COMMUNITY RESIDENTS TO VOTEON SCHOOL DISTRICT BUDGET MAY 15
On Tuesday, May 15 from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. in the High SchoolAuxiliary Gym, Averill Park (AP) residents will vote on a proposed$53,519,565 budget for the 2012-2013 school year. The proposaldecreases spending by $1,524,753, or 2.77%, from the currentyear – the third consecutive year of budget decreases andrepresents a 3.95% increase on the tax levy. How is a 3.95% tax levy possible? The Tax Levy Cap (TLC) has been referred to as a “2% tax cap”.The law actually requires an eight-step formula to determine howmuch a district can increase their TLC. For AP, 3.95% is withinthe “cap”.How did the district develop this budget? The district sought community feedback/suggestions through aseries of budget forums. Ideas and opinions expressed in theseforums, along with 1,404 online survey responses, helped shapethe proposed budget. What is so challenging with this year’s budget?• State Aid decrease to $16,689,258 * Includes Gap Elimination Adjustment – three year total of $10.8 million * Equal to 2002-2003 level• The conclusion of $1.1 million in Federal Job Restoration Funds• The judicious draw down of $8.5 million of fund balance and reserve funds over the past 5+ years resulting in an average tax levy increase of 2.67%.What are specifics in the proposed budget?Eliminates: 34.4 positions – 2 Administrative, 22 Instructional,9.9 Non-Instructional and 0.5 Related Service Positions; for a 3year total of 80+ positions.Preserves: Full-day Kindergarten, Transportation, School Nurses,Substance Abuse Counselors, Music (gr. 1-8), Art (gr. 1-8),Advanced Placement courses, many Electives and Languages otherthan English classes, Junior Varsity and Varsity sports, andTechnology classes. What has the district done to reduce costs or rethinkoperations?Over the past 3 years significant savings have been realized inareas such as:• Cooperative Bidding/Shared Services• Health Insurance Changes• Building Consolidation• Early Retirement Incentives for Staff• Energy Efficiencies• Transportation Optimization. For more information: Please visitwww.averillpark.k12.ny.us and go to the Budget Corner.

What A Handsome Boy!BUDDY: Lab / Shepard mix (we know mom was a lab mix). Ten years young. Buddy was one of the pups of "Keeper" the dog who was the reason for Keeper Rescue being formed ! He was returned to rescue after almost 8 years because his family had to move due to job loss and could not take Buddy. We have had him back in rescue 2 1/2 years now !!..His vet work is all cur-rent and he appears to be very healthy and a young 10 years old ! He loves to go for walks and to
McDonald's for a burger. He has a quirky, fun personality and is well behaved. He is not good with other animals so he needs a home where he is the only pet. He is a bit shy at rst with people but after a cookie and a hand shake he's ne. He is a runner so we need a home where he will not be able to take o. A calmer home is for him. One of our volunteers has been taking him out on Sunday's for a ride, walk and burger and thinks that he is a GREAT dog !! If you want a sweet older man in your life Buddy might just be the one. He is a great boy and deserves a home !!

