Construction began in April 2006 on the 16 acres where the Twin Towers

once stood. Part of the new construction is for a Memorial that honors those

who died on September 11th. The new Memorial is located on the site of

the Twin Towers. The new site will feature a tree-lined Memorial park and

a Museum Building, plus several new skyscrapers. The 9/11 Memorial has

two reflecting pools with waterfalls. The names of those who died during

the 2001 attack are carved on the walls around the pools. Also included are

the names of those who died in a 1993 attack on the Twin Towers. Nearly

3,000 victims are honored.

A 9/11 Museum is still under construction. The Museum will open in

2012. It will include a special room for the families of the victims, where

they can meet to remember their loved ones. The Museum will have

scraps of the former Twin Tower buildings. One of those scrap pieces is

the “Survivor Stairs,” which people used to escape the burning buildings.

Visitors can also see parts of the original building foundations of the Twin

Towers. Pictures and stories of every victim can be seen on the “Wall of

Faces.” Museum visitors will feel the great loss suffered by every family.

When it is completed, the new World Trade Center site will once

again be the center of business activity in New York City. Construction

continues on fi ve new skyscrapers. The centerpiece of the activity is a

new offi ce building, One World Trade Center. (The building was once

called the Freedom Tower.) When that building is completed in 2014,

it will be the tallest building in the United States, at 1,776 feet. One

World Trade Center will join the other great buildings on the New York

City skyline. But no New Yorker, and no American, will ever forget the

beautiful Twin Towers.

Some people wanted to help Americans remember the attacks in

2001. Two retired police offi cers came up with an idea: a 9/11 Traveling

Memorial. In 2002, they

put together an exhibit

of articles from the Twin

Towers’ site. They traveled

with their 9/11 Memorial in

a motor home. They travel

all over the country sharing

this unique exhibit about this day in America’s history. Their tour will end

on September 11, 2011 in New York City. The contents of the Traveling

Memorial will be donated to the 9/11 Museum. The tenth anniversary of

the September 11 attacks is a special time for all Americans. Perhaps

you can visit the Traveling Memorial. Or perhaps you can visit the new

Memorial in New York City. Wherever you are, take a moment and

remember those who died in the attacks and the fi rst responders who

tried to save them. Remember that the spirit of America will never die.
