Please do not hesitate to speak to your child’s teacher if you have any questions or concerns. English Writing – In Autumn we will be: Exploring novels and stories by Anne Fine. Writing a non – chronological report on the life and times of Nelson Mandela which links to Black History Month. Writing a set of instructions linked to a science experiment on properties of materials. Writing an explanation text on ‘Why is water so important to life?’ Exploring myths and legends focusing on the Anglo – Saxon myth ‘Beowolf’. Reading – Our focus text in autumn is ‘Harry Potter and the philosophers stone’ written by J.K Rowling. During Guided Reading the children will: Develop fluency by exploring different reading strategies; Improve their comprehension skills using Reciprocal Reading to deepen understanding. They will be taught to Provide evidence from the text; Make sensible predictions; Clarify meanings; Summarise text. Science Our first topic is ‘Materials and their properties. We will learn to: The properties of materials; What materials are used for; Making and separating mixtures; Planning and carrying out investigations; Analysing results and making predictions. Maths Following a scheme call Maths No Problem, which teaches Maths for mastery and the purpose is to improve the confidence of all pupils. The term will begin with children focusing on Number and place value; Addition and subtraction; A range of problem solving opportunities. Children must learn their times tables off by heart up to 12 x 12. Please remember to make sure your child has their PE kit on a Monday they will take it home to wash on a Friday. Your child’s PE kit must be labelled with their name and new class. Computing Children will learn about E- safety. They will learn about how to use the internet and social media responsibly and safely. They will also learn basic, computing skills involving using PowerPoint for presentations and Excel to process data.