“Averill Park Senior John Suloman returns a deepforehand to a Mohonasen player during a match onMonday at APHS”.John won his personal match 6-0 and 6-2.
As we start the SAT, NY State test, and AP exam season, many of us feel overwhelmed by the workload, but neverthelessAP athletes find time in their day to dedicate themselves totheir sports and to rock at them too. Lacrosse, Baseball, andTrack and Field players all took their fields this week. The Lacrosse team first played Ballston Spa on Tuesday anddemolished the competition, 13-2. Great job to Andrea Bond,Mary Hitchcock, and Marionna Velente who all scored one goal,Darian Goyar, Emily Halpin, and Sarah Laranjo who had twoeach; finally phenomenal job to Molly O’Bryan who scored anamazing four goals. The team then took on Shenendehowa, and unfortunately, lost to the green giant 10-3. Goals werescored by Emily Halpin, Morgan Lionarons, and Sofi Sorriento. The Track and Field boys also participated in competition thisweek. The boys traveled to the Schenectady invitationals onThursday and ran very well. Congratulations to Kevin Ottywho came in third in the 110 Meter Hurdles, and second in the400 Meter Hurdles. Also a Great job to Mike Hayes who placedsecond in the Boy’s Triple Jump, John Rodgers who placed firstand Kenny Sears who placed fourth in Boys Discus. Way torepresent AP boys!Baseball took on both Ballston Spa and Shenendehowa thisweek. The boys pulled out a victory to start the week, beatingBallston Spa 8-4. Great job boys. Then the team took on Shen, but unfortunately fell short to the great opponent 13-6. Goodgames this week! The Warriors will be taking on even more tough competition inthe upcoming weeks, so make sure to come and cheer on theWarriors! And a final reminder that the budget vote is Tuesday,May 15th! If you have any questions or comments, feel freeto contact me at claireeverett11@gmail.
Runner by day, racer by night! Tyler Chartrand is a senior atAverill Park High School and has been running on the VarsityTrack and Field team since he was a freshman. He competes inboth the indoor and outdoor seasons for AP and loves thecompetitiveness between everyone, whether it is his ownteammates or his opponents. He finds it helpful that his teamwill push each other to be faster and faster and strive for thebest together. You can find Tyler behind the start line for theraces ranging from the 100 meter to the 400 meter, severalrelays, and jumping events! Last indoor season, Tyler wasawarded a Scholar Athlete award. Because he does compete inboth seasons of track, he doesn’t train very much and runs nomore than a couple miles a day; but before every meet helistens to music to help him focus, and before every race heslows his breathing down at the start line and studies the trackout in front of him. In his spare time, Chartrand likes to hangout with his friends and family, work, and race full size sprintcars. Tyler said that he loves racing and has been racing variousvehicles since he was six years old. The definition of a Junior-Senior is a student who is graduating a whole school year early, like Tyler. He is a junior that is graduating early and heading offto college this fall. He will be attending Linn State TechnicalCollege in Linn, Missouri. Tyler is going to major in Automotiveand High Performance Technology. When he was younger, hisfamily lived down in Missouri; and the love for the wide openfields and everything was what drew him back there for thenext step in his higher education. “Being a dedicated athletemeans you are on time to practice every day, you work yourhardest and give it your all every day of the week, take controlof things, set an example, and push yourself to and beyondyour limits,” a very well said statement from Chartrand. Tylerfeels that many people have inspired him to be who he is todayand would really like to thanks his parents and coaches for theirsupport and encouragement throughout the years and evenwhen he was injured. Best of luck to Tyler in his last OutdoorTrack Season and the rest of the Warriors.

IT’S ABOUT THE KIDS
If you sit at School Board meetings, you will hear the cry,
“Its about the kids.” Wrong. It is not about the kids. It isonly about the kids. It is about their education, growth,
and most importantly, their future. Every program we
provide, every opportunity we give them has a price tag,and they are adding up. The United States currently spends
over half a trillion dollars every year on public education,
and before we spend another penny, I think it is time tofind out if it is being spent wisely. Is our children’s education
worth the bankruptcy of our nation? What will they do with
their degrees if our country is devoid of economic stability? Will they appreciate being able to beg for change in 3
languages, or would they rather you’d given them RosettaStone and maintained some little bit of the economic
superiority that we take for granted? Will they cherish the
fingerpainting they mastered, or that we taught themholding a balance on a credit card is probably a terrible
idea? Will they thank you for this in the future, or will they
curse you? When you vote on May 15th remember thatyou are mortgaging their futures just to give them more
childhood “opportunities,” and taking from them the
prospects they will have later on in life. I urge you to voteno on a 3.95% budget, and help our community maintain
some level of financial solvency.

ATTENTION: All residents of theAverill Park Central School District
State school aid has been cut drastically over the past 3 years. While costscontinue to skyrocket for things like healthcare, insurance, and heating, ourdistrict has had to “give back” over $10 million in the last 3 years. APCSDhas been forced to deplete its reserves, make deep cuts, and raise taxes totry and maintain the high quality education for which Averill Park schools areknown. Many teachers pay for supplies out of their own pockets.
If we don’t support and pass this budget, severe cuts will be made and thequality of Averill Park schools will decline. The value of Averill Park homeswill also decline.
Averill Park school district voters - the decision is yours.Make yourselves heard on May 15, 2012.

This year has been particularly challenging. APCSD has reduced its budgetby $1.5 million by making deep and painful cuts. Staffing is being reducedby 34 people. Cuts have been made in academics, arts, athletics, andadministration/support. To avoid even deeper cuts, our school system needsan additional $1 million in the form of the 3.95% tax increase. For a typical$175,000 home in the district, the increase will be about $8 per month(senior citizens participating in the Enhanced STAR deduction would seeabout a $6 per month increase).
