What is Advertising?

Advertising is any paid form of non personal presentation and promotion of goods, services & ideas by an identified sponsor.

It is a general phrase used for the announcements made by sellers to promote the sales of their products.

patronage or some other response. And as that suggests, ads have two basic purposes: to inform and to persuade.

 In today's society, advertising has a profound impact on how

people understand life, the world and themselves,

especially in regard to their values and their ways of choosing and behaving.

 Advertising communicates that men should be handsome, tall, athletic, caring husbands, thoughtful fathers and virile at all times. These images are often unrealistic and unattainable.

Hidden costs - when you're buying a product you're paying for the product itself-meaning its packaging, costs of development.

Lying to customers - Advertising company can exaggerate certain features of their products up to an overly lame degree.

Degradation of art - Everything we see or hear on TV is meant to sell us something.

Misrepresentation -  The problem arises when the dramatization crosses the line into falsely representing a product. Hefty fines can result from false advertising.

Advertisers often hide side effects of products and drugs and then people face miserable circumstances .

• Unrealistic ExpectationsAd for prescription drugs has resulted in unrealistic expectations about the effectiveness of drugs and their side-effectS. Voice-overs give the downside to the drug, but the visual images show healthy, happy people. It's not unusual to hear that even death may be a side-effect of a prescription drug.

Beauty and health products may also not live up to their promises, resulting in wasted consumer dollars. Disclaimers are often hidden in very small print on product packaging and in out-of-the way spots in ads.

 Based on the images they see in advertising, women often feel they should be thin and beautiful and hold down full-time jobs while also being full-time mothers.

• False Images – It's not an accident when a movie hero holds up a can of Coke instead of Pepsi. Ad influences how people feel about themselves -- often in a negative way.

Ads for many sugary cereals encourage children to ask their parents for those particular products -- regardless of whether the products are good for the children.

 Fast food for example is high in calories and sugar that contribute to increased-weight gain.Fast foods also replace healthy eating habits, People who consume fast foods are less likely to eat fruits, vegetables, milk etc. This change in eating habits can easily lead to obesity. Not just on kids but also prominent in adults.

Infact It's not coincidental that the most heavily advertised toys during the holiday season end up being the top sellers. Children are susceptible to advertising.

Ultimately, advertising intents to make us buy their product and they achieve this by studying their target

audience, getting to know us intimately, find our fears and desires and

ultimately exploit them in order to achieve a profit margin. the problem

with this is that by exploiting the fears and desires of an entire society, we

continue to maintain a dysfunctional society full of insecurities, paranoia,

cynicism, jadedness, narcissism.
