissions, mode of payment and the payment duration. This will make things easy for both parties. It’s the affiliate’s responsibility to stand for the merchandise that their subscribers would be interested in. Let’s suppose that the site has mainly stay-at-home mother subscribers, then on-line job openings such as surveys would be a good fit for them. These subscribers would also appreciate direct links to kid’s products and informational sites. Merchandisers provide targeted, best-seller items and personal support to their affiliates regularly. They often offer sales promotions that will benefit the merchandiser as well as the affiliate. Affiliate marketing is a great opportunity for both the affiliate and the merchant. If they work together, then they can be an advantage to each other. Moreover, it is an easy and inexpensive way to kick-start, and you can be up and running within a few days. Types of Affiliate Programs

Affiliate marketing programs have never been as popular before as they are today because of a number of reasons. The most probable reason, however, is the fact that the benefits of affiliate marketing have become clearer to a lot of people now than they were before.

Today, both the merchants and the affiliates see clearly that affiliate marketing will work for both of them. The former sees affiliate marketing today as the chance to advertise their products at a lower cost. The affiliate marketer, on the other hand, views affiliate marketing as an easy way of earning profits online by doing what they like most, by creating websites.

People’s outlook about affiliate marketing has changed just as the popularity of affiliate marketing has shifted into greater heights. Today, affiliate marketing is no longer considered as an alternative method for the merchant to advertise his products or as a source of additional income for the affiliates. For both merchants and affiliates, it is now considered as a main source of profits and revenues.

So now the question is: what type of affiliate marketing will work best for you? Are all programs the same? Are the benefits going to be the same from all affiliate marketing programs? Or are there programs that work better than the others?

There are actually different types or classes of affiliate marketing. The number of types will depend on how one will classify them. The basic affiliate marketing programs fall under two categories: pay-per-click (PPC), and pay-per-performance (PPP).

Pay-Per-Click (PPC)

PPC is the most popular type of affiliate marketing for affiliates with small websites. It probably is the easiest way for them to earn money. In PPC affiliate marketing, the affiliate will get paid by the merchant whenever a visitor is referred to the merchant site, that is, whenever someone clicks through the merchant’s banner or text ads. The affiliate marketer gets paid a certain amount even if the visitor he referred does not purchase anything from the merchant’s site. But the typical fees for PPC affiliate programs is small, and usually it does not exceed a dollar for every click.

Pay-Per-Performance (PPP)

PPP affiliate marketing is the most popular among merchants, and is also the most lucrative type for the affiliates. Here the merchant only pays the affiliate whenever his referral translates into an action—that is whenever the visitor he has referred actually buys something from the merchant’s site or when the visitor becomes a lead. For a dedicated affiliate marketer, this becomes the most lucrative type as the commissions in PPP affiliate marketing usually comes in the range of 15–20% of the actual product sales.

PPP affiliate marketing program can be further classified into two types: pay-per-sales (PPS) and pay-per-lead (PPL).

Pay-Per-Sale (PPS)

In PPS affiliate marketing, the affiliate gets paid a certain fee by the merchant whenever the visitor the affiliate has referred to his site actually buys something from there. Affiliate marketers are often paid on a commission basis, but many other merchants would opt to pay a

fixed fee. It is generally higher than the fee paid to affiliates in a PPC affiliate program.

Pay-Per-Lead (PPL)

The PPL affiliate marketing is a slight variation of the PPS type. It is often used by insurance and finance companies and other companies who rely on leads for their company to grow. Here the affiliate is paid whenever the visitor he referred to the merchant’s site fills up an application form or any similar form related to the business of the company. The compensation for this type of affiliate marketing is based on a fixed fee, and this rate is approximately the same as that of the fixed fee in the PPS type.

Apart from these three specific types of affiliate marketing, various other affiliate marketing types exist in business. If the classification is based on the depth of the affiliate network, then it can be classified into three categories: single-tier, two-tier, and multi-tier affiliate marketing. There is also another type of affiliate marketing that pays the affiliate each time the customer he has referred purchases something from the merchant’s site.

Single-Tier, Two-Tier, and Multi-Tier Affiliate Marketing

These types of affiliate marketing are based on the different levels or tiers in the affiliate network by which payments are made. In a single-tier affiliate marketing program, the affiliates are paid only on the basis of direct sales or traffic he has referred to the merchant. The affiliate marketing types PPS, PPL, and PPC fall under the single-tier classification.

In two-tier affiliate marketing programs, the affiliate marketer is not only paid for the direct traffic or sales that he refers to the merchant’s site, but also for every traffic or sales referred by various other affiliates

who have joined the affiliate program through his recommendation. The multi-tier affiliate marketing works in the same way, but the affiliate gets additional commission for a wider number of affiliates in different tiers in the affiliate network.

Residual Income Affiliate Marketing

In residual income affiliate marketing, the affiliate marketer gets paid not only once for every customer he has referred to the merchant’s site, but also whenever the customer he has referred returns to the site and purchases another product. The compensation for such type of affiliate marketing is based on either sales-percentage commission or fixed-fees basis.

The different affiliate marketing types would work differently for merchants and affiliates alike. Each one would generally have their own list of benefits. It is not really for me to tell which type of affiliate marketing will work best for you. It is for you to choose the type of affiliate marketing program that will suit your needs and characteristics best.
