ADX: Software Updates Capacity on demand with ADX License Activation
Feature Activation (v12.1)
– Used to enable premium features (e.g. Layer 3, GSLB)
Software Licensing (v12.2 and above)
– Includes feature activation used to enable premium features
– Upgrade licenses are now available for specific ADX platforms which
can be installed by customer
• Base licenses are pre-installed at the factory
With the v12.2 release the software licensing structure now
includes both feature and upgrade licensing capabilities for select
ADX platforms

processor and port capacity, based on the full ADX 1000 platform
hardware and operating system software
– ADX 1008-1 (1) application core and (8) 1 GbE ports
– ADX 1016-2 (2) application cores and (16) 1 GbE ports
– ADX 1016-4 (4) application cores and (16) 1 GbE ports
– ADX 1216-4 (4) application cores, (16) 1 GbE and (2) 10 GbE ports

ADX: Software Updates (cont.) Unlimited versus Trial Licensing
Two types of licenses supported
– Unlimited (perpetual and never expire)
– Trial (Only for Upgrade Licenses — 45 days)
Example Unlimited and Trial licenses for 1U
– ADX-1008-1-LIC-2PPLS (Perpetual License)
– ADX-1008-1-TRL-2PPLS (Trial License)
– ADX-1016-4-LIC-10G (Perpetual License)
– ADX-1016-4-TRL-10G (Trial License)
Example Unlimited and Trial licenses for Chassis
– ADX-CH-LIC-PREM (Perpetual License)
– ADX-CH-TRL-PREM (Trial License)

Web Management Enhancements Application Template and Software Upgrade
Generic HTTP Template
– Built-in generic HTTP Template which helps to facilitate the
configuration of HTTP Server Load Balancing
Code Upgrade through web UI
– Copy software image from TFTP Server
– Reboot the device
Additional ADX Feature Enhancements
SYN-Proxy support
6-6-4 and 6-6-6 Gateway support

SYN-Proxy Enhancement
In previous ADX releases, we offered line-rate SYN-attack
protection for IPV4 traffic. This has now been extended to the
protection of IPV6 traffic
– Enabling SYN-Proxy is the same as IPV4 — no new commands have
been introduced
– SYN-Attack is handled by hardware at line-rate
– Supports both 664 and 666 deployments

ADX RA-based Default Route Upstream Routers
IPv6 Router Advertisement (RA)-based alternative to VRRP1
Upstream routers send periodic RAs with different preferences
(high, medium or low); default value is medium
Set RA-interval to be a value lower than the required failover time

Response Time Predictor Enhancement Overview
Review : The ADX uses a parameter called the predictor to
determine how to balance the client’s traffic across the servers
ADX Connection Distribution policies:
– Round robin
– Least connections (default)
– Weighted distributions
– (Updated) Response time
– Response time/least
connections
– Least local connections
In previous releases traffic was always
sent to the server with least response time.
As of v12.2 the response time of the
server will be used as a dynamic weight
in load balancing decision.

Response Time Predictor Measurement of Response Time and Associated Weight
Based on response time of health check packets
– If Layer 7 Health Check is enabled, application response time
– If Layer 4 Health Check is enabled, SYN/SYN ACK RTT
Health Check must be enabled to make it work
The response time predictor is only applicable to TCP traffic (for
both well-known or non-well-known ports)
The load balancing decision is based on response time weight
instead of the actual response time
– Response time weights are derived from actual response time
measurement, the smaller the response time, the larger the response
time weight 1

Transparent Cache Switching (TCS) Enhancements Overview
Shared Layer 2 active-active TCS support
– Operates at Layer 2 and provides for two or more cache groups directly
attached split across the two ADXs
– Each uses all Caches in each group regardless of which ADX they are
connected to
– Traffic may be asymmetric across the ADXs because which route the
traffic may return is uncertain
– Sharing caches allows Link and ADX redundancy while utilizing all
available caches
Support an out-of-band SNMP-based polling mechanism to poll the
cache servers for their load information
– Vendor specific MIB is available
