Laboratory for Chemical Analysis

Objective: Verifying the suitability of coating materials for hydraulic steel structures and test construction materials as well as analysing damages.

Equipment: Infra-red spectroscopy (FTIR), headspace gas chromatography (HS-GC), thermal analysis, atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS), incident light microscopy

Shallow Water Ship Basin

Objective: Studying the interaction of seagoing ships and tidal fairways, enabling predictions of ship-induced loading in tidal fairways as well as manoeuvre attempts in shallow water

Ship Handling Simulator

Objective: Training of nautical personnel on seagoing ships

Equipment: Full mission bridge simulator with radar displays, electronic nautical chart system and autopilot; propulsion control levers with: traditional rudder wheel, engine lever and engines; visualization system

Survey Boat

Objective: Flow velocity and discharge measurements, water level measurements, longitudinal and transverse soundings, determination of waterway bed roughness, studies of the waterway bed using an underwater camera

Equipment: Echo sounders, acoustic Doppler current profiler, GPS, crane, various probes, sensors and other measuring instruments

Objective: Hydraulic and morphological investigations in free-flowing rivers Investigation and assessment of weirs, locks, groynes and other hydraulic structures

Equipment: Large-scale models of river or building structures which enable studies of flows during different discharge situations

Test Channel for Hydraulic Engineering Structures

Objective: Nature-like studying of flow separation processes, ingress of air, energy dissipation or vibration behaviour

Equipment: Magnetic inductive flow sensor, electrically controllable outlet flap, water level measuring station, modular measuring frame

High-performance Computers

Objective: Working with mathematical models which are not possible or which would not be appropriate to run on PCs

Equipment: There are a total of three high-performance computers (HPCs) at the Karlsruhe and Hamburg locations. This guarantees a high level of availability as any HPC functions which fail can be temporarily taken over by the other HPCs. Together the 3 HPCs theoretically provide total capacity of over 280 TFlops.
