BASIC ENGLISH

A test of basic skills and how to apply them consisting of two papers

Paper l-Listening (25 minutes)Paper 2-reading and writing (l hour)

Content of the Test-Papers I and 2

The test, which is concerned \ rith functional English, will assess the following eightareas, namely, the candidates' abilities to:

l. write clearly and neatly;

2. spell correctly, punctuate simply, clearly and appropriately and use eorrectgrammar;

3. compose letters concerned with employment, letters offering and requestinginformation, letters making and confirming arrangements;

4. complete forms of various tytr)es;

5. comprehend written and spoken material and in particular to:

(u) understand the overall meaning of both written and spoken English,

(b) make appropriate use of given information to complete further exercisesl

6. seleet and amange information in appropriate sequence;

7. condense information into short notes and expand given information;

8. deal with querieso complaints, requests for information and directions.
