INTERNATIONAL WIG INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

2018 SUMMER INTERNATIONAL WHITMAN INTERNSHIP GRANT DEADLINE – FEBRUARY 2 ND

PROGRAM OUTLINE AND REQUIREMENTS

Who can receive a grant? Any international Whitman student with significant experience, awareness,

familiarity or existing relationships with organizations or individuals outside of the United States who has completed their first year and will be enrolled at Whitman during the Fall 2018 semester. Students must be in good academic and conduct standing with the college. International students should communicate with Kyle Martz and Victoria Wolff before applying for a grant.

Program is primarily designed for 2nd and 3rd year Whitman students who will be enrolled at Whitman during the Fall 2018 semester and who have developed long-term professional goals, have clarity about their academic goals, or have established a direction to their studies and career plans. This program is not intended for students to begin an exploration of an issue, industry or part of the world about which they have only a basic curiosity.

Internships need to be high impact, academically and professionally relevant experiences at non-profit, for-profit, and government offices outside the United States. Internships must not take place at Whitman College and must not involve religious work.

If you are interning for a political party, a federal, state or local elected official you must not be involved in activities that directly aid or assist a candidate’s or political party’s efforts to win a nomination or an election (e.g. campaigning, registering citizens to vote or transporting voters to the polls if this is directly favoring a particular party or candidate).

To qualify for the $5000 grant, the internship must be unpaid. The grant is considered an educational award (taxable income). Please reach out to your tax adviser if you have questions about the award. Additional funding is available for students of high financial need and Pell-eligible students.

The internship must last the majority of the summer. Students are expected to have significant contact with the organization.

If awarded a grant, students must complete a number of grant requirements (e.g. blog posts, surveys, workshops, etc.). The SEC reserves the right to withhold grant funding if requirements are not met/completed.

We fund internships on a competitive basis. We especially encourage applications from students who have not received an internship grant before. If you have already received two SEC-funded Summer WIGs, your application cannot be considered for funding this time.

The SEC will invite applicants to in-person interviews the week following the deadline. We will announce grant recipients no later than February 15th, 2018.

Students’ safety and security are of foremost importance. Therefore, internships must be at organizations, businesses or government agencies that 1) are established and financially secure with websites that instill confidence in the reader, and 2) have a connection to Whitman (via a member of a Board, staff, faculty, alumni or parent).

If awarded a grant, students will need to file an Optional Practical Training (OPT) application with the US government. Whitman Internship Grant funding is contingent on successful OPT application.

Both the applicant and the applicant’s parent or guardian are required to sign a release form.It is the student’s responsibility to acquire a visa if necessary, as well health and travel insurance.

No late or incomplete materials will be accepted.

3-STEP APPLICATION PROCESS

1. Find an internship

A. Talk to your potential supervisor and determine the scope of the internship (job description,

intended work schedule, and supervisory/evaluation process).

B. Give your supervisor the “Supervisor Information” sheet, which outlines their responsibilities (p.

3). If necessary, please translate the document for them.

C. Have supervisor sign the “Student-Supervisor Contract” and sign it yourself (p. 4). If necessary,

please translate the document for them.

2. Fill out the following Google form (log in to Whitmail to access)

SUPERVISOR INFORMATION

GENERAL INFORMATION FOR SUPERVISORS

The funds for the Whitman Internship Grant are allocated by Whitman College. Each student who is selected to for a grant will receive $5000 for their internship during the summer. The grant is considered an educational award (taxable income).

Students are eligible for this grant the summer following their sophomore or junior year, and in a few cases, after their first year here at Whitman or during their senior year if they are planning on returning to Whitman in the fall following the summer. They must be in good academic and conduct standing with Whitman College. International students applying for this grant will need to be granted OPT status by the US government before they can receive funding from Whitman.

GUIDELINES FOR INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCES

1. Internships must be relevant to the educational goals and/or career interests of the student.

2. A student may not work for a relative.

3. In order to qualify for the grant, the internship must be unpaid.

4. Students must answer short answer questions as part of the application. The committee evaluating the applications will be putting a great deal of weight on how the student describes the proposed internship. You can help with this by providing the student with information about the organization, a description of their responsibilities, how they will be trained, criteria and method of evaluation, how they will receive feedback, and the amount of time they will spent with their supervisor.

5. Supervisors must sign the 2018 Summer International Whitman Internship Grant Student-Supervisor Contract in support of the proposed internship position.

6. Supervisors are expected to provide regular feedback (e.g. written, email, in-person)

Students studying abroad before or after the intended internship need to contact Barbara Hoffman in Whitman’s Off-Campus Study office and their study abroad program as well as the embassy/consulate to insure that they can combine an internship and study abroad experience. If you are/will be studying abroad, please contact Barbara Hoffman before you apply for the International Whitman Internship Grant.

The SEC does not handle the visa process and the health insurance process. Students are responsible for their own visas and health insurance.

Note: Passports need to be valid for 6 months beyond the date the student plans to return to the U.S. after the internship ends.

CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION OF PROPOSALS

To maximize your chances for funding, please carefully review the following criteria on which proposals will be evaluated and prioritized. (Note – part of the experience of this internship is the application process, so the quality, thoughtfulness and accuracy of your application will be taken into consideration!)

A. You must have been offered the internship before you can apply for the International Whitman Internship Grant.

B. Applications are evaluated for clarity and presentation. Details, well-wrought sentences, and understandable explanations will increase your chances of being funded. Proofread before you submit your application!

C. Your proposed internship must be relevant to your educational goals or career interests. The majority of your internship should be spent in activities designed to stimulate learning and gain experience.

D. You should receive consistent feedback and guidance from your supervisor. Include the criteria for evaluation as well as how often and what type of feedback your supervisor will give.

E. Evidence of your initiative and commitment to the position is also important. In your application you should describe how you researched, developed and obtained the position.

F. Your supervisor must read the entire application and sign the contract.

G. Applications must be typed on a computer.

H. Short answer questions should be original work. Do not copy information from the organization’s web site or position description.

I. A relative may not supervise the internship.

J. If you have previously worked in the internship or with the organization, you must demonstrate an increase in responsibility from previous experience.
