FUNDING TO SUPPORT
IMPROVED GRAZING
MANAGEMENTLivestock farmers in Albany, Columbia,
Greene,Schenectady, Rensselaer, and MontgomeryCounties have an
opportunity to apply forfinancial assistance to establish or
improvegrazing systems on their farms. This project is
in its second year of implementation through the
CooperativeConservation Partnership Initiative (CCPI) that was
authorizedin the 2008 Farm Bill. In partnership with the Hudson
MohawkResource Conservation and Development (RC&D) Council,NRCS
offers farmers the opportunity to apply for conservationpractices
that will protect soil and improve water quality ongrazing, lands.
The effort will be funded through theEnvironmental Quality
Incentives Program (EQIP).Landowners within the 6 county areas can
apply for the EQIPCCPI at their local USDA-NRCS office. In order to
be eligible, landowners must have an existing rotational grazing
planmeeting NRCS standards or completed PGM worksheets,
haveestablished property records and complete eligibil
ityrequirements at their local USDA Service Center. The programis
competitive, and applications are ranked based on national, state
and local identified resource priorities and their overallbenefit
to the environment. All applications must be receivedby the local
USDA NRCS office no later than April 29, 2011 tobe considered for
this special funding. For more information,or to submit an

DONATE BOOKS TO HELP ORPHANSPlease donate used hardcover books!
We are 7 & 9 years oldand have set a goal to raise $600 to help
orphans in Kenyaand Bangladesh. Old or unusual books are best, but
wellaccept any hardcover books. There are two ways to donate: 1.
Please take your used hardcover books to BrunswickChurch - 42 White
Church Lane, Troy NY 12182. 2. Or, if you have a large amount of
books, well pick them upat your place. E-mail us at
[email protected] toarrange a time for us to come get them.
We will sell the bookson-line and through BookCylcer.org. All
proceeds will bedonated to help orphans. A team of local
professionals isgoing to Kibera, Kenya in May, to work with some of
theneediest people in the world. Our goal is to send $600 withthem.
But, if it takes us longer than May to meet our goal, well keep
trying. In that case, well send some money withthem in May, and
well send the remaining money later on tothe two orphanages our
church helps support in Kenya andBangladesh. ~Thanks for your
generosity! Adam & Jackie

RESTRICTIONS ON FUNERAL PROTESTS IN
RENSSELAER COUNTYRensselaer County Executive Kathleen M. Jimino
has submitteda local law to the County Legislature that would
prevent thedisruption of funeral related events. The law aims to
protectthe privacy of grieving families by prohibiting any protests
ordemonstrations within 750 feet of the service for a time
periodspanning from one hour before the service to one hour
followingthe commencement of the services.I am confident that this
law will protect the rights of thosegrieving the loss of their
loved one, said Rensselaer CountyExecutive Kathleen M. Jimino.
While it pains me to think thatanyone could be so disrespectful as
to demonstrate at a funeralwe have seen this shameful behavior
occur time after timeacross the nation making it extremely
important that we takethis local action.Recently the United States
Supreme Court ruled that theprotests and demonstrations that have
occurred outside ofmilitary funerals and burials were protected
under theconstitution. However, the Court also ruled that
localgovernments could place reasonable restrictions on
thosedemonstrations or protests. The Countys local law if approved
by the County Legislaturewould allow law enforcement to charge
those in violation of thestatue with a misdemeanor when if
convicted would carry apunishment of up to a $1,000 fine and/or
imprisonment of up toone year.

speakers at thePoestenkill Historical Societys April 26th program
on Harnessingthe Barberville Falls. Chuck has studied the
Barberville Fallsand will be presenting a program on the history of
the falls.Tom, who lives on Plank Road, has harnessed the power
madefrom the falls with water turbines and uses the power
itgenerates in both his home and sawmill. The Hohman WaterTurbine
Project is an example of how this form of powertransmission
operates two distinct applications along thePoestenkill Creek.By
using a natural head of water providedby the Barberville Falls, Tom
has designed, installed and isoperating a 12KW water
turbine/generator system. Tomssystem uses the natural flow of the
Creek to direct waterpower to a turbine, then reintroduces the
water back into theCreek in an eco-friendy manner. Tom and Chucks

SPRING CLEANING LISTSPRING CLEANING LISTSPRING CLEANING
LISTSPRING CLEANING LISTSPRING CLEANING LIST(NAPSA)-The changing
seasons are a reminder that its time tocheck around the house to
make sure things are operatingproperly and safely. Here are 10
often overlooked tasks toadd to your home spring cleaning
list.1.Defrost the freezer: Ice buildup makes freezers less
ef-ficient and takes up space. Throw away out-of-date or
food.2.Update the first-aid kit: Replace missing supplies andupdate
emergency contact information, including the poisoncontrol
center.3.Donate old clothes: Clean out closets and take
unusedclothes to a clothing donation center.4.Clean up the
computer: Delete old files and e-mails,organize documents and
photos into folders and run a virusscan.5.Clean the chimney: Hire a
chimney sweep to clear theflue and perform an inspection.6.Caulk
and weather strip: Keep rain from seeping in andcooled or heated
air from seeping out by caulking aroundwindows and doors.7.Drain
the hot water heater: Check for rust and removesediment that may
have collected at the bottom of your hotwater heater.8.Call the
termite inspector: Termites establish new colo-nies every spring,
so get a professional inspection of yourhome.9.Review your family
emergency plan: Have an estab-lished plan in case of fire or other
emergency. Make surewindows and other escapes are easy to open from
the inside.10. Check batteries: There are 21 battery-operated
de-vices in the average home-from flashlights to smoke detec-tors
to cordless phones. Test each device and replace thebatteries with
fresh ones. According to the U.S. ConsumerProduct Safety
Commission, about 3,000 people in the UnitedStates lose their lives
in residential fires every year. You shouldtest smoke alarms once a
month and change the batteriesinside at least twice a year. Also
replace smoke alarm batter-ies if the detector emits a warning
sound, such as chirping orbeeping. Make sure theres at least one
working smoke alarmon every level of your home, particularly inside
or near sleep-ing areas. For more information,
visitwww.interstatebatteries.com.
