What can I study?There are three programmes of study available at the Advanced Technology Centre. If you are a high achieving student, aged 16 -18, aspiring to a technical career and want an alternative to the traditional school and typical A level pathway, the ATC gives you the option of studying a Technical Baccalaureate or Aiming Higher Programme, which mixes specialist vocational subjects with A levels from any of the STEAM subjects. If you are an adult who would like to progress into Higher Education and study for a degree, the Access to Higher Education qualification is perfect for you as it offers an innovative portfolio of high quality and cutting edge courses to prepare you for successful entry to Higher Education.

Technical Baccalaureate Suitable for young people aged 16 – 18

The Tech Bacc provides bright young people with a first-class alternative to the more traditional A level route, ensuring they have the technical ability employers want, and giving Britain the skilled workforce it needs to compete in the global race. This new technical qualification – designed in partnership with and endorsed by industry, ensures learners gain future proof skills employers need. UCAS points apply at Level 3 to enable progression to university. This new gold standard curriculum has been designed to give young people the technical and professional skills needed to progress onto an apprenticeship, into university or into the modern jobs market.

The Tech Bacc consists of: A high-quality Level 3 vocational qualification

recognised by employers

Level 3 Mathematics qualification (Core Mathematics or A Level Mathematics)

The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) which will develop and test students’ skills in extended writing, communication, research, self-discipline and self-motivation.

Aiming Higher ProgrammeSuitable for young people aged 16 – 18

An alternative to a Tech Bacc, equivalent to four A levels, this unique route to your chosen career allows you to choose elements of vocational diplomas - 6, 9, 12 or 18 Units and study them alongside A levels.

Within the Aiming Higher Programme we offer a four A level programme for students with minimum five A*- B including English and Mathematics. In Year Two you can also study the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) which is worth extra UCAS points. You will also receive guidance from a curriculum mentor who will work with you to develop a personalised study programme to suit your needs.

The Aiming Higher Programme consists of: A high-quality Level 3 vocational qualification

recognised by employers

Level 3 Mathematics qualification (Core Mathematics or AS Level Mathematics) or a relevant A level to your chosen course

Access to Higher Education Suitable for adults who want re-introduction to education

Bradford College was one of the first providers in the country to offer the nationally recognised Diploma in Access to Higher Education. Access courses act as a re-introduction to education and lead to Level 3 university entry qualifications. These programmes are perfect for people who have been out of education since leaving school and would now like to progress to Higher Education and study for a degree. All of our courses are nationally recognised qualifications which are accepted by Higher Education Institutions. You may wish to go on to study for a degree that also involves professional training such as Teaching, Social Work, Nursing or Midwifery. These are nationally-recognised qualifications that are accepted by Higher Education Institutions. You may choose to go on to study for a degree that also involves professional training.

Our Access to HE programmes are validated by Cambridge Access Validating Agency and are introduced for adults. Adults aged over 24 are able to access the 24+ Loan Facility. The one year Level 3 Access to HE Diplomas provide a broad-based experience if you wish to enter a range of Higher Education courses in the subject you choose to study. This course will be the start of an exciting career journey for you.

Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)What is the EPQ?If you choose to study the Aiming Higher Programme or Technical Baccalaureate with Bradford College, you will have the opportunity to study the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) which, on successful completion, will give you additional UCAS points to count towards your chance of getting into a highly regarded university. The EPQ is equivalent to an AS Level and this qualification is an excellent introduction to many of the skills you will require as you move into Higher Education.

What does the EPQ include?The EPQ will enable you to research and study an area of interest in greater depth, develop the skills that will help your transition to Higher Education and the workplace and attain further UCAS points. The EPQ will provide you with the opportunity to develop critical, reflective, problem-solving and independent learning skills through the planning, research and evaluation of a self-selected project.

The EPQ will help you Design, plan and complete an individual or group

project in order to meet stated objectives

Analyse data for a specific topic using a range of sources and information

Learn how to solve problems, creatively and flexibly using a range of technologies

Evaluate and present evidenced outcomes.

Health Studies Level 3 Extended DiplomaSuitable for young people aged 16 – 18

Duration: Two years

Attendance: Full-time

This unique course combines theoretical study and vocational practice in a variety of settings. A level 3 qualification is a recognised route into university so if you want to progress onto Higher Education and study courses such as:

•• Nursing•• Midwifery•• Radiography or other health-related degrees.

