Good, good. How about you?
Are you feeling any better after
taking your medicine?Zach
Phone call (phone rings)
Hi Zach, it’s Matt.
How are you today?Matt
Hello?Zach
Yeah, much better.
l’m actually itching to get out of
my room and do something tonight,
but I’m not sure what, exactly.
Do you have any suggestions for
me?Matt
Really, you want to go out?
Are you sure?
Maybe it’s better if you rest tonight
and we can meet up tomorrow.Zach
I’m okay, really.
Besides, I didn’t come all the way
to Seoul just to sit in a hotel room.
There must be something we can
do. Matt
Well, if you’re sure…I guess we
should do something a bit laid-back
then. I know! How about going to
a jimjilbang?Zach
jim..jil..bang?
I’m not sure I’ve ever heard of that..Matt
A jimjilbang is a Korean spa.
It’s very relaxing. There are hot
tubs, steam rooms, and even a
communal area where you can eat
snacks. Zach
Hmm, well, that sounds okay, but
I’m not a huge fan of hot tubs.
Plus, it sounds kind of boring to be
honest. Isn’t there anything more
exciting we can do?Matt
Hmm, well, it’s raining, so
something indoors would be
best…what about a noraebang? Zach
Noraebang…why does everything
you suggest end in “bang?”
does it mean something?Matt
Ah, “bang” actually means “room”
in English. noraebang, jimjilbang,
there’s even PC bang, where you
can go play computer games like
Starcraft.Zach
Wow, interesting. I thought that
was something people usually did
at home.
Anyway, what’s a noraebang,
exactly? Matt
Sorry, a noraebang is a singing
room. Kind of like karaoke.Zach
Oh, really?
That sounds like it could be fun.
I’ll probably be too embarrassed to
sing in front of other people though. Matt
Oh, no, noraebangs are actually
private rooms where you sing with
your friends.
No strangers watching at all!Zach
Oh, that sounds great.
Where and when should I meet
you?Matt
How about I come by your hotel in
around an hour and we’ll go from
there?Zach
Sounds great, I’ll see you then.
Bye.Matt
See you.Zach

Noraebang
Hello.
Wow, this isn’t exactly what I was
expecting. Why is it so dark down
here?Matt
어서오세요.Ajjuma
We just pay the woman here and
get the room for an hour.
(to ajjuma) 1시간 얼마죠?Zach
This noraebang is a little bit old,
but it will be a lot cheaper than
some of those noraebangs in
hongdae.Zach
Okay, so how does it work?Matt
Thanks!
I’ll be sure to buy you a drink later.Zach
Wow, just 10 bucks for an entire
hour? Not bad. It’s on me this time.
(Matt hands cash to lady)Matt
만원입니다.Ajjuma
Yeah, don’t worry, they are
constantly updating these
machines to include the latest
songs from all over the world.Zach
I can see why it was so cheap, this
place is a little dated to say the
least. Will they even have songs
from this decade?Matt
재미있게노세요!Ajjuma
Okay, this looks like the
remote…all in Korean. Good. Matt
Hahaha, I know, it looks confusing.
Let me explain. This button here
controls the country of the song,
this one selects the language, this
one the singer, and this one is
song name.Zach
Oh okay, let’s see…here it is, my
favorite song. “Livin’ on a Prayer”
by Bon Jovi. Do you know it?Matt
Do I know it?!! That’s one of my
all-time favorites as well.Zach
What are the odds?
Now, how do we get this started?Matt
No problem,
I’m glad you enjoyed it.Zach
Ah, to start it, just push the big
yellow button that says “예약”Zach
All right…(music starts)
Wow, that was one outstanding
hour. Thanks for the suggestion,
Zach. Matt
I sure did, I’ll have to come do it
again soon. Ah, it’s getting pretty
late though. I’d better be heading
back to the hotel.Matt
Okay, let’s talk again tomorrow.
There’s still a lot of Seoul left for
you to see.Zach
