Naples United Church of Christ provides a wide variety of adult enrichment opportunities, benefiting the NUCC family and our community. You are invited to participate in any or all of the events contained in this brochure.

For your convenience, the material has been divided into sections, and each section organized chronologically:

Lectures/Workshops, and

Music Programs.

3Multi-Session ~ Beginning in November/December

Description: Mark, the first of our written Gospels, begins with John the Baptist and the baptism of Jesus. Matthew and Luke, writing some 10-15 years later, provide us with distinct narratives concerning the birth of Jesus. What have they added to our understanding of Jesus by composing these birth narratives? We will take a close look at the differing perspectives these Gospel writers offer us, hoping to enhance our appreciation and understanding of the story of Christmas.

Bio: Bill served as an American Baptist pastor, in both settled and interim pastorates, for some 38 years. In addition to his theological education he earned a doctorate in humanistic education and human services from the School of Education of Boston University. He is now a member of Naples UCC.

The Birth Stories as Subversive NarrativesRev. Dr. William R. Crawford, Retired American Baptist Pastor

Description: Yoga is the practice of stilling the body and quieting the mind in preparation for meditation. While it may sound foreign, meditation is the other half of prayer. It is the “be still and know that I am” practice of listening.

Bio: Shannon Danford has been teaching yoga for three years and practicing for five. She is determined to do a headstand on her 125th birthday.

Cost: $6 per session

Description: Explore a new book each month alongside other book lovers. Each session is led by a different member of the group.

Description: Men are invited to meet for coffee and conversation with Dr. Patterson on topics of current interest. Conversation is often lively, sometimes heated, but always modulated by the intersection of fact, opinion and the insights of the Christianfaith. Participants are invited to share lunch together following the meeting.

Description: Just as the men have their time to discuss the issues of the day, so too, the women are getting their chance. (See Men’s Coffee and Conversation.) In the beginning, we will challenge ourselves with the same topic discussed by the men. The group will determine whether or not to offer an optional lunch outing.

NEW! Women’s Coffee and ConversationRev. Beverly Duncan, Interim Associate Minister

Description: This class includes fifty hours of training in Christian care giving. Topics include listening skills, boundaries, feelings, assertiveness, confidentiality, the use of prayer, and ministering to people in specific situations such as divorce, terminal illness, and grief. Stephen Ministers are also trained to recognize when a care receiver’s needs go beyond the care a Stephen Minister can provide and how to refer the care receiver for additional care. At the end of training Stephen Ministers are assigned to a care receiver and meet with that person for one hour each week. Stephen Ministers also commit to attend one two hour meeting a month for continuing education and supervision.

6 Multi-Session ~ Beginning in January

Description: The class, a lay-led study of the first six chapters in the Acts of the Apostles, is based on the idea that God is still speaking to us as individuals and to the church through a thoughtful reading of the Scriptures. Participants will be asked to read the passages, do some journaling, and then participate in discussion. A workbook will be provided to explain the historical setting and to suggest some themes. The content has been developed by Anthony Robinson, a pastor, lecturer, and member of the UCC Writer’s Group.

Bio: Charnley graduated from Smith College with a major in religion. She has been active in the United Church of Christ all of her life. Charnley is married to Dr. Ron Patterson, so she will have a handy resource for tough questions!

The Book of Acts Part 1: A God Is Still Speaking Bible StudyCharnley Marsden

Description: Using eight Bible passages selected from both the Hebrew and Christian Scriptures (also known as the Old and New Testaments), we will explore seven different Bible study methods—one each session—in order to seek God’s leading and respond to it. For our eighth and final class, we will employ the study method the majority liked the best. No advanced preparation will be required. New Revised Standard Version Bibles provided.

Dates: Tuesdays (Jan. 8 – Feb. 26) - 1:30 – 3:00 p.m. Same course offered again on Wednesdays (Mar. 6 – Apr. 24) - 10:00 – 11:30 a.m.

Description: In preparation for the February 8–10 visit by Dr. Marcus Borg, join Dr. Patterson for a study of Borg’s book Reading the Bible Again for the First Time: Taking the Bible Seriously but Not Literally.

This book is a must read for the growing numbers of Christians both inside and outside the organized church who are unwilling to abandon the modern world of science and critical thinking in order to believe, and are searching for an enlightened, modern way to understand their faith and the Bible.