In the September 2014 Ofsted inspection, our Health and Social Care provision was judged to be ‘Grade 1 Outstanding’.

Health and Care work is available in all parts of the UK with numerous employers including: the NHS, private sector healthcare providers, local authorities, private residential and nursing care homes, hospices, private hospitals and nursing agencies. The majority of careers in this area involve working with people and you must therefore have a good range of social skills. Careers in this field involve hard work and long hours but are also very rewarding and provide varied opportunities for career development. Our courses are designed to expand your theoretical knowledge and improve your confidence whilst providing you with the varied skills that are required by Health and Care professionals. You will undertake work placements in settings including: hospitals, residential care homes, youth centres, community projects, schools and pre-school settings to help you develop practical skills and build your knowledge.

On successful completion of the qualification, you will achieve: •• A level 3 Extended Diploma in Health Science

Applied Science Level 3 Extended DiplomaSuitable for young people aged 16 – 18

Duration: One year

Attendance: Full-time

Science plays a key role in almost all areas of modern life, from the development of new materials through to laboratory research and the discovery of new cures for old diseases. This qualification will provide you with the knowledge and understanding needed to pursue an exciting and prosperous career. Whether you want to gain a new qualification or progress to further study, our classroom sessions and practical activities will allow you to develop skills that are highly valued by employers and universities alike.

This course can lead to a wide range of exciting careers in very diverse fields of science including: Forensic Science, Medical Science, Biology, Chemistry or Physics.

This route to your chosen career allows you to choose Units and study them alongside A levels.

This unique course combines theoretical study and vocational practice in a variety of settings.

The Applied Science Level 3 course will give you the essential knowledge all scientists need and you will undertake a wide range of exciting practical assignments in newly furbished laboratories and workshop rooms. You will take part in practical investigations and visits to science-based companies.

The Applied Science pathway may allow you to progress to a degree such as:•• Pharmacy•• Physiotherapy or another Science degree with a

Chemistry or Biology focus.

Sports & Exercise Science Extended Diploma Level 3 Suitable for young people aged 16 – 18

Duration: Two years

Attendance: Full-time

Our Sport, Exercise and Fitness courses guarantee high performance and provide all the support you need to secure employment within one of the fastest growing industries in the country. Employment within the sports and fitness industry involves working with a cross-section of the community and with people of all ages and abilities in a variety of settings. This requires workers to be hard working, dedicated, enthusiastic, knowledgeable and well trained.

If you have these attributes, Bradford College will help you build a career in the industry. Our courses are delivered in a variety of state-of-the-art facilities. The College has developed successful partnerships with major sporting and fitness clubs to offer Further Education Sports Academies in a number of popular sports.

By combining the BTEC Level 3 Diploma with AS and A2 Biology, you will have access to degrees and careers that would not usually be accessible solely through a BTEC route.

Units available: Anatomy for Sport and Exercise, Sport and Exercise Physiology, Sport and Exercise Psychology, Research Methods for Sport and Exercise, Research Project for Sport and Exercise, Sports Nutrition, Sport Biomechanics in Action, Exercise, Health and Lifestyle, Fitness Testing, Sports Injuries, Sports Massage and Fitness Training.

Access to HE Sciences Suitable for people aged 19 and over

Duration: One year

Attendance: Full-time

If you have few or no formal qualifications and want to work in the Healthcare professions such as Midwifery, Nursing or Paramedics (but excluding Medicine and Veterinary), this course will be the start of an exciting journey for you.

The one year Level 3 Access to HE Diploma Sciences pathway provides a broad-based experience if you wish to enter a range of Higher Education courses in the life science and Chemistry subjects. You will study Biology and Chemistry Modules.

This pathway may allow progression to a degree in:

•• Biomedical Science•• Clinical Science•• Forensic Science•• Pharmacy

When applying to join an Access to HE course, please stipulate on the application form that you require the Sciences pathway.

Access to Higher Education Entry RequirementsYou must have GCSEs at a minimum of Grade C in English, Mathematics and a Double Science at Grade CC or a willingness to undertake these qualifications as part of you programme of study. You will be interviewed and will need to bring your portfolio/folder of art, media or design-related work.

