I have taken the class and made the jeans with excellent fit and ease of assembly with Judy’s guidance and humor. Please remember that we have a large county and are somewhat limited on where we can hold events. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Dog days of summer are fast approaching with the scent of fall in the air not far behind. Soon it will be the
start of the holiday season and gift sewing will be our focus….but I get ahead of myself.
I have just returned from the National Convention, attended some great classes and did my fair share of
spending in the vender’s hall…. YES, it is true San Diego will be the host city for the 2015 ASG National
Convention, to be held at the Town and Country Convention Center in Mission Valley. Although no further
information is available at this time, your CAB and I will keep you posted.
All of the attendees at Gail Yellen’s truck show and workshop were excited to see her wonderful designs and
inspired by the techniques she taught at her workshop. Unfortunately we had a very low turnout of members
which in turn increased the cost that was covered by the chapter. Our chapter and what you get from your
membership is enhanced by your participation. So we are changing our approach in regards to what type of
programs the Chapter will present next year.
Mark your calendars
September 14th and 21st September is National Sewing Month and we are marking the occasion with three
“Open House” events at the Encinitas, Poway and El Cajon libraries. Our Carlsbad NG has done this for sev-
eral years and has enjoyed the day and always welcomed new members. Details will be discussed at your NG
and I hope to see many of you there at these events.
October 26th October is our annual meeting and we have an exciting agenda planned. In addition to the
Denim Challenge, we will have a speaker from the garment industry and a sponsor of ASG’s National Con-
ference. Bring your creativity and sense of adventure for this new and exciting presentation. Once again I
hope you all can join me as it should be an inspiring day.
November 16th
In November we are teaming with Jinny Hoffman of Paradise Quilting as she brings back the ever popular
Judy Kessinger. Many of us have taken Judy’s tee top and pant classes and have been thrilled with the fit and
ease of sewing the garments. Now you have the opportunity to sign up for her Jean Class!!!! I have taken the
class and made the jeans with excellent fit and ease of assembly with Judy’s guidance and humor.
Please remember that we have a large county and are somewhat limited on where we can hold events. If an

MEET THE 2014 SLATE OF CANDIDATES FOR THE CAB
POSITION: CHAPTER PRESIDENT
NAME: JACKIE CRUZ
BIO: I must be getting old as the last year has flown by….. Being your ASG
President has presented me with a learning curve that has had it challenges.
Most important. I have met many of you face to face at NG meetings and our
annual events. That has been a wonderful benefit of the “Job”. This past year
has made me dust off the sewing machine and really get back to sewing. My
garment production is picking up providing me with some show and tell items
to bring to the meetings.
As I mentioned last year, I was a sideline member of ASG for many years.
Accepting the President’s role is like diving into the deep end of the pool and I
realized just how much I had missed by not being more involved. I encourage
you to join the chapter in one more event than you did last year. I promise you
will benefit with increased creativity and new or renewed friendships with a
sewing sister.
If you chose to re-elect me as President I welcome your input and suggestions,
my email door is always open.
POSITION: TREASURER
NAME: JACKIE MC DONALD
BIO: I have been a member of ASG for almost 7 years. I’m semi-
retired from various careers - home closet, office designer for 5
years and 6 years as an Office Manager.
My love of sewing started when I was 10 years old. I have been
sewing for almost 50 years. Machine embroidery found its way into
my house 5 years ago.
After becoming a member of ASG, I have found many new inter-
ests in sewing, heirloom, quilting and others.
September/October 2013 3
MEET THE 2014 SLATE OF CANDIDATES FOR THE CAB
POSITION: VICE PRESIDENT—MEMBERSHIP
NAME: PHYLLIS LEWCOCK
BIO: I was born and raised in Minneapolis, MN. My mother taught me to
sew when I was a girl, and for years I loved making doll clothes. I sewed
many of my own clothes in high school. I am married and have a son and a
daughter. My husband's job brought us to Sunnyvale, CA in 1977. I was a
busy volunteer mom while our kids were growing up, and my sewing mainly
consisted of patching and mending. I worked as an elementary school teacher
until I retired in 2003. We moved to the Placerville, CA area, and I joined the
wonderful ASG chapter there. I discovered that sewing and sharing with ASG
friends was so much FUN! In 2006 when we moved to Carlsbad, one of the
first things I did was find an ASG meeting to attend. I continue to learn
from and enjoy ASG activities, and look forward to being Vice President—
Membership for the San Diego chapter.
POSITION: SECRETARY
NAME: LUANN GOEDERT
BIO: During my basic budgeting in the college years, I’d window browse,
see something I liked, then walk down the Mission Valley mall to House of
Fabrics to purchase the fabric. I felt like I’d won a prize when I’d make
something for one third the cost of the original. I always enjoy selecting my
own colors and getting the fit the way I like it.
After realizing that I did not enjoy my selected major it was easy to switch to
one for which I had a passion—Home Economics (now called Family and
Consumer Science). After graduating from San Diego State, with a degree in
Secondary Education, I was hired by the Carlsbad school district. Thirty-six
years after filling the position as ‘home economics’ teacher, where I had lots
of fun, a bit of stress, but, mostly, many wonderful students and good life-
time memories, I joined the retirement group. I’ve had the most passion with
the creative needle arts and sewing classes. ASG keeps me connected with
others who continue to inspire and motivate me to get those projects com-
pleted so I can race to start a new one.
WHY DO I NEED TO VOTE IF THERE’S ONLY ONE PERSON ON THE BALLOT?
Have you asked yourself this question? As in our national election, every vote is important. The
by-laws require that a minimum of 15% of the membership must return their ballots for the election to be ratified. If we do not achieve
the 15%, the election is null and void and we must have a re-vote. It is so much easier if everyone just fills out their ballot and mails it to
the Nominating and Election Coordinator, Patricia Limber. Mail-in ballots must be signed and have your membership number.
Your membership number is on your membership card.
The ballot is found on page 7. Just remove pages 5 (meeting registration) and page 7, (proxy ballot) fill them out, fold as indicated, sign
and mail. You can also vote in person at the Election meeting, October 26, 2013. However, to ensure that your ballot will be counted,
mail it in. Your proxy ballot must be postmarked by October 15, 2013.
Accessing the Members Only Area of ASG.org There are wonderful links and offers on the ASG National Web Site that should not be missed. Not everything is published in the quarterly magazine NOTIONS magazine and your CAB wants to be sure you understand the difference between ASG.org and sandiegoasg.org. ASG.org is the national site of the American Sewing Guild while sandiegoasg.org is our local chapter’s web site. Visit them both and become acquainted with the informa-tion posted at both locations. From the ASG.org office we received the following infor-mation. We are pleased to announce that our new log-in system on the Members Only area of the ASG website is now available. The site information remains the same; we have simply given each member personalized access to the
Members Only area. This area is for the exclusive use of ASG members and requires access with a
username and password. Please note the following: The old log-in of Username: sewing / Password: friends will no longer work to get you into the site. The new login page looks like this:
If you have PREVIOUSLY accessed the recently-launched member database and set a unique pass-
word for yourself, this is the information you will use for the Members Only area of the ASG website. Not sure of the email ASG has on file? Call Retha (our membership chair) at 760 749-4242 and she will provide it for you.
When you click any Members Only link, simply use your email address (the one associated with your -ASG membership) and your unique password. Once you access in this fashion you can begin access- ing the Members Only area. From then on you will use your email and unique password to access the site.
If you have NEVER accessed the recently launched member database, please log-in with your email address (the one associated with your ASG membership) and use the following password: Test. (Capital T and no period after the word Test.) You will be prompted to set up your unique password and begin accessing the Members Only area.

