PRESIDENT’S REMARKS By Cliff Palmer In early April, Tallahassee was the host of the first annual North Florida Homeless Veterans Stand Down where more than 200 veterans seeking assistance with housing, employment, medical, and legal assistance, found many willing agencies and fellow veterans ready to help. The Chapter was represented by providing bottles of water and a helping hand with befriending some veterans. The organizers, lead by COL (USA, Ret) Washington Sanchez, brought 65 providers to the North FL Fairgrounds for 3 days of great food, housing, counseling, haircuts, and even court proceedings set up in a tent by the county. By all accounts it was a great success. I look forward to next year’s Stand Down and having a greater AFA presence. Another great event being planned for our distinguished WWII veterans is the Honor Flight to Washington D.C. on May 11. Our long-time chapter member and former Secretary, Steve Murray, serves on the Honor Flight Tallahassee Board of Directors and has helped to raise more than $100,000 to pay for more than 80 WWII veterans to fly to Washington for the day to visit the WWII Memorial as well as other military memorials. I will serve as a “guardian” to one of the veterans, and help document this important trip. Another significant veteran’s project being planned in conjunction with Memorial Day is the Leon County Schools Veterans Memorial. The memorial is currently under construction, and should be completed in time for the dedication ceremony on May 23 at noon. Please plan to attend to be part of the Chapter members who will present the American and State of Florida flags to honor the students from our county who made the ultimate sacrifice. Thanks to CMSgt (USAF, Ret) John Schmidt for presenting the AFA national medals to two very outstanding AFROTC cadets at FSU, along with the CMSgt Schmidt Award for Community Service (See article in newsletter). In addition to the medals the Chapter presents each year to ROTC, JROTC, and CAP cadets, we also provide a $100 scholarship to each recipient. Given our limited Chapter funds, please consider making a donation on behalf of this important program so that we can continue to support our young men and women students. Please remember that we must recruit new members in our area in order for the chapter to grow. There are many in Tallahassee who could enjoy the benefits of joining the AFA and our chapter, but we just have to find them. One way is to invite a neighbor or friend to one of our quarterly dinner meetings. I’m certain that once they attend a meeting, enjoy the fellowship and listen to our guest speaker, they will want to join the chapter. We are planning an excellent dinner meeting for May 16, so please make your reservation immediately, and bring a friend! Please note that the price of our meal has gone up a couple of bucks to $22 per person (See Reservation Form). May God continue to bless you, your family, and the Col H.M. “Bud” West Chapter. Membership and Community PartnersI want to challenge each one of us to become more involved in 2013. This chapter’s life’s blood is found in our membership. Each individual member is important. As a chapter, we are not growing. It is essential for all of us to support the chapter with our own membership renewals and to encourage others to join. Please support those businesses listed in the Community Partners listing inserted in this flyer. AFA Membership applications (both individual and Community Partners) are available at our dinner meetings and also can be obtained by contacting Richard Gordey [email protected] .

Spring semester is wrapping up quite quickly with commissioning planned for 4 May at 1500. We will commission 11 new 2nd Lieutenants into the USAF with varied career paths. Four will be Combat System Officers (CSO), two will be nurses, and we have each in the areas of Intelligence, Airfield Operations, Cyber Operations, Aircraft Maintenance and Force Support. We had two great events since my last letter: the annual “Lime Cup” sport event in Gainesville FL where we competed on the fields of friendly strife against all FL detachments and came in third; and our inaugural Tallahassee Regional Joint Forces Event where we joined with all four service area ROTC detachments for a great afternoon of competition and food at Tom Brown park. As for all the competitive selection boards for spring, Det 145 did very well. We had 100% selection rate for the rated board picking up four Pilot slots, one for Remote Piloted Aircraft (RPA), and three Combat System Officer (CSO) slots. We also added three more scholarship recipients the Det 145 in

the second round of In-College Scholarship program. Lastly, we completed the selection for enrollment allocations for this summer’s field training program and have selected 20 sophomore cadets to continue in the program through field training this summer. Our current enrollment is approximately 90 active cadets from FSU, FAMU and TCC.Other AFROTC events either completed or upcoming as of the publication date include:12 Apr 2013: Wing Dinning out – Lt Col Cliff Palmer was our guest speaker.17 Apr 2013: Joint Award Ceremony (See below).20 Apr 2013: “Operation Burning Spear” – our annual air war game held at the state disaster response center25 Apr 2013: Wing Change of Command Ceremony4 May 2013: Spring Commissioning Ceremony – Guest speaker is Lt Gen David S. Fadok, Commander and President of Air University

We would like to thanks the “Bud West” chapter for their continued interest in supporting our AFROTC students.
