All exercises are written as one-measure patterns with two basic bass drum variations. All snare drum patterns shouldbe played with a 2-and-4 backbeat feel. Note that the left hand non-accents are not written as ghost strokes, but shouldbe played at a lower volume than your natural volume.

Practice Variations for Your Right Hand:1 Play your right hand as written on the hi-hat.2. Play your right hand on the ride cymbal.3. Play your right hand on the cowbell.
In this chapter, the right and left hands play more freely. The two-beat phrases with both hands make for greatfunk grooves. There are 24 different bass drum variations, from basic quarter-note figures to more advanced 16th-note figures.
Play all exercises with a 2-and-4 backbeat feel, then experiment by shifting the accents around with both hands.
Dynamics, ghost strokes, and a solid backbeat play a big part in making these grooves feel good. Experiment withvarious tempos, from medium slow to fast.
Practice variations for your right hand:1. Play your right hand as written on the hi-hat.2. Play your right hand on the ride cymbal.3. Play your right hand on the cowbell.4. Play your right hand on China cymbal or remote/closed hi-hat.
