ABOUT US

Viewed as one of the finest zoological institutions in the U.S. and a proud accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), Zoo Atlanta has a mission to inspire value and preservation of wildlife through a unique mix of education and outdoor family experiences. From well-known native wildlife to critically endangered species on the brink of extinction, the Zoo offers memorable close encounters with more than 1,000 animals from around the world. The Zoo’s newest destination, Scaly Slimy Spectacular: The Amphibian and Reptile Experience, featuring more than 70 species in a 111,000 square-foot complex, opened in 2015 and is the world’s first LEED Gold-certified reptile and amphibian exhibit. Zoo highlights include giant pandas, including Ya Lun and Xi Lun, a set of twins born to Lun Lun on September 3; North America’s largest zoological population of great apes; and a global center of excellence for the care and study of reptiles and amphibians. Up-close-and-personal animal experiences include behind-the-scenes Wild Encounters with African elephants, Aldabra giant tortoises, giant pandas and warthogs. Zoo Atlanta is open daily with the exceptions of Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.

POINTS OF PRIDE Zoo Atlanta is one of only four zoos in the U.S. housing giant pandas. Five cubs have been born at the Zoo: Mei

Lan (2006); Xi Lan (2008); Po (2010); and Mei Lun and Mei Huan (2013, and the only giant panda twins in the U.S.). Mei Lan, Xi Lan and Po now reside in Chengdu, China.

Zoo Atlanta President and CEO Raymond B. King was voted “Atlanta’s Most Admired Nonprofit CEO” by the

Atlanta Business Chronicle for two consecutive years (2014 and 2015). Zoo Atlanta received the Quarter Century Award from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) in 2016.

The award recognizes zoos and aquariums which have maintained the rigorous accreditation standards of AZA for 25 years or more.

Scaly Slimy Spectacular: The Amphibian and Reptile Experience, opened in 2015, is the world’s first LEED Gold-

certified reptile and amphibian exhibit. In its opening year, the complex also won “Top Project in Commercial Construction under $30 Million” from the Construction Management Association of America. Other honors included the Best Project Award in the Cultural/Worship category from ENR Southeast.

Giant pandas are the Zoo’s most significant conservation investment, with support from the Zoo directly

benefiting wild giant pandas on eight nature reserves in China. In 2012, Zoo Atlanta received the prestigious International Conservation Award from AZA in recognition of the long-term achievements of its giant panda program.

Zoo Atlanta is home to the nation’s largest zoological collection of great apes. The Great Ape Heart Project is

headquartered at Zoo Atlanta. In 2015, the project earned its second National Leadership Grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) – the third show of federal support for the world’s first collaborative effort to understand, diagnose, and treat cardiovascular disease in great apes living in zoological settings.

In 2011, Zoo Atlanta received the AZA Edward H. Bean Award for Significant Achievement in honor of the long-

term commitment of its gorilla program. Zoo Atlanta’s herpetology collection is one of the foremost in the country and includes hundreds of animals.

The Zoo is home to one of the world’s only zoological collections of Guatemalan beaded lizards, a rare species believed to number fewer than 200 in the wild, and has been successful in reproducing these lizards.

Zoo Atlanta has been recognized among its peers for a commitment to field conservation programs. In recent

years, Zoo Atlanta has numbered among only a small fraction of AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums to meet or exceed AZA’s goal to encourage member organizations to contribute 3 percent or more of their annual operating budgets to field conservation programs.

The Zoo Atlanta Leadership Council inaugurated its first class in the Spring of 2010. Individuals nominated for the Council are community leaders from across the State of Georgia who recognize the importance of the Zoo to both the state as well as zoological and environmental communities in the United States and abroad. Individuals come from a variety of professional and educational backgrounds and experiences. All are chosen for both their leadership in their profession and the communities in which they reside as well as their passionate commitment to achieving Zoo Atlanta’s vision of a world in which humankind values, protects, and preserves the diversity of species on Earth.

In order to serve Atlanta’s oldest cultural institution, a member of the Council should be willing to function as an ambassador for the Zoo’s programs and activities. In order to be knowledgeable about Zoo events and programs, members are asked to attend four meetings annually with Zoo personnel in order to learn as much as possible about the organization’s animals, research, conservation efforts, educational programs and engaging events. In addition to the meetings and presentations, members will be invited to special events and have behind-the-scenes access to various animals and Zoo management and care practices. Members are then asked to disseminate the information they have gained through these unique experiences in their corporate, community and social circles.

Zoo personnel will also use the meetings as a forum to present new business initiatives to the Council and seek advice, expertise and, when appropriate, in-kind services, media connections and advancement ideas as well as support for those initiatives.

Because a financial commitment to the institution is a critical part of serving as an ambassador in the community, members of the Leadership Council support the Zoo personally with a gift of $1,500 or more to the Annual Fund. Members are also asked to assist in identifying and recruiting prospective donors to join this important group of upper-level Zoo Members. It is also desired that Council members will support the Zoo’s annual gala, the Beastly Feast.

Leadership Council membership terms are for a period of three years with renewal options.
