I. Introduction

Advanced Assembly techniques allow the engineer to better utilize the Pro/ENGINEER tool when designing large and complex assemblies. In this tutorial, you will learn how to create and use layers, simplified reps, and component display functionality’s in order to optimize how your parts and assemblies are shown in a design environment. All three of these techniques can be used to aid the engineer in working more efficiently when the assemblies being used are large. Mastering the basic concepts introduced in the first few FroTime Advanced Assembly Tutorials is very important when moving on to the more complex functionality that is covered in the later tutorials.

II. Tutorial Lesson – Creating and Displaying Layers

** Layers in Pro/Engineer provide you with the ability to organize model objects into groups so that you can perform specific operations on them collectively. ** Terms to Know Blanked Layers – Layers that are removed from the screen. Shown Layers – Layers that are present on the screen. Isolated Layers – Layers that remain on the screen while all other layers are removed. ** To begin, open the existing part called “gear_ft”. ** • FILE menu: #File, #Open, Name:<gear_ft.prt>, #Open ** Turn on all datum planes, axes and coordinate systems by using the side menu bar or in the environmental settings. Datums can be turned on either by selecting the datum icons on the menu display or going into the Environment from the Utilities menu. **

III. Tutorial Lesson – Creating Simplified Reps ** A Simplified Representation (simplified rep) is a tool that is used to manage large assemblies in Pro/ENGINEER. Simplified reps control which objects of a users assembly are retrieved into a Pro/ENGINEER session and displayed. Multiple simplified reps for a single assembly or part can be created. Each simplified rep can correspond to a specific area of the assembly that needs to be worked on. Using simplified reps decreases regeneration, retrieval, and repaint times and makes working with large assemblies much more efficient. ** Terms To Know Master Representation – The Master Representation (Master Rep) contains the entire detailed model. It is the basis for all simplified reps. All assembly functions are applied to the Master Rep and are reflected in all other simplified reps. Open Rep – Instructs the system to load into memory and display only the components in the specified rep. Set – Sets the representation that is specified by the user as the current representation. Graphics Rep – Represents all geometry as “wireframe” only, allowing for fast retrieval times. This will open up the model but it cannot be referenced by any other part of the assembly (cannot be assembled to). Geometry Rep – Represents accurately all geometry as solid, requiring for slower retrieval times as well as memory. Will load all geometry and allow the surfaces and edges to be used as references. ** To begin, we will open an existing assembly called “motor_assy”. ** • File menu: #File, #Open, Name:<motor_assy.asm>, #Open ** Make sure to turn off all datum planes so that the assembly model will be easier to see. The motor assembly should look like the following image. **

Page 14: Advanced Assembly ProE Wildfire 1.0

AA1_WF_01 Page: 14

** We will now create a Simplified Rep called “no_cover” that will display the assembly without the front and back covers. ** • VIEW menu: #View Manager

** To add components to be removed select Edit -> Redefine, by default the Exclude components is used, which means any component you select will be removed from the assembly. If you click on Include it would only show the selected objects and all others would be automatically excluded. **

** Select both motor covers and the mounting screws that holds them to the motor housing using the model tree or by selecting directly from the graphics screen, or by selecting from the model tree. All objects that will be excluded with show as such in the added column in the model tree as shown. **

View Manager is a new addition, here you can

find: • Simplified Reps • Explode • View Orientation • Component Display

(Style)

** We will now create a Simplified Rep named “graphics_motor” which will contain a Graphics Rep of all the components with the exception of the motor housing. ** • View menu: #View Manager… ** Before you create a new simplified rep be sure to set the current rep to the Master Rep. Do this by selecting the Master Rep and right click on it selecting the Set option. Now select the New option and enter in the name of ”graphics_motor”. ** ** Select Edit -> Redefine then click on the Include tab. Choose the Graphics Rep option then select the first cover.prt from the model tree hold the shift key and select the core.prt, this will select all components but the motor.prt. Select the check the check mark to finish. **