Technical Baccalaureate in Games Development Level 3Suitable for young people aged 16 – 18

Duration: Two years

Attendance: Full-time

If you are ambitious, talented and want to pursue a career in the Games Development field, the Technical Baccalaureate (Tech Bacc) in Games Development is aimed at you. This innovative course prepares you for work in the games industry or progression on to university. You will follow the full production pipeline to create 3D models, 3D animation and implement these into game engines to develop a fully playable game. It will give you the opportunity to be stretched, through high quality and rigorous qualifications, and to demonstrate your personal best.

Units available: 3D Modelling, 3D Animation, 3D Environments, Games Engines, Games Design, Flash for Computer Games, Research Techniques, Media Skills Workshop and Production Management.

Technical Baccalaureate in Software DevelopmentSuitable for young people aged 16 – 18

Duration: Two years

Attendance: Full-time

This new and exciting course will equip you with the skills to create imaginative software applications including apps for Android and IOS devices. You will be taught a range of different programming languages that are widely sought after in both the IT industry and at universities.

This course will introduce you to the basic concepts of programming and guide you through the whole software development process.

The course is made up of the following six Mandatory Units and a further 12 Optional Units:•• Communication and Employability Skills for IT•• Computer Systems•• Information Systems•• Software Design and Development•• Systems Analysis and Design•• Event Driven Programming.

Diploma in Digital Learning Design (QCF) Level 4Suitable for people aged 19 and over

Duration: One year

Attendance: Full-time

A one-year course that covers all aspects of developing electronic resources and the e-learning industry. The content is delivered through focused projects and develops skills and knowledge for this emerging role within industry, schools and universities.

The UK has the largest e-learning industry in the EU, generating over £540 million annually. The future of education and training is digital and the roles of Learning Technologist, Digital Learning Designer, Instructional Designer and VLE Manager are expanding in industry and the education sector. This course will cut across education, art and computer specialisms to develop your skills in project lifecycles, managing learning environments and creating a wide range of digital resources.

Modules include: Project Lifecycles, Assessment Design, Managing Learning Environments, Safe Online Use, Video Production, Personal Professional Development, Communication, User Experience, Science of Learning, Gamification and Access to HE (Education and IT).

To apply you ideally have one of the following:•• Completed A levels or Level 3 qualifications and

want to proceed onto a Level 4 course•• Completed an Education, Arts or Computing

degree and want a specialist diploma in digital resource design

•• School, college or private company staff who are tasked with designing digital learning resource.

Access to HE Games DevelopmentSuitable for people aged 19 and over

Duration: One year

Attendance: Full-time

The Access to Higher Education (HE) Games Development programme is designed to provide an alternative to A levels or BTEC for mature students wishing to progress to games based HE provision. On completion of the course, you will develop an understanding and an in-depth knowledge of Modelling and Animation and will be fully prepared to study a Higher Education course with significant Creative Media and Games Development content.

You will develop critical thinking and analytical skills and the ability to research, plan and carry out practical investigation.

The development of practical skills in Games Design is a key feature of the programme and you will be expected to undertake a research project to demonstrate application of these skills. The course runs full-time over three days per week. Units include:

Access to HE ComputingSuitable for people aged 19 and over

Duration: One year

Attendance: Full-time

The Access to Higher Education (HE) Computing programme is designed to provide an alternative to A levels or BTEC for mature students wishing to progress to Computing based HE Provision. On completion of the course, you will be fully prepared to study a Higher Education course with a significant computing content.

The development of practical skills in computing is a key feature of the programme and you will be expected to undertake a research project to demonstrate application for these skills. The course runs full-time over three days per week.

Duration: One year

Attendance: Full-time

The Access to Higher Education (HE) Engineering programme is designed to provide an alternative to A levels or BTEC, or for mature students wishing to progress to Engineering based HE Provision. On completion of the course, you will be fully prepared to study a Higher Education course with a significant Engineering content.

The development of practical skills in Engineering is a key feature of the programme and you will be expected to undertake a research project to demonstrate application of these skills. You will gain an in-depth Engineering knowledge, skills and understanding. Also you will develop critical thinking and analytical skills and the ability to research, plan and carry out practical investigation.

The course runs full-time over three days per week.

This course explores how objects and artefacts of all kinds help shape our world, and how social and cultural factors influence design decisions.

You will develop both design studio and workshop based skills, and understand the latest manufacturing processes and design techniques. You will develop the technical skills you need to produce high quality prototypes and will see, learn and develop the necessary software skills. To succeed you should be aware of current trends in Product Design.

You will experience project briefs supported through demonstrations, tutorials and experience of the ‘real world’.