Dates: Wednesdays (Jan. 9 – Feb. 6) - 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. OR Thursdays (Jan. 10 – Feb. 7) - 2:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Reading the Bible Again for the First TimeRev. Dr. Ronald Patterson, Senior Minister

Description: His Holiness the Dalai Lama, a beloved world religious leader, outlines in this stirring work an approach to ethics that gives full respect to religion, and yet, crucially, one that does not depend on religion. The Dalai Lama’s compelling case for ethical mindfulness in everyday life and compassion as the foundation of well-being will be core to our discussions, along with other key inner values that promote spiritual fulfillment and a global world community based on understanding and mutual respect.

Description: This audio/video lecture series explores faith texts as interpreted by master composers and choreographers. The works include the “Bach St. Matthew Passion”, the “Faure Requiem”, the “Stravinsky Symphony of Psalms”, the “Mozart Requiem”, and for a change of pace, negro spirituals. Selections will focus on how the musicians and choreographers enhance the texts and spiritual messages.

Bio: Stephen has been a featured speaker on interfaith, music and dance topics for the Naples Philharmonic Center for the Arts Lifelong Learning Series, New York’s Chautauqua Institution, Road Scholar (Elder Hostel) programs, and other venues.

Description: An exploration of the common issues we all face at the end of life led by three subject matter experts. Participants are encouraged to attend all sessions, but welcome to attend just one or two.

Common End of Life IssuesSpeaker Series

Description: Father Richard Rohr, a Franciscan priest and internationally known speaker & author, shares his own aging process in ways that can awaken us, as we grow older, to what he calls the “further journey” into the mystery and beauty of healthy spiritual maturity. Guided by Father Rohr, our discussions will offer ways of thinking about the heartbreaks, disappointments, and first loves of life as stepping stones to the spiritual joys that the second half of life has in store for us.

Description: Paul writes one of his most endearing yet challenging letters from a prison cell facing execution. He engages the church leaders to have joy in the midst of suffering. We will explore keys to a more joyous Christian life – even in the midst of conflict, strife, and illness – as we study the book of Philippians.

Description: This session explores nutrition claims from news headlines and other popular sources. Do fats make you fat? What’s all the fuss about high fructose corn syrup? Can we just drink milk for our vitamin D intake? Are you tired of the “fishy burps” from fish oil, and, if so what should you do?

Bio: Susan earned her Doctorate in Optometry at Nova Southeastern University. She is a Certified Nutrition Specialist and is enrolled in the American Clinical Board of Nutrition Diplomat program, where she serves as ACBN liaison for all Optometrists. Dr. Summerton teaches nutrition at Hodges University as an adjunct professor.

Description: Rev. Dr. Kathleen Kircher and Dr. Dana Vannoy will share highlights of their recent trip to India with a digital image program and commentary on the people, places, history, religions and challenges of India. Locations include Delhi, Jaipur, Ranthambore National Park (safari), Agra, Khajuraho, and Varanasi.

Life and Treasures in the Heart of IndiaRev. Dr. Kathleen Kircher and Dr. Dana Vannoy

Description: Nothing ever remains the same in the wind, in a stream, or in life. Adjustment and growth are a part of the human experience. Writing helps to clarify and objectify what is happening and making thoughts and feelings (for only the writer to read) gives an advantage for the writer. It makes the invisible visible! It enables a person to know the self and thus opens the way for understanding another. This workshop focuses on changes in a person’s life that affect the natural maturing process.

Bio: George is a Certified Poetry Therapist and Presbyterian Minister who served in the same parish for thirty-eight years. He was the only minister among of the group of counselors who founded the National Association for Poetry Therapy.

Description: While we encounter research reports and statistics on a daily basis, it is often unclear what they really mean. This class will explore the research process, review critiques of research studies, and give you a practical framework to be a critical consumer of research.

Bio: Susan is the Assistant Director of Libraries and Associate Professor at Hodges University in Naples, FL, where she teaches research methods to graduate students. She holds a Masters in Library and Information Studies and a Ph.D. in Public Administration.

Behind the Headlines: Understanding the Research that Makes the NewsDr. Susan Smith, Associate Professor – Hodges University

Single Sessions ~ March

Description: Memory loss affects not only the forgetful but also those who care about them. Dr. Beckwith will describe the changes in progressive memory loss from the caregiver’s view. Learn the stages of decline as well as approaches to managing memory loss and dementia for those who manage memory for two. Dr. Beckwith will also describe issues in self care for caregivers.

Bio: Dr. Beckwith and his wife Pamela founded the Life and Memory Center. He has published numerous papers on memory as well as completed over 3,000 individual memory evaluations. He is a weekly columnist for the Naples Daily News.

Bio:Marcus Borg is among the most widely known and influential voices in progressive Christianity. He is best known for his work as a fellow in the Jesus Seminar, his biblical scholarship, and as the author of more than twenty books. Borg is also professor emeritus in the philosophy department at Oregon State University, where he was the Hundere Chair in Religion until his retirement in 2007.