Fall is the perfect time to construct a new jacket! In our upcoming fall webinars, we'll have four "follow-along" ses-
sions where you can completely construct a lined jacket totally by machine! This includes putting in shoulder pads,
sleeve headers, hemming and even sewing shank buttons on by machine. Register now for these upcoming webinars
and join in the fun of creating.
Upcoming Educational Webinars
Sep 17: ASG Online! Getting the most from your ASG membership
Do you really know all that is included in your ASG membership? Are you taking advantage of all there is? This
session will show some of the many benefits and how you may access them.
Sep 12: Let's Talk Lined Jacket Construction (1 of 4 sessions)
For the month of October, all the webinars will feature a sew-along series with Ramona.
This session will be in preparation for those classes. For the sessions we will be using a lined blazer with a lapel
(you may use a similar pattern that you already have). Discussion will be on how to choose the fabric, interfacing
and notions for the lined jacket. Three sessions in October will be the constructions methods she developed from
studying ready-to-wear techniques to complete the lined jacket.
Sep 19: Let's Talk Cuffs and Collars
Do the undersides of cuffs and collars on garments peek out? Do the curves seem less than smooth? Have you
learned how to add piping? In this webinar learn some simple tricks to give you professional results.
Oct 3: ASG Online! Gift Giving Ideas
The clever folks at Clover have some fun tools on the market to make great gifts. We’ll take a look at three of them
and projects that may be made.
Oct 10: Let’s Talk Lined Jacket Construction Session 2 of 4
This session will be layout and cutting of the jacket and lining. Techniques for matching plaids will be discussed.
The interfacing will be applied and tips on pressing during the construction will be given.
Oct 17: Let’s Talk Lined Jacket Construction Session 3 of 4
Jacket construction will begin. All construction will take place on the sewing machine… absolutely no hand sewing
with these RTW (ready to wear) techniques! This session will include setting the sleeves, sewing in the sleeve head-
ers and shoulder pads (yes, by machine!), and discussion of buttonholes will begin.
Oct 31: Let’s Talk Lined Jacket Construction Session 4 of 4
If you have followed along and done the sewing between sessions, by the end of this session you will have a
completed, lined jacket, in just a few more hours of sewing after viewing this session which includes lining con-

Using the correct needle for your threads is as important as having correct tension settings. If too small a needle is used, the thread may fray, shred, or break. There's not too many things more frustrating than having your top thread break constantly. How do you know what size of needle to use with a particular thread? We've made it easy for you with our Thread Reference Guides, available for both Home and Longarm machines. Within the Thread Reference Guides, you will find information on the proper needle size, recommended bobbin thread, and recommended tension settings for all our threads. By following these three recommendations, you will have success. When a thread is shredding or breaking on your machine, find the point where it is occurring. It will probably be at the needle or just after the tension disc area. If the problem is at the needle, change the needle to the next size larger. The most common reason why thread shreds, frays, or breaks at the needle is because the eye is too small to accommodate the thread, causing stress and friction, which results in shredding or breaking the top thread. As an additional safeguard to eliminate thread shredding or breaking, we use and recommend Superior Topstitch Nee-dles. The Topstitch needle has an elongated eye which is nearly twice as long as the eye in most other needle styles (see photo below). This extra space allows the top thread more room to move and thereby alleviate extra stress placed on the top thread.
If you follow Superior's Thread Reference Guide and match the correct needle size to the thickness (weight) of your top thread, you will find more joy in sewing, quilting, & embroidery due to less thread breakage and better stitch-ing capabilities.
