Django Unchained / Dir. Quentin Tarantino, 2012

It takes only the first few minutes to dive into another world. Taratino’s. Whatever the quality, nowadays it’s still a rare asset to produce something with a genuine style. Django Unchained is a strange mix, overall a fairly good movie, but unbalanced. You’ll get quickly very entertained, blood and guns, but then will sigh towards the never ending ending. You’ll get classic talenteddirecting skills, but then will be pulled out of the movie by clumsy aesthetics choices (clumsy crash zoom, (very) clumsy cameo...). You’ll get clever references and great script thrills, then many anachronisms, “bling-bling-swag” songs, and moments only there to look cool. The humility level of the director is no longer a surprise for that matter (hunted the best stars for the roles until schedules were working, wanted Lady Gaga to play Di Caprio’s wife ...), but when you go see Django Unchained, you know what you’ll get. All of this. The charm of a Tarantino movie.

How can animation be so free and smooth ? This one is almost another genre. The video is made with approximatively 2000 silhouettes extracted from PVC plates using a computer-controlled cutter.

The artist Shugo Tokumaru is one of those versatile artist, using over 100 different music instruments, dealing with everything from writing to recording. His fresh style drew attention of big brands like Sony or Apple.

The directors, Polish animators duo Katarzyna Kijek and Przemyslaw Adamski, more and more known everywhere, like very much to put their hands on new challenges and visually awesome pieces. See for example Pezet x Jimek “Nie musze wracac”.

“Young Dreams, a portrait” / Dir. Kristoffer Borgli

This kind of little portrait films is not exactly a new thing. But it’s definitely one growing ! With so many people doing similar things, it gets trickier to stand out from the whole. The artist needs to get closer from the viewer before the viewer even wants to become a fan.

Kristoffer Borgli gives us a very warm and well made portrait of the Young Dreams band, the guys instantly feel like old friends of ours. The success lies in the hearty, cordial and accessible way the edit shows the members and their interaction. The (on purpose) nerdy effects eventually work well as the director is not a newbie. You can re-appreciate all of his good work if you click on his face !