His most recent books are Evolution of the Word: The New Testament in the Order the Books Were Written (2012), Speaking Christian: Why Christian Words Have Lost Their Meaning and Power — And How They Can Be Restored (2011) and Putting Away Childish Things: A Tale of Modern Faith (2010).

Description:Living Grace Retreat with Rev. Martie McMane

Martie McMane will lead us in a retreat based on her book: Living Grace: Spirituality in the Everyday World. In her book, Martie uses the wisdom of Jesus, passages from the Bible, and compelling stories to offer twelve personal covenants that can lead to a more fulfilling and grace-filled life.

If you are a seeker desiring a closer relationship with God, if you are a fellow traveler yearning to have “the life abundant” of which Jesus speaks, if you just sometimes wish you knew how to make life more meaningful and relationships more fulfilling, this retreat will provide you with tools for the journey and offer you spiritual encouragement on the way.

Bio:Martie is the Senior Minister of First Congregational Church in Boulder, CO. She has been a workshop leader for seventeen years, and is returning to Naples UCC by popular demand.

Billy’s piano playing, his keyboard arrangements, and his saxophone solos will highlight concert. And of course, Dawn’s artistry will shine in her many vocal styles. Richard Bosworth: Critically acclaimed for his highly sensitive interpretations of solo, concerto, and chamber music, Richard brings to the concert stage a broad spectrum of musical tastes. He holds a Bachelor of Music in piano performance from Eastman School of Music, Rochester, New York, as well as a Masters and Doctor of Music in piano performance and literature from Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana.

Alden Gatt is currently based in NYC.Alden also graduated from the Eastman School of Music with a B.A. in piano. He performs as a soloist and collaborator and teaches students privately in Manhattan and at Poly Prep Country Day School. Aden is also the Music Director for NY Opera Exchange, the Youth Choir Director at the Unitarian Church of All Souls, and principal accompanist for the Empire City Men’s Chorus.

With integrity, passion, unparalleled showmanship and attention to every detail, the men of the Purdue Varsity Glee Club have proudly served as ambassadors of the university with honor and dignity for more than 115 years. Founded in 1893, this select ensemble has entertained on behalf of Purdue University for campus, community, state, national and international events, averaging between 50-60 appearances each year.

This dynamic musical troupe employs a versatile repertoire including gospel, vocal jazz, swing, contemporary hits, romantic ballads, classical choral selections, barbershop, folk melodies, patriotic standards, familiar opera choruses, country and novelty tunes, and utilizes small groups and outstanding soloists to further enhance each show.

Purdue University Men’s Glee Club

American composer Mark O’Connor explains that his popular Appalachia Waltz “examines more closely how different worlds meet in the string universe.” This short waltz serves as the centerpiece of a culturally rich program that brings together the different musical worlds of Beethoven, O’Connor, and Hungarian composer Ernst von Dohnanyi. Comprised of some of the leading members of the Naples Philharmonic Orchestra, the Ars Nova String Trio brings a dynamic program to Tuesdays at Twilight.

Vocalist Rebecca Richardson and pianist Robin Shuford Frank became friends and colleagues through their work with Opera Naples, and have finally teamed up to present a concert they have been dreaming up for quite some time, thanks to Becky Weese and Naples United Church of Christ. Their program is made up of personal favorites ranging from the works of classical composers such as Rachmaninoff, Poulenc, Mozart, and Verdi on to the contemporary classical composers of today. The evening will be an intimate look into the lives of two young artists and their journeys through the world of music. Each selection presented represents a special moment in their life/career, and they will share these anecdotes with you throughout the program, ensuring that you’ll be just as inspired as they are by the music presented.

Adam Levin, a Naxos Recording Artist, has been praised by renowned American guitarist, Eliot Fisk, as a “virtuoso guitarist and a true 21st century renaissance man with the élan, intelligence, charm, tenacity and conviction to change the world”. Mr. Levin has performed across the United States and Europe at renowned venues.

A native of Chicago’s North Shore, Adam holds BM and BA degrees from Northwestern University in Music Performance, Psychology, and Pre-Med. Under the tutelage of Eliot Fisk, Levin completed a MM at New England Conservatory in Boston.

All members of the Bergonzi Quartet are faculty members at the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami. The quartet tours the US yearly, regularly performs in Miami, Boston, New York City, Michigan, Wisconsin, Connecticut, and Colorado, and has been invited to perform in Singapore, Taiwan, and South Korea.
