What are Adverbs?

ADVERBS

- are words that modifya verb (He drove slowly. — How did he drive?)

an adjective (He drove a very fast car. — How fast was his car?)

another adverb (She moved quite slowly down the aisle. — How slowly did she move?)

- As we will see, adverbs often tell when, where, why, or under what conditions something happens or happened.

Examples:

I quickly ate my lunch.

Quickly is the adverb in this sentence because it describes how I ate my lunch.

Examples:

Soon she displayed her work.

Soon is the adverb in this sentence because it describes when she displayed her work.

There is the adverb in this sentence because it describes where his keys were hung.

Commonly adverbs are formed from adjectives. Some are below.

Many adverbs end with -ly. You make these adverbs by adding -ly to adjectives.

Some words athat end in -ly are not adverbs. Some adjectives end in -ly too.

For Example:- 1.Sam was feeling very lonely. 2.She was wearing a lovely dress. 3.It was a very lively party

It describes in which manner an action is done.

It describes where an action is done.

It describes when an action is done.

It shows how many times an action is done.

He was driving carelessly.The plane landed safely.Ramu plays the guitar skillfully.

Adverbs of Manner: Some adverbs and adverb phrases describe the way people do things.It answer the question “how”.

Formation of AdverbsMost adverbs are formed by adding -ly to their corresponding adjectives. Examples are: kindly (kind), slowly (slow), hardly (hard), sweetly (sweet) etc.She is very beautiful (adjective).

She is beautifully (adverb) dressed.

He is a strange (adjective) person.

He behaved strangely (adverb).

Points to be noted1. If the adjective ends in -y, replace it with -i and then add -ly.Adjective Adverb

2. If the adjective ends in -able, -ible, or -le, replace the -e with -y.

3. If the adjective ends in -ic, add -ally.

This rule, however, has an exception. The adverb formed from public is publicly, and not publically.
