As you read, you will want to make notes and highlight important passages as you read. This is called “annotating”.

Annotating includes circling, underlining or highlighting words or phrases. After you mark or annotate, remember to include a description of the mark in the margin.

You will want to mark the following items as you read:

! Characters: Mark when they are introduced, when descriptions are provided, and when changes occur within the characters

! Setting: Mark the text when setting is introduced and described.

! Symbols: Does an object in the book represent or stand for an idea? Mark those items.

! Images: Mark places in the reading when the author uses strong imagery (the author paints a picture of the scene—a strong mental image is created).

! Themes: Mark passages that define themes.

! Key words and phrases: Look for words or phrases that are repeated or emphasized.o Does the author reference other books or stories you’ve read before?

! Important quotes: Look for moments when characters reference themes or important moments in the book.

In addition to marking the text, you may also want to create an ongoing list of characters and themes in the front cover of the book. This will help you keep track of characters and events as you read.
