Regarding the Best Sustainable Investment category, a spokesperson from
the International GreenAwardsTM, said ‘Traditional investments are not always
sustainable, thus risk models need to be realigned against a new ethical code
of conduct and transparency. This category sets out to recognise organisations
that offer investment with sustainability values incorporated.
Socially Responsible Investing (SRI) and Environmental, Social and Corporate
Governance (ESG) are not new disciplines. However, the popularity of the
sustainable investment sector is slow on the uptake, illustrated by the fact that
only a fraction of the money that is invested in traditional investments is being
invested in SRI and ESG funds.
This award will recognise leading financial services industry thinking that has
gone beyond traditional investment to make a real difference to shareholder
value – offering sustainable and financial returns.’
The focus now should be to create more sustainableinvestments and integrate these into mainstream investing.

Supply & DemandThe process undertaken in order to be issued and verified with VCS credits can be complicated and lengthy. The supply and demand differential enhances the argument that VCS prices should continue to rise and can be discussed in more detailwith an AGT representative.

CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
The evolution Corporate Social Responsibility
An increasing number of blue chip companies, global organisations and SMEs
have started to make changes to the way they operate to reduce carbon emissions.
This shift is often voluntary, with companies understanding the crucial role they play
within the global effort to tackle climate change. These changes, including
purchasing VCS credits, means not only are they on the road to becoming carbon
neutral, but also preparing for what most feel will be the inevitable legislation
to offset the majority of carbon emissions. Pre-compliance is a major factor
currently driving demand.
In 2010 HSBC was responsible for
1,017,000 tonnes of CO2 in total.
HSBC’s remaining 897,000 tonnes
of CO2 have been offset by
purchasing VER’s.
In 2010 HSBC bought VER’s from
renewable wind projects and small
scale hydro projects located in
China and India. Renewable wind
projects, small scale hydro projects.
All of the projects were, registered by
Voluntary Carbon Standard, registered
in HSBC’s VCS registry account.
Their commitment to managing our
carbon footprint focuses primarily
on minimizing the direct impact
of our operations.
In addition they offset the emissions
remaining through the purchase of
carbon credits.
The carbon credits they purchase are,
certified to Voluntary Carbon Standard,
which shows the projects genuinely
help to reduce CO2 emissions and
are both auditable and traceable.
In 2010, they purchased 1,191,956
carbon credits.
In a move to further integrate and
embed sustainability into its core
business, GSK announced a new
environmental strategy, including
the objective that the company’s
operations become carbon
neutral by 2050.

Who’s dealing in VCS VERs
The Co-op’s move to become carbon
neutral in such a short space of
time, part of a multi-pronged ethical
operations plan, means that it will
become one of the UK’s biggest
buyers of Voluntary credits.
Co-Op buys credits from the
Voluntary Carbon Standard, one of
the main industry standards in the
voluntary markets.
Land Rover’s carbon offset
programme currently has 14
emissions reduction projects in
China, approximately 45% of the
total portfolio by volume.
Land Rover also offsets 100% of
the manufacturing assembly CO2
emissions in both UK factories, where
all Land Rover products are assembled.
This is all part of their carbon
management plan.
General Motors are planning
to invest $40m to offset
around 8 million tonnes of CO2.
