PRESS RELEASE

New for 2017,Chevrolet SilveradoHD trucks feature a

patented air intake systemthat drives cool, dry air intothe engine for sustainedperformance and coolerengine temperatures duringdifficult driving conditions.

The intake systemunderwent extensive test-ing based on the mostchallenging real-worlddriving conditions toensure capable perfor-mance no matter theweather.

Marked by a dramatichood scoop, the all-new airintake system provides 60percent of the air to theDuramax diesel enginefrom an inlet at the frontof the hood. The air pro-vided to the engine is veryclose to the outside ambi-ent temperature and muchcooler than the air under

the hood.Cooler air helps the

engine run better underload, especially in condi-tions where engine andtransmission temperaturescan rise quickly. Runningcooler allows the Duramaxdiesel to maintain fullpower and vehicle speed forcapable trailering in eventhe toughest conditions.

There’s also a ram-aireffect from the incoming airat highway speed that helpspack more air into theengine. The air filter hous-ing also draws 40 percent

additional air from a drylocation in one of the frontfenders. It blends with thecooler air from the hoodinlet before funneling intothe Duramax’s combustionchambers. This assures theengine can breathe even ifthe hood is completelyblocked.

TOUGHNESS“The 2017 Silverado HD

was engineered to providemaximum utility for ourcustomers in even themost extreme situations,”

said Eric Stanczak, chiefengineer, Silverado HD.“While developing this all-new induction system, weconsidered our customerstowing a maximum-weighttrailer through theEisenhower Tunnel on ahot, rainy summer day.”

At more than 11,000 feetabove sea level, theEisenhower Tunnel, is thehighest vehicle tunnel inthe world and one of thehighest elevations for anyroadway in North America.

Maximized engine per-formance requires more

than cool air; the air mustalso be clean and dry.Accordingly, the functionalhood scoop includes aunique air/water separatorto ensure only combus-tion-enhancing dry air isdrawn into the engine. Theair charge enters an expan-sion chamber containing asharp, 180-degree turn onits way to the air filter hous-ing. That creates a velocitychange that causes humidi-ty or mist to form larger, heavier droplets that areflung centrifugally againstthe outside wall of the hous-ing. The collected waterdrains through a valve, while the air charge contin-ues on to the filter housingand into the engine.

Testing the effectivenessof the system was rooted inreal-world driving condi-tions of every degree —from misty rains to mon-soon-level downpours; frompowdery snow to wind-driv-en ice pellets; from desertdust to arctic cold.

Surprisingly, torrentialdownpours do not neces-sarily pose the biggestchallenge, according toKevin Dunn, global vehicleperformance for splashengineering: “Big, heavyraindrops from a thunder-storm are relatively easy toeliminate from air. Themore challenging issuecomes from the mist-likespray generated bysemitrucks on wet high-ways.”
