Model T-55BWater Tower
» Firefighter will describe 5 uses of aerial apparatus and briefly describe tactics for each.
» Firefighter will position and stabilize apparatus on simulated fire ground.
» Firefighter will erect, rotate, extend, and position boom to a target.
» Firefighter will recite load limits given a boom angle and condition.
» Firefighter will describe emergency operation procedures.
» Rescue» Ventilation» Elevated master stream» Fire Suppression
(access to upper levels)» Scene Lighting
» Overhead obstructions» Ground obstructions» Slope» Capacity and reach limits» Specific notes for:
˃ Rescue Access to upper levels˃ Ventilation Fire Suppression
» With engine running, set parking brake» Engage the power take off (PTO)» Chock front wheel
» Use a spotter
» Look for overhead hazards
» Engage master switch
» Turn on Panel Lights» Don’t use “Fast Idle”
unless speed isessential
» Nothing workswithout holding the“Dead Man Control”
» Deploy Outrigger jack plates» Use wooden bearing pads when required
» Select “Jacks”» Set Outriggers individually:
» downhill first» uphill second
» SAFETY: Use a spotter when outriggers are deployed» Line up edge of pad with “pin”
» Extend outriggers until rear bumper raises 3” - 4” and weight is shifted from tires to the outriggers» Raise until selector will switch to Boom» Ensure truck is level
» Switch over to boom control» Walk around vehicle to verify stable condition
» Ensure Boom Functionsswitch is in correct position˃ In: Midship Control˃ Out: Rear Control
» Check overhead hazards» Elevate boom» Rotate to desired position» Extend to desired height
» Standard hand signals for controlling cranes operations
» Due to a part failure˃ Water cannot be pumped directly to the boom˃ Replacement piping has been installed to allow water to be pumped
into the boom˃ A PINCH POINT exists between the ladder base and this new piping
» Due to the PINCH POINT
˃ The boom cannot be raisedhigher than 50o
+ Note the white arrow
˃ If a spotter is usedthe boom can be raisedhigher to 60o
» 1000 GPM @ 100 psi at the nozzle, with ladder at 90o = reaction force of 500 lbs.
» Live loads, due to nozzle reaction & distribution of firefighters on the ladder are most greatly affected when the boom is fully extended and nearly horizontal
» The greater ˃ the horizontal distance from the nozzle to the centre of the truck ˃ the radius of the line of action of the nozzle stream to the boom pivot
» the greater the effect on ˃ boom stress ˃ truck tipping moment
-10 to +90 No load 1000 GPM any direction
45 to +75 300 lb tip 500 lb even
1000 GPM any direction
-10 to +45 500 lb tip 900 lb even
0 GPM
45 to +75 800 lb tip 1600 lb even
0 GPM
-10 to +75 tip supported
1600 lb even 0 GPM
» Erect and position boom for best advantage.» Bring nozzle position out of storage and into
desired position.
» Water delivered by truck pump through 4” hose to 4” rear supply˃ Boom cannot be rotated once line is charged
» Nozzle can be operated from:˃ Rear˃ Midship˃ Umbilical˃ Ladder Tip
» Control pump throttleto get 100 psi @ nozzle˃ 1500 gallons per minute at 100 psi˃ Friction loss through 4” hose is negligible˃ Elevation loss is 0.5 psi per foot˃ Friction loss through “Master Stream” is 25 psi
» Ladder communicationson TAC 3
» Pump operationfrom step due to electrical hazard
» Ladder can be raised/lowered & rotated with afirefighter on it
» Ladder CANNOT be extended/retracted with a firefighter on it
» Generator˃ Right Side, rear compartment˃ Four Halogen Light MAXIMUM
» Boom Lights˃ Two 110 volt lights at tip of boom
» Intercom˃ Rear Panel˃ Midship˃ Tip of Ladder
» Air System˃ Take mask from compartment at rear of Ladder˃ Turn on the Air Bottle at the base of the ladder˃ Don the mask at the tip of the ladder
+ XL30 mask+ Screws into regulator+ Switch regulator
from Don to Use
» Fall Restraint˃ Required when working
on Ladder˃ Belts located in rear
compartment
» Shutdown˃ Nest the nozzle and drain the tower˃ Rotate Ladder using pointer on turntable˃ Retract Ladder˃ Lower Ladder into cradle
+ XL30 mask+ Screws into regulator+ Switch regulator
from Don to Use
Overrides» Keys are in glove box
˃ in cab
» Jacks Override:˃ Raise boom without jacks being
extended ˃ Used when tilting cab forward for
maintenance
» Boom Nested Override:˃ Move jacks when boom is not
nested
Turntable» It is possible to
rotate turntablemanually˃ Housing hole is not centered˃ Need a wrench
Power Pack» To be used in case of
failure of engine, transmission, PTO, or main hydraulic pump.
» Small electric hydraulic pump˃ Uses lots of power
» Controlled by “Aux. Pump” toggle on rear panel
Hydraulic Supply Failure» Complete hydraulic
failure.» Disconnect and
reverse hydraulic lines.
» By service personnel only.
