When players began to see diving as a means 5 … benefiting their team, they began faking injuries. 6 … data from 32 World Cup matches, researchers found 293 incidents of suspected diving. What can be done? One suggestion is to add more referees to help judge each game. Perhaps the incidents of diving could be 7 … down if divers were caught and punished more frequently. Nature’s Cheaters If you thought cheating was only human, you 1

be wrong. Animals cheat too and some do it very well. Take the cuckoo finch. Instead 2 wasting energy raising her own chicks, this mother gets someone else to raise them. How? First she identifies a suitable foster parent 3 will take care of them. Then, she lays a few of her own eggs next to those already in the nest. Amazingly, the cuckoo finch’s eggs will be 4 similar to the other eggs that the foster parent won’t notice any difference. Next, the cuckoo chicks won’t look like the other chicks, but their clever mother takes care of this problem too. 5 she does is use the same nest again and again so the foster parents think it’s normal to have chicks that look different. Finally, the cuckoo finch chicks are the first 6 hatch out of their eggs. This means that the foster parents focus all their attention 7 the little invaders, feeding them and making sure they do well. Not surprisingly, by the 8 the foster mother’s real chicks hatch, the cuckoo chicks are already fat and strong. The cuckoo finch is certainly a very clever cheat!
